Top~_.ss barbers idea alarms officials
~ City scrambles to keep

of adult-oriented businesses
By Iris Yokol
Stalt Wlllr
NEWPORT BEACH -After rub-
bing out illegal massage parlors and
blocking a tanning salon with live lin-
gerie models, city officials are now
tearing their hair out over a possible
topless hair salon in Newport Beach.
An individual interested in opening
such a provocative barber shop called
Licensing Supervisor Glen Everroad a
couple of weeks ago to inquire about
the city's lows for such a business.
The zoning code would restrict
where the business could be located,
but. the city has no other permit re·
quirements or laws regulating such an
establishment, Everroad said.
"It's a brand-new concept," Ever·
road said of the topless hair salon

In response, the city attorney will
ask the City Council Monday night to
pass an emergency law banning any
new adult entenainment busine!.S
from the city for 45 days, to allow li-
cepsing and legal staff to come up
with specific regulations.
Dut Everroad added that it may be
difficult for city officials to come up
with o comprehensive law that can be
applied to all types of :idult busi-
nesses, since entrepreneurs keep com-
ing up \\ith innovati,e, unusual busi-

Taking some flak,
and firing it back
'You're goina to catch flak on this one.'' my wife said after
readin& my column three Mondays ago .. As usual, she
was right.
It was a column about women in Oran4e County, women in
p<>litics in Orange County and, most specifically, women in. politics
ut Orange County who run against Gil Ferguson.
There were also sidebars about the
arm-twisting that goes on when a Republican
civilian dares challenge a Republican incumbent
in a primary. In Orange County.
Actually, there were a couple of positive
responses. Evelyn Hart, who challenged
Assemblyman Ferguson in the 1988 primary (and
who got whupped pretty good) called. "You
made my day," said the Newport Beach
Councilwoman fPlll More typical was Jean Olson, who griped, Mll'at "Hey, Fred, quit using your column for
-----politicking." I suspect she might have added,
" ... unless I agree with what you're politicking
about." On the
·coast The grand-slammer of the lot, however, was
Rhonda Priestley of Corona del Mar. She wrote
not to me, but to the Pilot's "OP/ED Department." Said column,
she steamed, "was about as silly and wrong-headed as a writer can
get."
Then Ms. Priestley used the dreaded "L" word. "I'm sure
Ferguson doesn't mind Martin or other liberal writers taking out
after him ... after all he's always baiting their kind ...
"Our area, contrary to his opinion, is unusual in having had a
very large number of Republican women elected to office ... " and
she cites "the women who sit on the city councils of Irvine, Costa
Mesa and Newport Beach and many special surrounding district
boards."
That sounded familiar; I'd read it somewhere recently. Darned
if it wasn't in my own column: "In recent years," it said, "we have
even allowed a few of our gals to serve on school boards and city
councils. But ... wc have allowed precious few to go on from there."
Ms. Priestley's retort
I n truth, what we don't
know, from her letter, is
that Ms. Priestley is Gil's
kid. Rhonda Ferguson
Priestley.
actually does provide a new
insight: "(Mr. Ferguson) is
endorsing Councilwoman Pat
Bates of Laguna Niguel to
fill the new south county
Assembly scat which used to
be part of his district."
Now that's good, positive
information. I didn't know
that and l am delighted to
hear it. But then she turns
surly: "So I don't understand
you r bl:uhcring on about Republicans in this area not supporting
women in f ublic office."
ln case did n't know, she adds that Mr. Ferguson has "set
records for getting the most votes in the state in previous elections
and I expect he will do so again." I expect she is right.
~is. Priestley says she's sure Mr. Ferguson "hasn't tried to
dissuade anyone from running for office." I'm sure he has not,
and I djd not write that he had.
What l did say is that Republican party leaders, elected and
otherwise, put the squeeze on almost every would be
incumbcnt-chaJlengers, including Evelyn Hart and Ph)·llis Badham
whe n they chose to run against Mr. Ferguson.
Ms. Pnestlcy concludes: "I h;ivc no idea what purpose you
hoped to achieve by your inane column, other than to show your
political ignorance and bia.s."
Sec, there it is again. I'm biased because l don't agree with her,
just as I shouldn't use my column for "politkking" because I don't
agree with Ms. Olson. or vice versa. l guess certain freedoms -
speech, opinion -arc a crock around here.
Apparently referring to my "political ignorance and bias," Ms.
Priestley gets in the last word: "OK. so now we know," she states.
Hmmm. ln truth, what we don't know, from her letter, is th:it
Ms. Priestley is Gil's kid. Rhonda Ferguson Priestley. And that's
fine. 1 would hope one of my daughters would come to my
ddcnse if some blatherer got silly and wrongheaded about me.

Entrepreneur
Wh 0 • Bill Allison, a 52-ycar-old Newport Beach
• resident who is owner of Allison Marine. A former
stockbroker, All ison moved to this area from Phoenix in 1966. Wba t• Allison Marine sells boats and Suzuki outboard
• motors. The boats range in size from eight feet
to 36 feet, and they range in price from about $7,000 to about
S60,000. The company sells new boats, and it sells used boats
on consign ment. Allison Marine also used to sell Cobra
recreational vehicles, but the dealership is currently phasing
ou t RVs. When• Allison founded Allison Marine in 1978. He
•sold the company in 1988 to a group under
which the business eventually failed. Allison took back
ownership of the business last year -foreclosing on a note
stemming from the 1988 transaction -and he has since
revive d Allison Marine. Where• Allison M3rine is located at 1555 Newport
• Bouleva rd in Costa Mesa. Most or the
company's customers arc freshwater and saltwater boaters from
Orange Coun1y. Most of the boats Allison Marine sells arc
made by U.S. man ufacturers.
How• The marine industry has been hit hard by the
• recession and by a luxury tax enacted last year, but
Allison Marine has fared relati .. ·ely well. The company's 1991
sales were S 1.5 million, down from a peak of about $3 million
Allison Marine posted in 1979 and again in 1988. Despite the
decline, Allison believes he's done well, considering the
economy. He said his two largest competitors have gone out of
business, which should bode well for Allison Morine when the
boat market improves. He said Allison Marine has succeeded
by offering good values and service, and by adapting to trends
in the marketplace. For example, he said, Allison Marine
started selling the Century line or boats when that line became
popular, and it is now capi1alizing on the current popularity of
alu01inum boats.
Lesson Learned• "You have to deliver a
• good, honest value to
the customer and be there to provide service," Allison said.
''When people buy a big-ticket item, they want to know that
you'll be there to take care of any problems. Also, we're
relatively conse rvative about growth. We're not trying to be the
biggest. We don'1 have aspirations of having a second store."

CONSTANT
VIGILANCE
A quick look beneath any
front-wbeel drive or four~whecl
drive automobile is likely to re-
veal the pre ence of rubber
boots at tne wheel ends ~
front-wheel drive half shafts. Be-
neath these rubber casings arc
pan known as constant velocity
(CV) joints. More complex than
traditional universal joints, CV
joints allow powered wheels to
steer as well as rotate and
bounce. Even some rear-wheel
drive cars with indeecndent ~s
pcn!iions utilize CV JOints at THe
wheels and at the center dif-
ferential. The key to their con-
tinued good operation is a rub-
ber boot that i.s clean and iniact.
Once a boot tears or cracks, the
grease inside may be contami-
n:ued with din. If so, costly CV-
JOint repairs may result. It pays.
then to have these boots
checked regularly and replaced
a necc~ by the auto techni-
cian.
HINT: CV joints fail over a
matter of weeks, with indica-
tions of a faint dicking sound
when turning comers and ac-
celerating.
TOWING ·t
THE LINE
It used to be that getting 1
tow for an incapacitated car :.I
accomplished by auaching some
chains and hooks to the car's
undcrbody with a tow bar. How-
ever, towa.n~ is no longer so sim·
pie. Todays automobiles b .. ve
air dams, electronicaH~
controlled suspensions, and a.U-
whccl drive systems that can be
damaged by an improper tow.
Many of the newer can must be
picked up with wheel-lift devices
("cal.le claws") that lift the en-
tire 1ront end of the car off the
ground by holding the front
wheels in slin~. Other autos
must be carried off on flatbed
trucks. Nor only do car ma.nu·
facturcrs specify which towuin&
technique is compatible .-ii
their cars, but then pose speed
and distance limitations on
towning. Car owners should be-
come familiar with their cars'
towmg specificat1ons before fk
need arises.

Chance ol light rain today
COSTA MESA - A weak
weather front that caused scat·
tered showers this weekend, is ex·
peeled to start moving out the
area by tonight, but not before
possibly leaving a few more sprin·
kles today.
Forecasters with the National
Weather Service arc calling for
mostly cloudy skies today, with a
30 percent chance of rain and
winds from the south and south·
west up to 12 mph. Temperatures
will reach a high in the upper 60s
and drop into the mid 50s tonight.
On Tuesday, forecasters arc
calling for similar cloudy condi·
tions and con tinued mild tempera·
tu res.
By Wednesday, temperatures
should start rising and the skies
will clear, forecasters said.

Auto shop serves meals, and more; to needy

COST A MESA An unlikely
setting in front of a Superior Av·

ha~est Sunday afternoon for
neighboring Share Our Selves and
the local poor.
After 10 weeks of collecting
canned food in exchange for free
and discounted auto repair work1
BCM Automotive pre!lident Ron
Charter handed O\'Cr to SOS about
4,000 non-pcrish:iblc food items
stuffed in the back of a pickup.
"People JUSt really responded to
the food drive," Charter said. "l
think it's just bccau e of the
times."
As part of the food drive finale,
the auto shop held a charity lunch-
eon for any person in need. 13y
noon, Charter had served hot
dogs, potato salad and beans to
about 40 people, who sat at tables
in the front work yard of the auto
shop, located in the rear building
at 1630 Superior Ave. He was pre·
pared to serve up to 300.
"I wanted to really end 1he food
drive on a po~itive, upbeat note,"
he said.
It was the first time Theresa
Stock, i.vho !IOmctimes receives
help through SOS, said she had
ever received n free meal at an
auto shop.
"It's good, it's just nice of the41'

SOS Executive Director Barbata

DCM effort, not only because

cau c it comes from a neighbor.
Since being evicted by the city
from the Rea Community Ce"9k
two years ago because or problems
with residential neighbors, SOS
has worked h:ird to build a good

year, we have four. We 've more than doubled the size of our girls
program -this year we have 26; last year we had 12. So it's pretty
C).Citing.
"We're now fairly competitive. Last year, we were not competitive.
A lot of the girls have been talking amongst themselves, bringing out
more girls. especially the younger girls. There are a lot of freshmen
.ind sophomores, so ~e're definitely building.''
Twin freshmen sisters Leslie and Lisa Christiansen have been age-
group 5'\ 1mmers for se-..eral years and both are expected to c.lrry a
hea"y load for the Mustangs this spring.
"They 're kind of a nice surprise for the varsity," Lynch said. "They
ha\e a lot of experience and they're really strong swimmers." Lisa
Christjansen has gone just over a minute in the 100-yard freestyle
while the :?DO-yard individual medley appears to be Leslie Chris-
tiansen's forte.
Many quality times are also expected this season from senior dis-
rance frecstylers Liz Lorenz and Kelly Steele and junior backstroker
Jill Meyers.
"Trabuco Hills and Laguna Hills both ha'e a lot of I.ids," Lynch
~aid. "Both of those schools are in Sourh Orange County and they
have some draw from rhe Mission Viejo Natadors (national power in
club 5'\immmg). I kno" those schools ha'e dra,,n from there in the
past, that's '' hy those teams are so tough. They Just get a lot of kids.
"Estancia has a lot of girls, too, about 45, so they're going to be
tough for our girls to bear. We should be third or fourth in league -
'~e beat LJguna Beach (43-33) and \\e should beat Century."

Mater Dei' s Mayer appears
ready tor big senior season
I f senior Phil I\ ta} er could swim every
race. Mater Dei High \\OUld probably
ha'e a winner in each one.
There is li11le that Mayer, the holder of
four !\tater Dei boys sv.imming records, has
not accomplished dunng his four year'>.
In addition to his individual school stand·
ards in the SO-yard freestyle (2!.8) and :oo individual medley
(2:05.4 ). Mayer has been a part of the 'chool's record-sct1ing
200 free and medley relay teams.
Which leg does Mayer swim? "Any leg." Mater Dei co-coach
Rich Blanc said. "Except the breaststrol..e."
Ma)er has alrcad) qualified for the Clr 3-A meet in the
100-yard bacl..srroke (59.4), 200 indi vidual medley and 500 free
(4:57). "This )Car we're hoping to use him a lot in the freestyle
sprints, as well ... Blanc said.
Three sophomores -Don Turk (bre.tststroker). Mike Ciec-
ek {breastst roker and 500 free) and Tony V1ll.1lobos (bad.stro-
ker and bu11ern1er) -are returning lettermen e:\pected to
make a big splash this year. Another sophomore, Steve
Burkhalter. was recenrly called up to rhe varsiry afrer setting
school frosh-soph records in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
Juniors Tom Broyles (sprint freest) kr} and Brian Kirland
(backstroker) are quality newcomers. La!>t year, Kirland se t a

Felll gives Mustangs
solld punch up front
J ason Lynch, Costa Mesa High's third-year
boys swim coach, expects a middle-of-the-
pack finish for his squad this spring in the
Pacific Coast League.
There will be plenty of first-place touches,
however, when speaking of a few Costa Mesa
individuals, most notably junior sprfnt-f reestylcr
Greg Felli, who won the frosh-soph league title in the 100-yard
free a year ago.
Felli, who also swims the 50 and 200 free, sp{inted the 100
free in 52.4 last Wednesday in a league dual meet against La·
guna Beach (the CIF qualifying standard in that event is 50.0).
Felli, who helped Costa Mesa to a 55-31 victory over Laguna
Beach, went 52.8 in the 100 free last year while winning the
frosh-soph championship.
"We only had one varsity swimmer last year," Lynch said.
"We swam them down on frosh-soph. Laguna Hills and Tra-
buco Hills are probably the top teams in the lengue. I'm hop-
ing for third or fourth -that's where we fit in. Trabuco Hills
and Laguna Hills hnve the numbers and that helps for scoring
in a meet. The more people you have in an event, the more
points you're going to get.
"Obviously we beat Laguna Beach and we'll beat Century,
but Esrnncia will be a close meet."
ln nddition 10 Felli, sophomore backstrolcer Steve Fiduccia
and junior breaststroker. J.R. Porter (a best of 1:08.9) are two
others who Lynch and assistants Scott Larsen and Kittrcn
Spiridonoff arc counting on for quick times.
Fiduccia swam 1:01.8 last year in the 100-yard b:ick, which is
about one second short of the CIF qualifying standard. "We're
hoping he makes CIF, also," Lynch s:iid. ...,

Monarchs take their last
few dips in shallow pool
T his couJd be the fin:il year of the Mater Dei
High girls swimming dynasty.
Under co-coaches (and brothers) Rich and
Ron Blanc, the Monarchs have won 32 consecutive
dual meets and four league championships in a
row, three in the San Fernando Valley League and
last year in the Angelus League.
Next year, however, the Monarchs enter the
South Coast League, where CfF 4-A powers El Toro and Mission
Viejo loom. "1 guess we're the lucky ones," Ron Blanc said.
Mater Dei, 11-0 in duaJ meets a year ago, is led by senior sensation
Jcnnif er Antimarino, an All-American last spring in the 200 ( 1 :53.7)
and 500 free (4:59.3) who owns four school records in all .
Antimarino, headed for either Michigan, USC, Peppcrdine or UC
Santa Barbara next year, :ilso holds school st.indards in the 100-yard
butterfly (J :01.59) and 100 free (55.21), both set this year.
Senior Jennifer Kast, a four-year v:irsily swimmer along with Anti-
marino, won the league ch3mJ>ionsh1p last season in the 100 butterfly
( 1 :03.08) and 100 backstroke {1:03.5).
Mater Dei, which moved up to 3-A last year after winning the CIF
2-A title in 1990, also has four quality juniors and one sophomore,
Melanie Chiang (25.83 50 frec ),•who arc expected ro keep its "inning
srrcak intact -at least fo r another spring.
Sprint frecsryler Michelle Pereira (qualified for CIF in the 100
free), breast-and back.stroker Katie Ward, sprint free t) lcr Lc:.he
Darbazette (qualified for CIF two years ago in the 100 free) and frcc-
stylcr Maria Nicholl arc top-notch juniors. Nicholl also qualified for
CIF two years ago in the 100 and 200 free. but she injured her back
last season.
Mater Dei -although a year away from a possible ruination of its
long winning stre:ilc -api>ears as solid as ever this ~ca.son.
