You WfD rad thtl in no other paper, you wW not 1ee it on televi1ion nor hear it on the radio. My editon don't know about this, my publisher docan't; not even my wife is aware of it. This i1 the fint anniversary of The Fred Column. Yup, one year ago today, readers of this newspaper found they had something else up with which they had to put (I have learned the hard way that our readers arc sticklers on grammar). 'Though I am not easily pleased with the work I do, I think the column has been pretty good, overall. Some have been much better than 01hcrs. a few have been less than good, most have been no1 too darn bad. Jr nothing else, the column has lived up 10 ils original promise: To take you places you might otherwise not go and introduce you to people you might not otherwise meet. We went Christmas shopping at the swap meet in the Orange Coast College swap meet, Valentine's shopping at a sexy-things emporium in Fountain Valley. We played guinea pig for a "dream machine" at a convention of psychologists and talked to some very unusual people at an inventors' exhibit. We took you to an audition for the Orange County Crazies comedy troupe and to a brunch the Newport Marriott gave for the families of troops preparing for war in the Persian Gulf. Oh, yeah, we did some dumb things, too. Like trying to fry an egg on various patches of pavement during the heat wave last June and like reporting the defeat of Newport Beach Councilman Phil Sansone in the November elections. Obviously, he was elected mayor to make up for that. My favorite columns have been those involving people who have drawn a short traw in life, but.were dealing positively with their problems. • ~ Certainly the series on the support groups for the pouses of Alzheimer's patients fits into that category. So docs the story about the Irvine youngsters playing on the Little League Challenger teams for mentally or physically disabled youngsters. There have been cveral columns about kids and some of the neat and wise things they do and say. I think kids arc aboul 1he most importanl people !here arc. Same with teachers. I like to think I'd be biased in favor of teachers even 1( my wife wa n't one. We've covered happy things (1he Eileen Segalove exhibit at Laguna Art Museum) and sad things (the closing or, among many other small businesses, local institutions Halliday's and The Storekeeper). There has been a reasonable amount of intellectual stuff, such as conversations with historian-feminist Rianne Eisler, Kabuki expert Faubion Bowers, religious leader Dr. Peggy Bassett and everybody's favorite uncle, Walter Cronkite. More than anything else, The Fred Column has been about people -known and unknown, good and bad. You met a burned-out Chicago lawyer turned boat bum, a recovering alcoholic who actually discovered the meaning of life and a de-frocked doctor who tried to assassinate, politically. District Attorney Mike Capizzi. You also met a bunch of people who found the true holiday spirit by bringing Chri tmas to familie who othcrwi e would not have had one, and a guy who got him elf arrc led in our back yard very early one morning by at lea t 300 cop . Mc, I've met scad of good people: here at the paper. oul working on the col umn and in .ill kind of odd placC5. Many or them are kind enough to tell me they actually enjoy reading The Fred Column . That continue!) to urpri e me, but I tell them how much I enjoy doing 1t. And that I'll try to keep making 11 better in the year to come. Fr«I M•rtln's column runs Monday, Wedn"'sday and Saturday. So, let's tnl~ about SCIC education. ta ... Diii 'II d What would you do, for example, if the teen-age girlfriend of your teen-age son emerged from his room nt 7 a.m. some morning? "It was a total shock," aid Connie, a mother who has had this cxrrience. "I wasn't euctty aure what to do at all. never ima, tned that Johnny was sexually active.... I wonder what the girl's parents think?" Nobody likes the idea, but 10me parents decide finally that letting their kids do what comes naturally is the beat way not to traumatize them -or themsetves. After all, we're all sexual, aren't we? The really surprising thing is that lots of parents are confuw:d about whether this is appropriate or not . It 's not appropriate. Permissive sex does not mean sexual education. Parents should not approve of anything like th1 . This does not mean, however, that parents should ju t stand off at a distance reciting the slogan, "Just ay no!" Pa rents have a responsibility to know wh at their children know about sex -both the dangers and the joys. Parents have an equal responsibility to . ' , ~ : make 1ure oKh child knowl all about the moral and ethical beliefs tbat thok ~ holdl. The an..-r ii that you can t really control anyone cllc's sex life and that you may not even know much about it. But thia does not mean that we should allow our children to drift into mini-marri.-. Marriafe of any kind ii inappropriate for teen-aaen. Part o the parental responsibility is to set clear hmitll in this reaard. O K, so how do we do this? All along the way, the project can be made a whole lot simpler with just a few good books. Most parents find 1t embarrassing and uncomfortable to talk with their children about sex, beyond the mechanical procedures of reproduction. The right books will provide parents with information in th e right kind of language, which helps to case cmba rra mcnt on both sides. h 's never 100 late, even for Johnny. Kids may have more information than you think. But, some of their information may be wrong and It may be incomple&e. Go to a bookstore and look around in the hum1n aexuality department and buy what feels comfortable for you to pus on. Even 1f you think that your child never reads anything. it's likely she or he will make an exception in this case. Then take the time to sit down with your child when there is no outside distraction and go through the book together, chapter by chapter. This intimate and private time together is the perfect opportunity for parents to explain to their children the connection between love, sex; marriage and babies. Sharing the sweet "secrets" of life remains one of the greatest satisfaction of parenthood. Dr. Und• AJ1••I I• • l•mlly and m•rrl•~ coun1tlor with omctl In Coron• d~I M•r. ENSENADA While Dennis Conner sailed Stars and Stripes to the finish line of the «th annual Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race in record time, what shaped up as a fast race at the start turned out to be one of below average speed. A total of 376 of the 508 boats which started the race on Friday off the Balboa Peninsula finished by 11 a.m. Sunday, the deadline to cross the finish line in Bahia de Todos Santos outside Ensenada Harbor. By midnight Saturday, 150 boats remained at ca. There was only one mishap in the race, when shortly after one of the tarts, the bow of one boat rose up on the stern or another, but no one was hurt. While Conner, in his 60-foot catamaran, and the fleet of 70-raters cemed to benefit from going outside, that condition only held in the early hou rs of the race and the swiftest of the boats took advantage of it. For the smaller boats, the be t trategy turned out to be a cour e more on the rhumbline, a straight line marking the shortest route from Newport to Ensenada. The light night winds on Friday and early Saturday prevented any of the monohull from challenging records, but the first of the IOR Oeet came home quickly n the winds picked up about 10 a m. Saturday. Leading the way was Roy Disney, 1hc brother or Walt, and ~IS brand new Santa Cruz 70 P}cwackct, which cleared the line hortly after 11 a.m. Saturday. In some programs, the rates were even wone. During the 1980s, only 7 percent of San Jose State football recruits graduated. At Long Beach State, just S percent of basketball recruits got degrees while San Diego State graduated 6 percent of its baseball players, The San Mercury New reported. The survey also found that in some instances, 1.uch as at San Jose State, scholarships for athletes end soon after their eligibility to play expires, even if they need financial help to ~omplete their educa tion. .; Such practices came in for harsh criticism in the recently released Knight Foundation Commission report on problems in collegiate athletics. Overall , at the five CSU schools competing at the Division l level -San Jose State, Long Beach State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Cal State Fullerto n - only 9 percent of t~c basketball recruits got their degrees, 11 percent for baseball and 18 percent for football. "We're not pleased with those numbers, and they arc improving," said San Jo c Stale president Gail Fullerton, who last year cited the football team's low academic performance as one of the reasons for firing Claude Gilbert as coach. The median rate for all NCAA schools was 33 percent for ba~ketball, 50 percent for baseball and 3 percent fo r football.
