Volunteers help

By Jon Ferguson
Stall Wnllf
I magine for a second that you
Ciln't read a simple sentence.
Perhaps, it describes the
dosage on a medicine bottle, how
to cook tonight's dinntr or catch
a bus at the proper time.
These are processes most of us
take for granted. But they arc
practices mQny people in our
communities don't.
One' group of local volunteers
appreciates its basic talent

The Costa Mesa Literacy
Center survives due to the efforls
Qf people such as Margery Fuller
-who helped form the
organization over 20 years ago
with Edith Youmans and her
husband, Grant -Ruth Wil>on
and a variety of people from
cvery·facet of the community.'
"I think it's ve.rt sad whm_
people can't read for the
practical side as. well as the
aesthetic si de," Wilson said. "It 's
really pathetic, the isolation ...
adults have when they can't re11d.
They're isolated culturally and
eco(\omically ...
Fuller and Wilson are deeply
involved with organizing and
teaching three community
literacy centers in addition to
educating new tutors twi ce a
week. The tutors give a few
hours each Monday night.
"Most of th e tutors, I find, arc
people who love to read, have a
great appreciation of the
language and Silnpjy want to
harc-thtlt ~' ith others," Wi lson
said. · •
Tutor Durt Lewis recalls,
"When I wa~ young, I had'an
inferiority complex. I got in
college and sort of w,avered, but
l studied philosophy and read my
way out of my complex. A~ that
time, I knew the value of
literacy. l knew if I couldn't
read, I'd still be in the dark
corner.''

f rickle down day
af the auto show
T he cars were wonderful. Even most of the salesmen were
pleasant and knowledgeable. But the place was tacky.
What we're talking about here is what is grandly called
the 1992 Orange County International Auto Sho'ol(. Ads tell you
the Orange County show is being held in the Anaheim Stadium
''exhibit buildings." That's not quite qccurate.
The 1992 Orange County International Auto
Show is being held (through Feb. 23) in the _
Anaheim Staa1um exhlbTt tents. On opening day
Saturday i .. was raining. And those exhibit
"buildings" were leaking. The Oldsmobile guys
had managed to park a $25,000 convertible -
top down, of course -smack under a major
dribble. fred If you needed to make a pit stop, you went
.._,.._ outside and stood in line, in the rain, waiting for
,,._ Ull your turn in one of the eight trailer-mounted
----.---portable latrines. They were proudly labeled, On the "Another Andy Gump VIP Unit." Coast 1 will give the car-show organizers this much:
These were surely the fines t portable outhouses I
------have ever seen or used.
You can pay your $5 to park and your SS to
get io, but there's not much you'll sec at the auto show that you
can't sec cruising Harbo~ Blvd., with brief treks to the import
stores on Baker, J3'0lborcc and Coast Highway.
What you do get for your ten bucks is freedom from salesmen.
At the show you can ogle and listen to doors thunk shut all you
like want without having to fend off the inevi table "So what'll it
take to get you in this baby today?" pitch:
You can even make money on the deal. A nice Subaru lady
gave me a card good for $20 if I'll test-drive their'slinky new SVX
spony car. h's tempting, but I probably won't. When I merely
test-sat the SVX we ~came instant soulmatcs and I shudder 10
think what would happen if I actually drove one. .
The import vs. American-made conflict was a recurring topic in
COn\'crsations with fellow tire-kickers. Another gent and I were
sitting inside the soon-to-come Nissa n Quest minivan.
"This is really nice,'' he said. "I think I like it best of all the
minivans. but r don't really want. to buy an import as Jong as
there's something Ame rican-made that's just as good." ·
I told hun. ... hls conscience could be clear.. Lh:it the-tfo.~nn...QuesL
was being made in America by Lincoln -Mercury and would be on
the market this summer -:ls :i t,,;n to the Mercury Villager.
The whole Yank-import thins. can ge t \.ety confusing. Mercury
Tracers and some sibl"ing Ford Escorts are made in Me xico -
from Mazda running gear. Nissan Sentras arc made in Tennessee,
Toyota Camrys in Kentucky, Corollas in California and 1 londa
Actord'> and Civics in Ohio.
Then there arc the.new ''LH"ltcric~ cars coming in rhc fall from
ChC}~lcr. These fam ily sedans that arc being counted on to sa'e
Chr)'sler's buns are already being ha\\ kcd on TV by the noted
import-basher, Lee lacocca.

Should the Costa Mesa Fnrm School
be spared from the Newport·Mcsa Uni-

Save the farm
I absolutely totnlly fe el that this farm
should be kept intac1 because I think
the children need something they can be
dedicated 10. 1 think it helps them with
gelling on with life. They learn so many
things over there.
My son was in it since 9th grade, and
he was not 3 jock, he was not a -musi-
cian, and he learned so much mechanics,
• and growing things and he ·is now in the
landscaping business.
I feel we need this little pocket of qui-
etness or something in 1hc city and I am
really hopeful 'thnl they keep it up. lt
keeps 1hem busy and out of trouble and
maybe out of jail in the fu ture.

her young age when she first ap·

"My age was more of an issue

putting the value of the church to
the test.
"Difficulty bring· people to·

thing to be together in good times,
but it's also important to plan for
rainy days. Now that we're in
those ratny days, it's time to tap

Costa Mesa
youth still
being ignored
To the Sports Editor:
E arly la~t year, lour paper
wrote a series o six articles
on the deplorable condition
o ( the youth athletic facilities in
Costa Mesa.
Addi tionally, you took the time
to strongly editorialize on the sub·
ject, taking the obvious position
-that-the current fuciHties-:Ire""tnad·
equate and unsafe.
Additionally, it hai. been almost,
16 months since the Costa Mesa
Youth Athletic Committee made
our first presentation before city
council. It has been over three
years since our group, CMY AC,
was formed and began trying to _
work with the city.
What's been accomplished since
our presentation to the council?
Since your series of articles? The
same thing that has been done
over the last 20 years in this ci ty.
NOTHING!!
The city has c9mm issioned a
master plan of the city's parks be·
cause of our and your efforts.
Where is this plan? While on the
one hand the ci ry says there is no
money for a youth sports facility
the other hand is setting aside up
to $152,000 for medians on Vic tO·
rla Street.
They raise the i olf course fees
for the purpose of raising money
to put down new golf cart paths.
Bu t what has been done for the
kids? NOTHING!!
l have spoken on this issue be,
fore the council on a pumbe r of
different occasions, a presentation
was made to the school board on
the issue. In one day CMYAC col·
lected over '250.-lettcir. iA-SuppeFl
of youth fields in Costa Mesa.
On another day we collected
over 650 postcards supporting
youth fields in Costa Mesa. These
have all been presented 10 the
council. Wha t's been done?
NOTHI NG!!
CMY AC made a present:ition
before the new parks commission.
their recommencfa tion to the coun-
cil was unani mous in support of
improved youth athletic fields. ~
In fact, Dick Mchren of the
parks comm1ss1o n said after tour-
ing the school and parks sites in
the ciry said )Outh facilitie~ should
be a top p~1ori1y of the parks com-
mission.
We ha .. e made pre!.entatio ns lo
the kiwanai. Club. the Lions Club,
and Mes:i Pride. all of "hich have
been very suppoftive uf CMY AC
and its goals to the tune of donat·
ing over $3,500.
The youth !>ports fa cilities in thii.
city are still JUSt as inadequate and
uni.a re as they were over n year
ago when your pape r recognized
this deficiency.
They arc ~till in 1he i>a mc sad
shape they were in when we began
a11cmp11ng 10 work wJth the ci ty
over three }cars ago.
In fact. it is i.afe 10 i.ay that they
are 1n the sJmc shape 1hcy \\ere in
o'er 20 ye:i ri. ago.

Community college swimming
Watson'.s· Charges appear ready tO defend reputation
By DeMls Brosterhous
Sl>OllS Wrller
Don't look for a decline in the
swimm ing program at Orange
Coast College any time soon.
But, the men's champion~hlp last
year was the first ever for the
school.
Last Sa1urday's effo rts at the
Santa Monica Relays (held at El
Camino College's indoor pool be-
cause of the · rain) only served to
bolster the Pirates' optimism for
another ba nner season in the pool.
Among the swims was the effort
of Matthias Otte, a 6-foot-8 tran!.·
fer from Germany who led off the
400 backstroke relay in the rapid
time of 52.88, a state qualifying
standard.
