Drunken drivers ~
· ntot welcome
in Costa Mesa
Even strut-wise Costa Mesa police veterans were a little su~bytheresuJtsoflheirdcpuuneot's"tettbedrunken
driven bfl'lhe sttttU .. camp&icn OD New vear·s Eve.
N•tiooal Hiabway Traffic Safety officials estimate that
OD an av~ Diaht onty one of every 2,000 drunken driven
aietsca•t But New Year's Eve i1nou nofma1 niaht Ifs the
one niabt of the year everyone c.pectt more tipsy dnvers on
the roed. Thas year. ihey were not alone in Costa Mcsa.
Twenty officen and a helicopter were on duty Saturday night
and proved the nauonal statistjcs wrons. -
Twenty-nine revelers were caught in the drunken dnvcr
dragnet.
New Year's Day, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Gary Webster
told a Daily Pilot reponer. 'That's an incredible number of
arrests for an aacncy of our size in a single ni&ht. ••
He's riaht. The only law enforcement ascncy that came
close to COsta Mcsa·s arrest record was the California
Highway Patrol's Oranac Counfy unit. which caught 2S
dninken drivers on county freeways the same nigh\. 4
Lt. Webster thinks Costa Mesa bad fewer wrecks on New
Year's Eve because many drunken driven ended up ridrns in
the backs of police cars instead of drivina their own. Who can
arauc with has assessment? There were only two minor wrecks
in Costa Mesa on New Year·s Eve.
Therc·s no way around the fact that Costa Mesa's anti·
drunken dnvin& effort was a resounding success. That
blitzkriq against tipsy dnvers won•t win the Costa. Mesa
Police Department a populanty citation with some driven .
That's OK, they· re not in the popularity business.
However. their New Year's Eve arrest record will cam
Costa Mttsa pol ice officers some accolades in law enforcement
circlcsandamon'g the groups devoted to the eradication of the
deaths. inJuncs and costs of alcohol-related traffic wrecks.
The efforts and awarcne~ of the Costa Mesa Police
Dcpanmcnt on New Year's Eve arc good examples of a law
enforcement agency rcspondinJ to the growing public
.o awarcncss that drunken driving 1s unacceptable and should
not be tolerated.
We hope they keep up the emphasis and continue to
prove that drunken drivers are not welcome in Costa Mesa.
