Harbor buoys and race markers can be difficult to see once the sun goes down and many boaters, myself included, have accidentally run into one while navigating through the harbor after dark. It was a problem I knew could be solved, and I sought a reliable and inexpensive way to make it easier for anyone driving a boat at night to spot a marker or buoy ahead. After some research, the solution that emerged involved installing small LED, solar -powered landscape lights to approximately 40 buoys throughout Newport Harbor. Though it was a relatively inexpensive fix, the project still needed funding and hands-on work to bring it to fruition. Rather than automatically asking the City of Newport Beach to take the lead, I thought of the Boy Scouts and the great work they have done in our community over the years. I approached you and soon you agreed to take on the project as you worked to become an Eagle Scout. I enjoyed working with you on creating the light fixture and on identifying all of the buoys in the harbor that needed lighting. You then earned/raised the money required to fund the project and once that was accomplished, you led the effort to install lights at about 40 locations. From start to finish, the project took approximately one year to complete. Now that all of the lights have been installed, thousands of boaters will benefit from your efforts for many years to come. As an elected official, I see the gains for Newport Beach as two -fold. The project enhanced boater safety in Newport Harbor and did so at no cost to the City of Newport Beach. It was a great, community-based effort. I commend you on your dedication to the project and the hours and effort you put into seeing it through to completion. You were a pleasure to work with and I respect and appreciate your commitment to serving others and your community. Sincerely, Marshall "Duffy" Duffield Mayor
