I did drift into Orange County on the wind of circumstance, but my march lo Southern California was deliberate. I remember one winter in Oregon when something dark and cold oozed down from the permanently overcast sky and infected my being, making me cough and curse for four months until the sun fihally broke through. I vowed to find out where the sun lived in. winter and go there, which makes me about the same as anyone else who lives in this pan of the world, the same as any other car on the freeway. We're not all dopes, those or us who came here to live. Unsuspecting bumpkins, some of us, \\ho didn't realize how congested and expensive it was, or that housing prices would begin to fall as ~n a~ we bought. But generally, we came here with ou r wits about us, trading some things :iway for the chance to live in a benign climate. I'll probably live here the rest or my life, li~ing it on some days, hating it o'n others, grow ing more used to it all the time . But I hope I ne"'cr get so uscJ to it that lose the sen~ that \\C can do better here. It's ne.,er going to be uncrowded in Orange County again. But even crowded places can be \\CU ordered. clean, pleas;in t, \\llh enough spots of tranquility to balance the kinetic energy. We could ha.,e clean air, real transport:uion, commercial building designs Ltrn t in~1te human use, cducauonal institutions that serve the needs of the present and the future. We can demand of the people \\ho want U) to elcc:t them tha t they have some \>1s1on of the way thing!> could be, and at least a 'ague notion of ho" to gct.t~ere. D.iys hkc last Sun day are like anchors 1n the sea drift of C\\>tence. When the rain w Jshcs the dirt from the air and the wind blows through us like a cleansing breath, we ough t to look around and sec "'hat a S\\CCt home \\C could make in this place. A simple word with many complex connotations. Just this one word engenders countless interpretations when one speaks of it in term of the aoonion issue. Anriaoomonists have always claimed a fetus' "right to life" as their main ar- gu1J1ent against the prac1ice. Yet. they have continually presented an unclear definition of "life." Some believe that life begins at the very moment of conception. when the sperm enaers the egg; othe~ feel that life exists after the first trimes- ter of pregnancy. and sull others condemn aooroon outright when it cannot be performed without nsk of death to the woman.
