of Franz Kafka and Lewis Carroll, the play finds
a young chap named Dude -a dedicated
trasher, graffitiist aod foulmouth -whisked
aw~ to a world far more evil than Satan's.
Dude's escorts, Sowhat and Whocarcs, take
him first to the Land of the True Trashers,
thence to meet the Grunts or Foulmouth. There
be finds a population wbo speak-only their QWn
brand or gutterianguage:
Flurg! Flurg! Flurgl says-one Grunt. Blurg it,
tu.mwiddyl sneers another.
"Can't they talk?" Dude asks.
"They used so many bad words over the years," says Sowhtst,
"they forgot all the others."
"If I stick around' here, I won't be able to say anything but bad
words?" Dude wonders. "Right," says Whocares. "You won't
need any other words."
"What a downer," Dude declares as he is led into the Vandal
Venue, where everything is smashed and trashed. "What do you
do when you get tired or looking at tom up stuff?,, Dude asks
during a break in a destruction party.
"You break up more stufLyou tear it up forever ... then you live
in the middle of it," gloats a trasher.
"It's gross.," Dude rell'!ats just before he is hustled off to an
even Jowcr level, l~ Venue of the Utterly Ignorant.
"Hey, I'm oot stupid, I can learn anything I want to," Dude
protests. "Then why don't you?" Whocares asks.
"I don't want t.o,'' Dude declares. "That's it(T}\at's
ig;norant!"Sowbat shouts. Adds Whocares: ''Ignorant isn't can 't
learn. Ignorant is just doesn't bOther. You're ignorant ~JI ri·aht."

'Transp.ortation corridors ' are fantasies of developers and thei r po liticians
A billboard aJong Newport

It's about pizza toppings, but
the question might well address
the future of our community.
And if we needed an answer we
got it last week when an Orange
County Superior Court judge told
developers to proceed with their
plans to.build a frecwn~ on the Or~n_sc Coast.
Developers
will tell you they
are "not building

A UlTLE HJSTORY wiU help.
Since the 1960s, the Mission

for the S~n Joaquin Hills upon
the certainty or a 15.5-mile-long
freeway that would drain cars
and trucks from rhe foothills they

So why do the developers wan t
the frec'ray? They say we need n
freeway to reduce traffic on the.
San Diego and Santa Ana
freeways. They mean that
building the San Jonquin Hills
freeway will open
vnst tracts or land
to new
development -
and tens or
thousands or
additional car

roads, They say
the new freeway •
