Let us sa) up front that we support the P1ers1de Village plan as present!) drawn. We think an attracJ1ve grouping of three restaurant buildings wnh some beach-onented shops. on land lcasl·d from the Cit). would be a vast improvement over the present asphalt parking lot. We also no te that the 3.5-acre projec t would not encompass any area that 1s current!> open beac h. a common misconception. And finall y. the Pierside Village would give the d owntown redevelopment the cntical mass needed to be succcssf ul. However. we also think that the people have spoken and what the) 've said 1s that the> arc going to have a yes-or-no say 1n an) project mvol\'mg the sale or lease of city-owned recreational la nd. Here's where 11 gets slick). Depending upon with whom }OU speak. a lease has already been signed on the parking lot upon "h1ch the proposed P1erside Village would be built. ~o therefore. the logic goes. Measure C would no t appl). since an existing lease 1s alread) in place. Other~ sa) with no approved project. how could a 'ahd lease be in place'! A coun ma' have to decide this issue. . '\nothcr strateg) P1crs1de 'village backers are taking is this: the proJeCt 1s proposed for an asphalt parking lot and not on the beach sand. which "ould be prohibited under M easure C. This 1s another legal loophole. The fact is that nearly 74 percent of Hunungton Beach voters -38.566 residents -'oted for Measure C which '-"3S drafted large I> to halt the Piers1de V 1llage project. Not even the de\'elopcr-inspircd countcrmeasure Measure D. whic h was slipped onto the ballot in a little-publtc11cd and rare emergency da}t1me council meeting. was able to confuse or sway the voters from dell\enng their mandate. The controversial project. with all Its lawsuits and special electio n poss1biht1es, 1s now headed for a Cu y Council dcc1s1on on Nov. 19. We urge that the dec1s1on be postponl'd until after the new city council member<; take their scats on Dec.
