Total knee rep .. cement.
Total knee replace~nt i~
a prooedure where worn-out
ar11culatlng surfaces of the
knee are worn out by dlsabl-
lng degenerative arthltls. This
Is similar to the wear and tear
on a pair of tires where the
tre d 1s comptetely worn out.
Initial treatment of this
problem Is conservative with
the use of antj-lnflammatory
and pain medications such
as Naprosyn and Motrln.
However. when , symptoms
persist and patients have the
problems of loss of range of
motion. mab1hty to walk,
severe constant pain with
any movement and Inability
to sleep at night because of
pain. total knee replacement
Is considered tor treatment.
Patients are hospitalized
about one week after the
twO-hour surgery which re-
surtaces the knee joint. The
worn-Qut surfaces are
wh ich ahve been available for
tbe last five years.
Following surgery, patients
begin rehabilitation lmmedl·
ately. They are placed on a
continuous paaslve motion
machine. which exercises the
knee mechanically. Early
movement of the knee results
in less pain and Improved
flexibl11ty of the knee. Pa·
tJents receive physical treat-
ment at home for about a
month.
Post-operatively, patients
are very grateful. Prior to
surgery. patients are very llm·
lted In their activity; however.
post-operatively, patients
usually can resume normal
walking and~ be able to
play gotf in certain caes. For
