evidence to convict him," Dannemeyer

Bright ideas light up science fair
Paularino parents,
students team up
to fi ll scie nce gap
By Joyce Bodlovich
SIJtl Wnter
T hird grader Ryan lieu
arranged the solar light
demonstration, stepped
aside and explained his science
project.
"My dad and L went to Radio
Shack and bought the solar cells.
We couldn't use the sun so we
bought a flashlight," said the
8-year-old youngster. "The light
hits the solar cell and it changes
light into electricity. You can use
it to run a motor. to cook dinner
or like run a car."
Paularino Elementary School's
Science Night was not JUSt for
the upper grades as Ryan
showed. The second annual
event featured all-level projects
by individuals, groups and
classes. The designs ranged from
a volcano eruption to an
elaborate mouse maze.
The wooden and glass maze
was built by Jennifer Smith, 7,
and her 9-year-old brother
Steven, \\ith a little help from
Dad.
"I did all the glass and the
walls and put the food in,''
J ennifer said. "I learned that
mi1=e ha'e to take a long time lo
do things."
Steven, who said he named the
mouse Sno" ball, admitted to a
few problems v. i1h the rodent.

"We tried two mouses and
they won't eat food," he said.
"And we had to keep making the
walls bigger so the mouse can't
ge t over.'' ' Bruce Holland, 6, \\-ith his anatomy demonstration at the Paularino School Science hir.
Principal Drooke Booth said
the science fair is as much fun for the children a~ it is for the ;1dults.
'The parents are very involved,'' she ~aid. '"It is a "ell-rounded
program because each class has a project and
jog-a-thon fund to bring a privately-run science program to its
classroom and to buy Foss Kits (Cull option science system). The kits

then the children can do an indh idual one if
they choose."
The science fair is the br:iinchild of parent
volunteer Margo Hacker. The former teacher
and mother of two sons, began the e~hibition
to increase student interest in science.
"Science is nor really mandated by the
district," she !>aid. "We wanted to raise

school class called Science Adventures
taught by Keny Deline from the Fullerton

teachers arc starting to incorporate more science in the classroon,,"

T he right or voters to select

Indeed, 1he

The greater the

The absence of competitive

one-parly authoritari:in and
totalit:irian regimes.
If the key to democr:icy is
11compctition," it's absence is the
key to understanding Republican
Party politics in Orange County.
The idea of 0 electoral
competition" is as foreign (and os
frightening) to the Republican
Party elite in Orange County as it
was to Ortega In Nicaragua or
Honecker in the German •
Democralic Republic.
"Compe1i1ion" for Orange
CQunty RepubliCDns usually
means tromping Democrats in
general elections. But, as recent
actions by party elites show,
competition in primary elections
as about as welcomed as ants at a
Sunday afternoon picnic. Paray
leaders have '"strongly
discouraged" local elected
officials from challenging
Republican incumbents holding
seats in the srnte Assembly.
Like"ise. Rep. Robert Dornan
was busy intimidating potential
supporters of his primary
opponent, former Superior Court
Judge Judith Ryan, in an attempt
to nip her primary challenge in
the bud. This is probably a
serious undc~tatement of the
iron-fisted tactics utilized by
party officials to keep
compcti1ion in the pany to an
absolute minimum.
The party of Lincoln in Orange
County has become the party or
careerists "ho behave more like
StaliniMs than democrats. When
Abraham Lincoln neared the end
of his first (and only) term in the
House of Representatives he
voluntarily stepped down from
office so that another Republican
could run in this predominantly
Republican district in Illinois.
Lincoln, like many public officials
in the 19th century, appreciated
the virtues and benefits of a
voluntary system of rotation in
office. Shamefully, Lincoln's
e\amplc is arrogantly ignored by
Orange County Republicans ben1
on preserving careers ratl~er than
ensuring political accountabilily
and opening up public scr"icc
new faces and ideas.
T he sarong-arm tactics of the
party eli1e to stifle
intra-party competition whenever
possible le~llh me to wonder "hat
it is they ha'e to fear. Surely, it's
not losing the general election,
not in a county where
Republicans outnumber
Democrats an)'\\here from three
or t\\O to one. It is paranoid al
best to believe Republicans will
not be elected to Senate,
Assembly, and congre~ional scats
if there is competition in the
primary. In the final anal}sis, the
voters should decide if Robert
Dornan or Judith Ryan or
Mickey Conroy or Robert Curtis
• should carry the party's mantle in
the Novembe r election; not the
party elite. This decision is too
important.
Neither Republican voters nor
democratic politi~ are

omcials deny request for local businesses to ban smoking
By Iris Yokol

NEWPORT BEACH -City officials
snuffed out a request Monday to ban
smoking at all restaurants and workplaces
but did agree to a strict no-smoking law at
city hall, hoping that might set a trend for
local businesses to follow.
But Monday afternoon, after discussing
such changes as requiring SO percent of
restaurnnt spaces to be non-smoking
areas, the council decided against chang-
ing the scven-ycar·old law and agreed
simply to try a smoking ban in city hall.

asked the council for the ban, saying the
city's existing law does not protect non-

"I don't think we should be playing

As for the need for more women candidates,
Al lred said the "nightmare" confirmation bat·
tie between now-U.S. Supreme Court Justice
Oarence Thomas and law professor Anita Hill
last fa ll could have been avoided had more
women been seated in the U.S. Senate .
"They tarred her, they feat hered her, and
they hung her up as an example to all women
who might be uppity enough to speak out

Allred said. "It was a public inquisition of Pro-

Despite the seemingly never-ending crusad

she'll continue to pursue probably her most im·

In the spirit of the "Choices" luncheon, All-

believes all women can take to make a dif·

"The Ollly moral choice we ca n make is to

Hospital executives spent three
years drafting their plan and say
they added landscaping and re-

response to comm unity concerns.
The proposed master plan "re-

Michae l Stephens.

One of her most celebrated law cases in-

bulky and high and would be built
on a sensitive wetlands area that
should be preserved.
The new cancer center built on
the lower site has already blocked
views from the bicycle path and
dropped nearby homes' property
values, the resident.s contend.
The Planning Commission's
February nod to the plan and a
25-year development agreement
disappointed these neighbors and
environmentalists, who have pro-
posed nn alternative development
plan that would move SO percent
of the planned lower-campus con·
struction to the upper campus.
Proponents contend this alte r·
nate plan protects the wetlands
and views from the blufftop bi·
cycle path, prevents noise and traf·
fic pollution along busy Coast
Highway and saves the hospital at
least $6.5 million.
But Hoag officials contend this
density-shift plan is unworkable
because it would cram too much
onto the upper campus, causing
construction and traffic problems
that would add at least SSS million
to costs.
The Planning Commission took
no action, nor made any comment.
on the alternative plan. After five
meetings, the commission re·
stricted some setbacks and expan-
sion of the criticaJ care wing but
genernlly recommended fhe coun-

Estancia, Newport
JV softbal.I teams
eager to get it on
A ftcr playi ng against teams Crom admittedly strooget leagues
in the preseason, Estancia High junior varsity softball coach
Mike Campbell is naturally eager to start play in the Pacific
Coast League within the next couple of weeks.
"We've been up against school.s th at play in much tougher (soft·
ball) league!>," said Campbell. "We've played Dana Hills, Magno-
lia, Orange and Westminster and haven't won yet.
"Some of these teams we've been playing h:ive kids that have
competc<l on travel teams. I'd say tha t about 95 percent of our
kids neve r have; in fact. \\C have six kids that had never played
softball before. But "hen league begins, l really think we'll do
well."
The Eagles junior varsil) i:. comprised of
mostly freshmen, with "three or four sopho·
mores," according to Campbell.
"There's a lot of teaching involved," he ex-
plained. "That's what we 're trying to do this
yea r, drill on fundamen1als.
··w e also realize that the varsity is going to
lose a 101 of players next year so we're trying to
bu ild for the varsity in 1he future."
Estancia will rely on two pitchers and both are
freshmen. The starter most of th e time will be
Nancy Barnett, with Heather Giraud available
for back-up duty.
"Nancy will be used more than Heather," said
Campbell. "Nancy's still k arning. She can be in·
consi:.1ent. but at times she can get it ove r the
plate. That's \\hat we strive \\ith thci.c girls,

the Pirates loom as the clear fa .
vorite to de fend their state
crown.
The women, led by Jenni Shel·
den, Mandi Wightman, Kristen
Welch and Michelle Quigley,
were equally superior. They
topped all with 479Vl points;
Cuesta and Diablo Valley the
nearest competitors at 370 an
334 points.
Shelden was a two-time winner
in the 50 and 100 backstroke;
Wightman dominated the 200
and 500 freestyles; and Wckh
and Quigley did their damage in
various directions.
The domination in the relJys
was, as it was for the men. e)C·
opening '' ith 'ictories in e' cry
relay, going five-for-five.
Coast women \\ere actually be-
hind in scoring going into the
final of the three segments SJt·
urday afternoon, by 'irtue of the
fact OCC has no women divers,
but the overriding issue of relay
domination eventually made a
shambles of the scoring.
The success :it Cuesta was un-
de rscored by the fact the Pirates
not only were head and shoul·
tie rs ahead of the field, but the
coaching staff was also able to
. take a good look at the compe ti·
tion.
Next up for the men and
women is a dual meet at Saddle-
back as Coast returns to Orange
Empire Conference competition.

T wenty years ago, the women who

the woman who admitted she was

and the progress young women in the '90s
have come to take for granted.
U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics reports
that th e number of women cxeditives,

American work force has risen Crom 32.4
percent in 1983 to 41 percent in 1991.
Even if you don't work outside the home
and never intend to, this is to the
advantage of every female and every male
who loves some female.
Having power in the workplace, or even
having it be possible, in industries once ·

First of all, as women, your need to
earn money could change. Your desire to

could leave. Or your family's economic
need could increase because of some
unforeseeable event. To say nothing about
your daughte rs and granddaughters.
I hate the way she was treated too, and
what I hate even more is that there were
no women on that Senate Commince. We
nt"ed more than female-friendly
legislators; we need female legi lators.
There is nothing that is more likely to
get the attention of the male
establishment than a show of economic
and political women-clout.
If you are a women in her 20's or 30'1

"feminist" turns you off. You think of
unfeminine women who don't like men
much; who are pushy and who don't shave
their legs. Too bad.
"Feminism" is just a shorthand term for
social, legal and educational equality for
women. Get past the lnbcl and most men

giving credence to the fact that Rolling Stone
magazine voted "Never Mind the Bollocks .. .'' a
the second most-important LP or the la t 20 years
(behind o nly The Beatles' .. Sgt. Pepper'! Lonely

The Sex Pistols broke up 10 1979 amid much
controversy. First, there was a biller di pule be-
tween the band (Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones
and Paul Cook) nd their manager Malcolm
McLaren. Second, and perhaps more significantly,
was the death of Vicious, a victim of his own
wretched exec , who died or a heroine overdoso

documented in the film "Sid and Nancy."

. Brain stimulant may ·
~
aid learning, behavior
N atural, safe, brnin stimulants are desirable, and available, but
woefully underutilized, particularly in this country.
In general, brain function is considered more spiritual than
physicaJ, and this attitude blocks interest and progress in the field . Since
there are so few available to &glericnns, (many more are used in
Europe), it is a pity that in 19!°4, one brain stimulant, DMAE
(Di-Methyl-Amino-Ethanol), fell victim to the FDA, the most tyrannicttl
bureaucracy in the "free" world.
DMAE is 3 ''cholinergic" compound known to enhance th~ction of
acetylcholinc, the brain's primary neurotransmitter that is essential for
learning and memory.
OMAE is found abundantly in such foods as anchovies and ardines
which have been dubbed brain foods as studies show they have mild but
definite brain enhancing effects. Prior to the early 19SO's, DMAE was
also a prescription drug marketed by_ Riker labs as "Deanol" or
"Deaner." It was generally accepted as a mild cognitive enhancer,
particularly in children, nnd its FDA approved drug label read that it
was possibly effective for.
1. Leaming problems a™>Ci:11cd with underachieving and shortened
attention span.
2. Dchavior problems nssocinted with hype ractivity.
3. Combined hyperkinetic behavior and learning disorders with
underachieving, reading and speech difficulties, impaired motor
coordination, and impulsive/compulsive behavior, often described :ls
asocial, antisocial, or delinquent.
ln 1983, the FDA required that Riker "provc1" according to FDA
criteria, that the substance was effective for those conditions, :lnd this
was the death knell for the drug. Since the p:ucnt bad nrn ou1. Riker
dropped it rather than spend the obli&atory millions for
"proor• studies.
However, studies do show it to be effective and the
drug would likely help a lot of kjds, panicularly those
with only mild dysfunction that would not be good c:in·
didates for Ritalin, a strong amphetamine stimulant.
Incredibly, Ritalin is the only drug used for attention
deficit disorder (ADO).
DMAE, in one study consisting of 108 children, pro-
duced fair to good improvement in 71 ~rccnt of chit·
dren with learning nnd behavior problems. These chit·
dren exhibited a decrease in hyperactivity, a lengthened
attention span, decreased irrit:lbility, better scholastic
ability and in some, an increase in l.Q. Health
Update
F
Like amphetamines. DMAE is 11 stimulant, but un -
like amphetamines, the effect of OM~ is mild and
builds slowly over a period of weeks. Also. it has no
r..:p6rted side effects, and no let down when the drug is discontinued.
One OMAE study rcpcrted thnt oral doses as low as JO to 20 mg per
day produced mild stimulation within a ~ck to 10 d:ays, reducing
daytime fatigue, and producing sounder sleep at night.
In another trial published way back in 1959. DMAE -.as utilized in
patients with chronic fatigue and mild to moderate depression "ith
excellent results including significant imprO\-cment in sleep p:ittcrns.
If it were more widely available, it would have exp:indcd use today
beciuse we now recognize that attention deficit disorder (ADD) often
~rsists throughout adult life, and chronic fatigue. which i.s now H!ry
common, was not even recognized as a problem back "'hen this study
was published.
Forms of DMAE arc avaiJable over the counter in many health f()()d
stores, but I use the original medication. Biotek., a sm:ill ph;umaceu11cal
company provides DMA.E in 250 mg. tablets, called DNZ.2. It is still
prescription, but pharmacies or physicians can obtain it.
On another note, you had belier stock up on shampoo. Rumor has it
that unless shampoo companies come up with the money to prove th3t
shampoo cleans hair, the FDA is ready to sweep the product from the
shelves.
