Director of development for the Costa Mesa Senior Citizens
Corporation, and be is helping oversee construction ol the new
20,()()().foot senior center on 19th and Pomona streets. The center
is scheduled to open in March 1992. A,.,,...
One of HOYSepian'1 aoaJs with the senior center ii to make
sure it bas an integral role in the lives of its memben, much like
a church. "Succeuful churches are successful because of one key
ingredient -that'• committed people. It's part of their livea.
That's the type of organization I'm trying to develop as
development director." There arc about 1,200 member1 in the
Costa Mesa Senior Citizens Corporation and Hovsepian said he'd
like to double that in the next rave years.
• Cll'MITMBIT--. ----------
It was a strong belief in philanthropic action that led
Hovsepian on the path, eventually landing him at the senior
center. He had worked in the buainess sector before dropping
everything about five years ago to volunteer with such groups u
the Performing Arts Center, SOS, Fairview Child Care Center
and the Chamber of Commerce. "With the aspirations and skills
that I feel I have been God-given, I felt I should be a
philanthropist," he said. He and his wife Cindy and their two
children now live in Laguna Hills.
MUSIC TO m fARl:-----------
A second-generation Armenian-American, Hovsepian grew up
in Pasadena in a close-knit family. "Armenian was spoken just as
much as English was," he rccalJcd. When be was about 5 years
old, Hovsepian said he fowad his &randfatber's maodoUD in a
closet. "I just took to that mandolin. Something about atrinp and
acoustics ts very dear to me." Hovsepian soon took up the oud, a
traditionaJ Armenian string instrument, refurbishing an old beat·
up instrument he bought from a f amity friend. "Then I started
playing seriously and about 13 or 14 years old started an
Armenian band, playing percussion." His musical talents on the
oud -he now has a "state of the art" oud -were revealed in
the community in earlier this month during a variety show benefit
for the Senior Center.

Alcal'"lll, Cll•Blbll:
drug war tal'llll
• )Villiam Bennett, the country's first drug czar, gave the job
a bad name by using it more as a platform for his demaaogic
bullying than as a source for effective drug poHcy. Whatever
else Bob Martinet manages to accomplish, he already hu
succeeded in bringing a quieter and more rc110nablc voice to
the office he inherited from Bennett.
The chain-smoking Bennett could give a stem-winding
lecture on the evils of cocaine or marijuana, but he remained
conspicuously silent on the subjects of alcohol and tobacco,
the two drugs that have caused grcalcr harm to more
Americans than all others combined. Martinez told
participants at a recent conference on state and local drug
policy he does not intend to perpetuate that double
standard.
''We can't duck this issue,'' Martine said . "for young
people. alcohol ~nd tobacco arc illegal su lances, so we will
be paying more al tent ion to these s."
National surveys show that m half of all high
school scnion have used alcohol 1 c past month a nd
almost 30 percent have smoked cigarettes during that time.
Meanwhile, only 14 percent report having smoked marijuana
and only a tiny fraction have used cocaine.
Perhaps alcohol and tobac.co wouldn't be so popular
among tccnagen today if the first drug czar had shown
anything like his usual vehemence in warning of their
dangers.
By honestly addressing the injurious effects of the abuse of
alcohol, tobacco and prescription drur:o, Martinez's office can
gain credibility for its l>r~der drua PQlicy. Young Americans,
who tend to know a hypocritical lcttvre~,..._one,
arc :\Ure to be more receptive to honest education than
manipulative propaganda. 1
Martinez has -yet to show that his position as chief of the
Office of National Drug Control Policy can ever become
much more than a glorified public relations job.
Those in the fronl lines or education, treatment and law
enforcement need more tangible support than Martinez,
Congress and the White House have managed to provide.
Still, the former Florida governor at least deserves credit
ror having begun to take the natjonal discussion or drug
abuse in a more constructive and less partisan direction than
Bcnnelt did.

Union leaders say what they
really want to do is break the two-

Union officials say the club is

the right, ran to the ball and
eventually got it on the green with
the crowd applauding. After his
e;1thibition hole, Whittaker and
family departed for Knott's Berry
Farm for the day, eluding the
balance of non-scnsicaJ golf.
Sportswriter Randy Youngman
became a designated runner for
our shot to the right edge of the
green and finished with a par-3.
Paul Salata, originator of
Irrelevant Week and general
chairman each year. then found a
wooden stake to hit his ahou all
the way to the green, then turned
the pointed end up and putted.
It was quite a demonstration
and one the gallery totally a.greed
with. The only thing missing were
the serious hecklers although a
few water balloons descended on
~everal players on the green u
they attempted to putt.
When players reached the ninth
hole during their round, they
fo und an entirely different
situation.
A group of seven hecklers wu
on hand, two at the tee and five at
the green. Girlie pictures were
surrounding the tee, wet shorts,
balloons filled with water and a
large Ccrveza plastic bottle replica
were used u props to hea.lc the
players. One of the t.joonics
mooned the players at either the
tee or the green in the carty p>ing
just as they were about to hit a
shot or putt.
At the green, water balloons
were prevalent and were thrown at
the pll)'en u they lined up a chip
or a putt. When they ran out of
balloons, plutic ftter cups were
used instead to throw water on the
contestanu. It wtt futer and moro
often than not, more 1CCUrate at
dolo range. Beer cam were placed
around the p in and other
distractions were placed in the
way. Tbe seven hec:kJen teemed

Bernardy and co-<:bairman
Youngman, sports columnist of the
Orange County Register who
dreamed up the idea of 1bot clock
golf, were happy with the turnout.
"We had at least 100 players
today and turned away more than
30. We're real happy and feel we
have helped the S.O.S. group
today," Bernardy said.
Steve Lane, owner of the
executive counc near the John

the situation despite having the

use of the year.
"I think this ii fabuloua.'' be
said. "It's a great thing for the

"We're more than haP.P.Y to let

Ironically, the Newport Beach

that Paul Salata started Irrelevant

second year for the Runnin'-
