Tiiis trip was not
Niiiy illCllllPY
Clw1es Osterluod•s last full meetin~ as a member of the
Ocean View School District board was last Tuesday night
At its next mcetina. the bolrd•s first order of business will
be to scat the winnen from the Nov. 6 election and
Osterlund wu not among them. He came in fifth in a race
for three available seats and thus his tenure on the board will
officially end at that time.
Nevertheless, Osterlund is currently in San Dieao at
taxpayer expense for a statewide conference of school board
memben that bcpn Wednesday and runs throuah this
week.end. Osterlund's conference registration. hotel, meals
and transportation will cost the district $600 to· $800, ..
officials said this week. It is money that the financially-
strapped district cannot afford to spend for nothing.
When other board members raised questions about the
propriety of Osterlund making the trip. he countered that he
tntends to stay involved in the district and the conference
will help him continue to make contributions. Perhaps so.
but he'll be involved as a private citizen, not as an officer
of the district. and so be should pay his own way to the
conference, like any other private citizen.
Osterlund's other response to suggestions that the
district's tupayen would not be getting their money's worth
out of the expenditure was, .. They've been getUng their
money's worth for a Ion& time." _
The taxpayers who voted Nov. 6 apparently thought
otherwise. We think Osterlund should show a little respect
for those taxpayers and for the district be claims be wants
to help and not stick them with a needless expenditure in
a time of declining enrollment and mounting financial
pressures.
