Newport Beach/Costa M-Dally Piiot Monday, January 6, 1992 A3 ~;~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ii)
...
The ol' loot-In-mouth
disease strikes auatn
, Here we arc, only six days into 1992 and I am about to break one
of my New Year's resolutions.
Resolution No. 17, to be prrcise: Not to write anything more
about the UCLA-USC rivalry until next November. Out I believe
an exception can be made for this particular item.
Loyal readers will recall that, for the day of
the game, I wrote a gentle column discussing,
among other things, the egregious nature of a
certain musical theme the USC band played to
the point of delirium.
Mistakenly, I referred to the noxious notes of
this crummy cantata as "Twits of Troy." 1 was
not sure of the title, but I knew it was SStmctbing
H~c that. I wantca to check that, and find out
· ~-.. who wrote it -and why.
~ 1 So I tried to call an old friend, Trojan alumnus 1111.111 l Ron Broadwell. Outing his checkered carce'r,
------•·Ron served a stretch of several years as director On th~ -of the Trojan band.
C 1 called several times, but received no answer, .. _.o.a.s.t.· •' •' not even from his answe ring machine. Usually at
that time or the year, the machine greets you
with the first few bars of the wcll-knowQ Trojan anthem, "Fight
On." So I wrote the column without Ron's input and life went on.
My wife (also a USC grad) and I and Ron and his wife Ann
(yet another Trojan) have celebrated New Year's Eve together for
more years than any of us cares tp remember. We have a wonder·
ful time, proving that Trojans and a lone Bruin can co-exist.
When the Broadwells arrived at our house, we socialized a bit,
then I said: "Hey, Ron, you might get a kick out of this piece I
wrote," and I went and dug it out of this card board box where my
columns are carefully archived.
You should know that Ron has red hair and the fair complexion
to match it. l watched him as he read, his face turning the color
of. a fine carrot. Hmmm, I thoueht, he's not smiling. Actually, he
did ge t a few good yocks out of 11. but, overall, his expression was,
shall we say, grim.
"So what do you know about that tune?" I asked. "Did you
have to play it when you were director of the band?"
"No .. .I did not have to play it..." Ron replied, rather stiffly, I
thought. "I wanted to play it. .. Because I wrote it, Fred .. .t wanted
to play it because I 'ot an ASCAP royalty payment every tim.e it
was pl~01WClC-lfis10n Fred ... And l still do." · - - -
Whoops. ~
"And by the way, Fred," he added even more stimy; "It is' not
called 'Twits of Troy,' it is called ~ribute to Troy.' l still ger a
royalty eac}l time it is played on network televis ion and 1 do not
appreciate it when people ... newspaper columnists especially -
compl-ain about this noble piece of music."
Double whoops.
"Heh, heh,'' I chuckled falsely. "Just kiqding, Ron."
"Yeah, well, I will admit, it could be considered rather boring.
Tedious, even, when played ov.er and ovcf. again. But to-someone
"ho is gelling paid each time it goes out over the airwaves, it is
not the least bit boring. It is wonderful!"
A few years back, Ron made ne arly Sl 7,000 off the dreary
dirge. But_ he admilled th:u the royalty tributes have ebbed SC· •
vcrcly along with the Trojans' won-lost balance sheet.
"I wrote the th ing in about 15 minutes to fill-in during televi-
sion commercial bre:u:s." Ron explained. "After 1 left USC, l
completely forgot about it. Then, all or a sudden, I started getting
royalty _eay_!llerits. Art fiartneL_(curr_ent USC band director, whom
Ron has never met) found it in a trunk somewhere and startea
playing it every time SC made a first down or scored. It was music
to my car~!"' • •
Not "anting to hurt a friend, I· promised Ron I would never
again criticize his {Tlalodorous melody. In fact, I mad~ it a New
Year's reso lut ion.

Entrepreneur
Who• JoAn S. Ashley, a 49-ycar·old Costa Mesa resident and 28-ycar
• veteran of the accounting business who' is owner of JSA En-
terprises.
What• JSA Enterprises produces and markets a line of tire repair
• kits. The company's first product was the Tidy Tire Kit, which
comes in a plastic case and includes a product that seals and inflates punctured
tires. The case also contains a screwdriver, pliers, an apron·, gloves, a trash bag,
a flashlight and towelcues. Later this year, JSA will introduce its second prod-
uct, the Tidy Tire Pouch, which will come in a nylon pouch and include many
of the same contents, as well as a safety flare. The Tidy Tire Kit retails for
$27.95, and the Tidy Tire Pouch will retail for $24.95.
When• Ashley, who for the last seven years has also run Ashley
• Consulting Services, her own accounting and bookkeeping-~
practice, got the idea for tler tire repair kits in March 1990 and introduced her
first product six months later.
Where• JSA Enterprises i~ headquartered at 760 E. 19th Street in
• Costa Mesa. The company's manufacturing operations arc
based at the same location, although Ashley contracts out for some of JSA's
production. JSA's products are sold throughout the United States and in Can·
ada and Saudi Arabia. Ashley hopes to gain Cf)try into several other inter·
national markets. Internationally, the Tidy Tire Kit is sold primarily on ·a retail
basis, but in the U.S., it's sold mostly through the premium incentive market.,
such as businesses that give employee safety awards and financial institutions
that give prospective customers an incentive to open acco.un ts.
Wh • Ashley says that after being stranded twice with flat tires, she V • decided there must be a market for a clean, safe and easy way to
fix a punriured tire. She combined her idea for a needed product with her en··
treptcneurial spirit to form JSA Enterprises. "J like the rewards (of owning a.
business), and I don't just mean monetary rewards," she says. "It's the satisfac·
tion of knowing if the company did something good, it's because of your ef-
forts." ..
H • JSA sold only about $5,000 worth of its tire kits during 1991, its OW• first full year in business, but because of response from the pre·
mium inc~ntivc market, Ashley projects 1992 sales of $75,000 to $100,000. She
says she will continue to focus on her niche in the incentive market for at least

· ,_The Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
M uch _has been written commemorating the 200th
anniversary of the Dill of Rights.-that.crucial attachment
ll to the Constitution which rcaffirmed·the preeminence of
the rights of the people against the government. Most attention
has been focused on the First and Sctpnd Amendments, primarily
clue to the continual swirl of controversy around free speech, the
right to bear arms and separation of church and state.
" Usually overlooked in most discussions of the Dill of Rights is
one of the most critical amendments: Th~ Tenth. Indeed, the
Tenth could , .. ell be termed th e Forgoucn Amendment. Many
Constitutional scholars of permissive legal bent go so far as to
pronounce it a dead letter. ..
This is tragic, for the .Tenth Amendment is one of the purest
distillations of the rounding FaJhcrs' firm belief that the powers
of the federal government must be strictly and explicitly limited.
They understood that liberry is maximized and governmental
power most effectively restrained by keeping government ns local

PROPER COOLANT
REPLACEMENT
There Is more to replacing a car's
coolant than removing the lower
radiator hose and allowing as much
antifreeze to flow out as possible.
This amateur ettort will leave ~
·much as half of the old coolant In
the engine, hoses, and heater. A
more comprehensive approach
involves the removal of all the old
doolant, rust particles, acids, and
other contaminants by backflushlng.
This means forcing fresh water
through the system In the d11ection
that runs counter to the normal
coolant flow. While per1ormlng this
task (every two years), the auto
technician can permanently Install a
flushing tee In the heater inlet hose,
inspect the radiator, and check the
hoses. This maintenance chore Is
too Important to be relegated to Jhe
car owner's driveway.
If you are traveling to w1ntefY
climes. please be aure that your
radiator 1• ·~dequately flushed and
filled with the right coolant. Her• at

Sailors cruise to tourney titl
El Modena proves
to be no match
in finale, 50-34
By Dennis Brosterhous
SpolU WrfW
GARDEN GROVE -The
start of the fourth quarter of Sa1-
ucday .Jtiaht's.. championship game.
of the Santiago Tournament typi-
fied the strengths of this season's
Newport Harbor High girls basket-
ball team.
The Sailors forced turnovers on
El Modena's Jirsl four offensive
possessions of the periods, con-·
verting the initial three into bas·
kets, to help salt away a 50-34 vic-
tory over the Vanguards.
Kala Ross, who was later to be
nnmcd Most Valuable Player of
the tournament, stole th~ in-
bounds pass to s1art the quarter
and scored on a layup 10 ignite an
8-0 run to start the period. The
play expanded Newport's lead
from 13 to 1 1,
Another basket by Ross, who
led all scorers with 22 points, and
two more by Maureen McLaren
gave Newport (7-4) breathing
room. The Sailors forced no Jess
than a dozen El Modena turnovers
in the fourth quarter.
"I was pleased with our de-
f ensivc effort," s:iid Newport
Coach Shannon Jakosky. "It's
something we work hard on. We
' ~re able to wear them down with
our dcfel)seiOilighl:" ---.
It was tight in the early going
with the Sailors falling behind 9-6
in the ti"rst five minutes. However,
with the score deadlocked at 11, a
baseline jumper by Genevieve
Evarts gave Newport a lead it
would hold the rest of the way.
Evarts, along with McLaren, were
named to the all-tournament team.··
McLaren shook off a slow start
in which she went 2 for 6 from the
field in the first three quarters; to
make 4 of 5 in the final period to
finish with 13 points.
"I think Mo was a little bit ner-
vous tonight," said Jakosky. "But
she kept. working very hard. And
she djd an excellent job on t'te
boards ... ~McLarctf1laa five re-
bounds in the first quarter alone
and finished with fO overall.
From an 18-15 ed~e with one
minute to go in the fll st hair, the
Sailors scored the final five points
o( the second quarter two short
jumpers by Ross sandwiched
around a free throw by Kristi Jzu-
mita to stretch it out to 23-15 at
the break.
· "Kala is a little bit more of an
offensive player, but her defense
and rebounding have been improv-
ing," said Jakosky.

could "play with" Brea, and that it
would give him the gauge he need·

the oncoming Pacific 'Coast

in the way of stiff competition for
his Mustangs.
And "play with" Brea the Mus·

The Ladycats, with three sopho·

though Costa Mesa took no back,

Weeks felt this was the year

DUNN: Barajas was ripped on
From 81
At this point, Barajas has been
ripped off. I can only hope proper
rationalization follows. Stay tuned. . 0
And he came out ;an 8·4 winner for fifth place, one of three Estancia wrestlers to medal at the annual showdown of wrestling powers.
OK, so Estancia and Costa
Mesa didn't fair so well in
Saturday's Es1ancia 40-way, one of
the most distinguished wrestling
tournaments in the Southern
Section. But Canyon's Matt
Padgett certainly opened some
a ked aboutlthc large ta1100 on his

EAGLES: Estancia rolls, 88-37
From 8 1
The Eastes netted 27 of 47 from
the field (57.4 rercent) as opposed
to Drc3's 12 o 48 (25 percent) as
the l.illcr simply could not deal
with the E:ig lcs' defense from the
s1:m.
·1 he only thing thnt could really
be surmised Saturday night was
that the Engles had not lost any of
the edge they have obtaintd. Drea·
Olinda, despite playing on its own
home court, played like visitors
against the smoolh·functionina Ea·
gles, led by point sunrd Joe
Edson.
Edson, who entered with a S.O
scorina average, was held scoreless
for the second 1ime this season,
bu1 there seems liule concerf\ in
that department considering where
the Eagles' beef is -up rron1.
"We've been aoing somewhat by
commiuce at 1he point," noted
O'Brien. "But I can live with him
(Edson), because he pla)'S so hard.
Brea·Olinda hod a bnef spark in
the play of guord Scott Hole, who
dropped in three buckets in the
first quarter -which led to the
in ertion of supcMub Ru~ll
King. who apphed a defen ivc net
around 1he Wildcat starter for
much of the balance or the game,
keeping him out or double fiaures.

gracefully. Since the re are no dance studios oJferina lessons tn
this sedate waltz, new members must wing it. But the rules are
fairly rigid . Lifting one's face -or hemlines -is a definite
mis-step. You make do with the face, body and hair Ood pve
you. Although blue treuea are OK·, Platinum Bombsbell ii out.
Pink lipstick is tolerable, but silver ey• shadow is taboo.
Occasionally a misguided matron cuts loose and buys a bikini
and she's asked to resign as President of the Gladlola Society.
F or every person who accepts-age with a wrinkled stiff upper tip. there are scads of cheaters who fight time with rucb
and unts, toupees and creams, ast rology charts, and slant
boards. They'll try any youth restorer -including a
May-December marriage. That's the toughest tonic. It's far
easier taking a swig of geritol than throwing out your back
every night dancing the Lambada.
Those bored with the convcl'\tional ways of aging, can always
resori to being a character. T,hey have more fun than anyone.
Scorning traditional garb, lady chatacters toddle around in
peasant blouses, dirndl skirts, sandals, wrap-around braids, and
more turquoise jewelry than a Navajo trading post. This
artsy-craftsy group of free souls regard aging as too bourgeois
to be llroubling.
The most exclusive society are people who
. never-seem-to-age-because-they-inherited-rhe-right-gencs., It's
: hard for me to be nice to these age1ess wonders. While 1 shrivel each
year, they keep on blooming. That's no way to trent a ftiend.
