When it comes to poveny, homelessness and hunger
most of us talk a aood pme. '
It's easy to decry th~ state of the world and sympathize
with those who our SOClety has bypassed It is much more
d1fficuh to put one's self wbCTC one's mouth is.
Merle Hatleberg is one of those rare people who have
the grace ~nd courage to go beyond words. giving of her own
life and ume to improve the lot of the needy. You might
remember Hatleberg as the impetus behind the Someone
Cares program and manager of the TLC senior meals
program at Rea Communny Center. In 1986 she noticed that
some of those who came into the center to pick up the free
canned goods they had available were too hungry to even
take the foodstuffs somewhere to be cooked. She started
preparing a pot of soup to share W1th those who needed
quick rehef. She bc&an by feeding about 30 souls. Today. her
program regularly reeds more than 200. Her goal IS to feed
every hungry person in Orange County.
We were dismayed to learn that Hatlebcrg has been
diagnosed with cancer and is facing surgery, chemotherapy
and a recuperation penod away from her meals program.
Rev. Bob Ewing, pastor of the South Coast Chnstian
Church, which provides space for the soup kitchen, says
Hatlebera b approachtnf her problems with a posillve
altitude. We're not surpnscd.
But. he also says she would feel even better if those who
can would support her with prayers and her program with
donauons. The Thanksgiving holiday approaches and the
financial need 1s always greater dunng the holidays.
We can't imagine a better place to invest both prayers
and money.
And. for the sake of our community and ats need~. we
wish Merle Hatleberg a speedy recovery.
