arrived in Newport Beach. The new city
manaeer. Fresh from Coronado, where
council meetings were
held in the afternoon
and ended with enough
time left for nine holes
o( golf.
Wynn recalls that his
first council meeting in
Newport Beach served
as a nasty wake-up call.
The new administrator
arrived to find the
chamber packed with
an overflow crowd on
hand ranting and Kevin Murphy:
. ravid& about a huge In for a shOcU
proposed apartment
complex called Promontory Point ... I
wondered: 'Is it always like this?' It was kind
of a shock.''
Wynn's replacement, former Alhambra
City Manager Kevin Murphy, may wcU
wonder the same thing tonigbL Fint up on
the council agenda is the Hoag Hospital
master plan, a sure-bet to draw a crowd.
Welcome to Newport Beach, Kevin.

Fed buys its red
ink by the barrel
A pparently nobody else in the pcrnmenl would, so Chris c.ox did.
What our Congressman did (along with colleague Sonny
Callahan of Alabama) wu publish 1n annual report of that
enormous business that ii the United Stales of America.
The report is not 1 pretty sight.
But 1t least there is some humor in it. Actually, just one modest
chuckle: over one of the lines in Cox's note that accompanies the
report.
On the
Coast
Talking about a budget-reform bill he has
introduced, Rep. Cox writes, in what surely must
be a wry little joke: "Unless much-needed
reforms contained in this legislation are adopted
soon, we may find our nation drowning in a sea
of red ink."
May find?
Look at the numbers Cox has assembled and
you will find -in genuine red ink -that the ~
bottom line for this business of ours for Fiscal
Year 1991 shows a loss of two hundred sixty
eight billion, seven hundred twenty nine million
dollars. And some change.
What the hell. Maybe the Congress should just
write a check on that slick bank of theirs for a
. quarter of a trillion bucks and be done with it.
-----J ust a thought. That is not to imply, or for you to infer, that Mr. Cox was one
of the House hacks who bounced checks. He certainly was not,
which isn't really surprising. One would expect no less.
One would expect no less of Barbara Boxer, either. You
remember her, don't you; the feisty Congresswoman who would be
one of CaUfomia's senators? They call her Barbara Bouncer now.
When she was campaigning in Newport Beach la.st fall, I had
the opportunity to meet Mrs. Boxer, chat with her a bit and,
naturally, I wrote a column about her.
Thal, of course, earned me a place on her mailing list. In fact, I
got a Jetter from Barbara just last week. In a masterpiece of bad
timing. B?rbara wrote:
The Big Spender, accord-
ing to Cox's numbers,
is ... The President -old
Read My Lips himself,
with a 22 percent in-
crease!
" ... one of the best ways to
make certain we win the
economic battle of the
decade is for (California
voters) to elect a Senator
who will stand and fight for
economic fairness :ind
common decency ... "
The letter arrived on the
day Mrs. Boxer admitted to
bouncing 87 checks over 39
months. Oooops!
While that was a lot more
than Dana Rohrnbacher
bounced, it paled in comparison(\O the hundreds or checks
bounced by the guy from Coron3a0. Still, it's probably enough to
bounce Barbara right out or contention.
Guns Who: If there were a boOby prize for the U.S.
government body with the biggest percentage increase in Fiscal
'91, what ":ould you pick? HUD, HEW, Social Security? The
Congress? Nope.
The Big Spender, according to Cox's numbers, is ... the envelope
pleasc ... Thc President -old Read My Lips himself, with a 22
•percent increase! Granted, in the great scheme or things, it's only
chump change -$36 million; from $157 million up to $193
million.
Dudln1 Dailies: The Orange County edition or the Los Ange les
Times and the Oranae County Register do love to take whaclcs at
one another.
Jn the latest bed, the Times came out with a More Local Ne""'S
contest. They stuffed an orange crayon into the paper a couple
weeks ago and invited readers to circle nil the local stories. You
send something in "ith the number or crnyon circles and maybe
you win· a Jaguar or something.
The Register quickly came back with posters that showed 11
crnyon and sajd, if you circle all our local news, you'll need a
whole box. Nice counter, guys.

RACE: &qlected
to help . retailers
From A1
Cole cited the end of the 1986
Great American Race, the only
11me in the contest's nine-year
history that studies were done on
the economic imP-act of the event's
finish. That year s finish, in
Wilkes-Barre, Pa., drew a crow,:! of
about 80,000 people, and it
hrought an extra Sl.3 million in
revenues to the community's
busmesses.
Cole said he expects this year's
finish in Costa Mesa to generate
more in revenues than the 1986
fi nish, in part because of inflation
and in part because this year's
event will feature the inaugural
Street Vibrations. Counting
contestants and traveling parties
alone, he said, Street Vibrations
will bring 6,000 people to Costa
Mesa, and the Great American
Race will bring about 800 people.
"It will lead to purchases,
especially lod~g and dining and
shopping," said Lee Heinz,
executive director of the Costa
Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
'It will lead to purchase~.
especially lodging and din-
ing and shopping. We
anticipate that retail sales
will go up dramatically
over that weekend, which
is nonnally a dead week-
end. This should stimulate
the economy very much in
this area.'
-l&--executive director,
Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce
heard about the race don't know
exactly what to expect in terms of
extra sales, but they arc optimistic.
Entrepreneurs
Wb 0 : Pat Quilter, a
4S~year-old La-
guna Beach resident who is
founder, chairman and part
owner of QSC Audio Prod·
ucts Jnc. Quilter also plays
guitar as a hobby, and his'
brother Matt Quiller is a
guitar player with the local
band The Surftones.
What: QSC makes
professional-
grade audio products that
arc used in public address
systems and sound systems.
QSC's products ore used in
sound systems in stadiums,
theaters, nightclubs and in-
stitutions. QSC amplifiers
are also sold to profes-
sional musicians.

"We anticipate that retail sales
will go up dramatically over that
weekend. which is normally a dead
weekend. This should stimulate
the economy very much in this
area."
''The more we get into it, the
more we recognize how big it is,
the potential," said Billie
Bufftngton, marketing director for
the Costa Mesa Marriott Suites.
"To bring in something that will
bring in the leisure traveler will
really help us."
When : Quilter
foµnded the
company, originally known
as Quilter Sound Co., in
July 1968. The company
was a small, struggling out·
fit until the mid-70s, when
it was incorporated and re-
named QSC Audio Prod-
ucts -"to make it sound
more corporate." Also at
JMw~o.lyNM
Pat Quilter is founder and part owner of QSC Audio Products Inc. in Costa Mesa, a maker of profes-
siona~ Quality audio equipment.
Heinz said, too, that media
coverage of the G reat American
Race will help raise awareness of
the community.
"With the ESPN coverage and
the nerwork coverage, people arc
finally going to ltnow where Costa
Mesa is," Heinz said.
Cathy Beck, director of
banquets and catering at Scott's
Seafood Grill & Bar, said she, too,
believes crowds brought by the
Great American Race will be good
for business. She said Scott's will
try to capitalize by having
infonnational postings about the
race in its lounge area. In the
that time, Quilter honed QSC's product line
to focus on professional sound equipment. Where: QSC's headquarters is to-
,cated at 1926 Placentia Av-
enue in Costa Mesa. As the company has
ou1grown thiit facility, it has been forced to
spread out its operations in several Cos1:i
Mesa buildings. In June, the company will
consolidate its operations to a building it
leased at 1675 MacArthur Boulevard, also in
Costa Mesa. QSC's products arc sold world-
wide.
remains the comp:iny's senior technical ex-
ecutive. ff ow = Quilter's company hns grown
steadily, in part because of two
key philowphics it has adopted. First, QSC
is compc1i1ivc on pricing, but tries 10 be a
leader in quality nnd service. Secondly, the
company empowers its four executives and
115 employees to be involved and have a
voice in how QSC is run. Those philosophies
have helped QSC grow in revenues by about
20 percent to 25 percent a year, peaking at
$14 million in 1991. Quilter said the company
will again show s1rong growth this year, in
spite o( the recession, because its burgeoning
export business is compensating for Oat do-
mestic s;iles. The company's new building
will allow for more growth and make QSC's
operations more efficient, Quilter said. He
s:iid, 100, that he's continuing "ith research·
and·dcvelopmcnl programs, including re-
search into digital ::iudio :ind th~ use of com-
puters in audio. in order to keep pace "'ilh

past, she said, Scott's hasn't even
been open on July 4.
"l think it will have an impact,
but the word has to get out," Bee.It
said.
Diane Pritchett, executive
director of the South Coast Metro
Alliance, 1'greed. Despite the
economic potential of the event,
she said, most business owners
aren't yet aware the Great
American Race is coming to town.
Pritchett, Heinz and other
organizers of the Great American
Race weekend are now seeking
companies that will buy
sponsorships and help cover the
estimated $60,000 in local
expenses associated with the
events.
Why : QSC is the only career Quiller
has ever had. Then an engineering
student at Cal State Long Beach, he dropped
out of college to start his own business. He
said be started the company because he
wanted to work for himself and because he
was interested in audio technology. Quilter
"We're only just beginning to go
out and talk to businesses,"
Pritchett said. "People arc excited
when they hear about it."

Browsing through the Spy
Factory catalog, one might wonder
why any lnw-abiding citizen would
need to buy such items as the
"Bionic Ear," or the "Dark
Invader" infrared night scope that
"provides a detniled facial
identification at ranges up to 500
feet in total dark conditions,"
much less the professionnl
lock-pick set.
But Raine says such items have
lots of legi1imate uses. The
lock-pick sets are used by
locksmi1hs, tow truck drivers and
apartment managers, he says. A
homeowner or security officer
looking for intruders could use the
infrared light scopes, and the
"Bionic Ear" is advertised as a
useful tool for hunters and bird
watchers.
S ome of the store's customers

suspected he was using the phone
to se t up drug deals.
Raine admits the store's
products -wh ich include a
variety of stun guns -can be
abused. O ne of the more
intimidating stun guns is the $259

weapon, which requires no permit

hot blue electricity in
wicked-sound,ng cracks and snaps.
"People tell us what they're

Senior Citizen's Club moving activities into public-funded center
By Anna Cekola

C OSTA MESA -For 26 years, the
Cost:i Mesa Senior Citizen's Club has
been doing things on its own, ewlving
from a small group of avid bridge pla)'ers to
a 1,000-member organization with a wide
array of activities.
But with the slated opening of the $2.5
million Costa Mesa Senior Center in June,
the city-sponsored club is set to make one of
its biggest changes ever and move its ac-
tivities into the public-funded center. (The
center will be operated by the non-prorit
Costa Mesa Senior Citizen Corporation, cre-
ated by the city in 1986.)
Such a monumental change is causing a
great deal of anxiety among members of the
group, who wonder if they will be able to re-
tain their club identity and keep any sort or
control over the scheduling of their many ac-
tivities.
While club members say they appreciate
that the corporation will try nnd organize ac-
tivities for all the estimated 16,000 seniors in
Costa Mesa, they hope their club will remain
vital.

Then, as now, the team agreed to recommit itself to the future.
It is a future, most agree , as inevitable as it is bright.

Another fielding error was rol-

He was greeted by Kchrli's sec-

by OeCinces, a walk to Theo

by Susson and a two-run single by
Dave Angeloni.
Mike Eadie was then brought

order by getting the final out on a

Chelius' day on the mound also
ended in the fifth as he yielded a
single to Stewart and Chris

walking Anderson.
Magers called on Bryson Groat,
and the sophOmore left-hander
only allowed one of his inherited
runners to score. Branon Coluc·

in the inning.
The fifth ended with a double
play on a soft line drive by desig-

the runner off first .
"George really pitched well, he's
4-0 now," said Magers, who will
also have his ace ready for the

Daft Glenn is shedding no special tears followang a scma-
f Ulals exit at the 25·team Dos Pueblos Invitational at UC Santa
Barbara on Saturday. .
"l'm disappointed we didn't win, but it 's just one or those thangs
in tournaments.'' said Glenn. "Gosh, anyone can beat anyone in a
(single) game to IS." . . .
Peninsula Hip's Panthen rerordcd a lS-13 victory m the sema·
finals to elimimue the Sailors, who entered the quarterfinals as
the No. 1 seed aller wadina through Fountafo Valley, Chatswonh,
Dos Pucblol and Clovis.
Harbor put away Fountain Valley, lS·ll, lS-4, then disposed of
the next three, lS-6, lS-S: IS-6. IS-8; and lS-4, IS-S.
In tbe quarterfmall San Marcos was a IS-1 l victim, then Penin-
sula lhoc:kcd the No. I-ranked Sailors with the 15-13 verdict.
Peninsula moved into the fmals and was turned back by 3-A
power Royal, lS-12.
"We were up 9-4 (against Peninsula) but then they got a couple
o( jump serves," recalled Glenn. "Our pool wun't very difficult
and then all of a sudden we were in the playoffs in a one-game
situation." .
Setter Russell Gan was an all-tournament choice for the Sailors
on a day which proJ,Fd less than satisfyin&-
Harbor remains 1'0 in dual meet competition and the only real
detriment comes in potentially dropping the Sailors in tbc 4-A
CIF rankings -perhaps to No. 3 behind Loyola and Peninsula.
Next up for Harbor is Dana HiJJs on Wednesday in a final tune·
up before Sea View League action, starting March 31 against in-
vading Corona del Mar.
"The .kids, and the coach, arc a little tired at this point," con-
tinued Glenn. "This (one match with Dana Hills on Wednesday in
a 10-day span between the Dos Pueblos Tourney and the Sea
View opener) is going to be a good week to get in the weight
room and do a few things."
•Corona del Mar finished third in its pool and failed to ad-
vance despite lop performances from junior middle blocker Kyle
Thompson, outside hitter Derck Slingsby and sophomore middle
blocker Brooks Hoppe.
"The team kept playing better and better," said CdM first-year
coach Joey Fuschetti. "lt was kind or frustrating not advancing."
Among the Sea Kings' victories in pool play were again t fellow
Sea View League member Univer ity. CdM also split ~ith Har·

down, she had always wanted to

Mclaren, the epitome of a

that requires more than merely

''One of the best things about

being a part of team sports,
that's what I think about in life
in general. I love people in gen-
eral and getting close to my
teammates."
No wonder Stanford wanted
her so desperately. How could it
resist?
Early in her volleyball career,
Mclaren became burned out.
Her club teams won Junior Na-

eighth grade years, respectively,
