Finally, they found a third contractor who
cleaned up the messes of his predecessors and
got the house fini shed to the poinr where the
owners could move in last month. Though the
third contractor performed superbly for them,
. the couple apparently felt more comfortable
paying the subs and vendors themselves.
When it came time to pay one major sub-contractor, the check
was written by Mr. Homebuilder and the guy came by to pick it
up. Later, Mrs. Homebuilder received a call from their bank.
The sub-contractor had come in to cash the check, but the btlnk
couldn't honor it, the caller said. There was plenty of money in
the account, but the signature didn't match.
Could Mrs. Homebuilder write a new check and could the sub
come by and pick ii up? The bank would stop payment on the
original check. No charge, of course; happy to be of service.
By now, Mrs. H was so weary, so bent up, she agreed. The sub
came by, apologized for the trouble "the bank" had caused, and
drove off with check number l\\O.
And that was that. Until their bunk statement arrived last week.

Newpo rt Harbor (1 -0, 9~4),
which still wins with its dcfease,
has McLaren (6-foot·l) back ~w,
forming an impressive one·two
punch with Junior forward
Michaela Ross, an AJl-CIF choice
last year. ·
McLaren was double-and
triple-teamed by CdM's zealous
defense most of the way in this
one, but Ross and the remaining
cast had no trouble pouring it in.
Ross had 16 points, four re-
bounds, three assists, two steals
and two blocks while Gina Heads
(12 points) and Mclaren (JO) a1so
scored in double figures.
CdM (0-1, 5-10) was led by j~n
jor poin' g_uard Mollie Flint, who
cored a game-high 21 point&, in-
cluding an ·11 of 13 effort from •be
free throw line.
"We're still a young tel\m and
o ur turnovers renect that," CdM
Coach Garth Flint said. "This is
the best game we've played. Our
game plan was to shut down
McLaren and hold Ross to her av-
erage (17.1 ppg). Our defense did
extremely well tonight."
