At the motel, officers found Mark

Littlejohn was treated at the scene by . ,,
paramedics, but officers never confirmed

While interviewing Carabajal about what

The suspect in that heist was described as

NEwPoRT BEACH -After four days at
_Hoag Hospital, Supervisor Thomas Riley
re turned to \VOrk Monday morning and plans
to be at the Board of Supervisors meeting, as
usual, today, aides said.
"He's doing real well," said Riley aide
Christie McDaniel.
Riley, 79, originally admitted to Hoag
Hospital Wednesday afternoon on the advice
of his physician, who noticed that the
supervisor's blood sugar had elevated. After
a battery of tests, doctors determined that
Riley had experienced an allergic reaction to
some new diabetes medication and also had
acute bronchitis.
Although the supervisor's diabetes ano
asthma were. brought under·control and he
felt well enough to leave, doctors decided to
keep him in the hospital through the
weekend to monitor his condition.
He was released late Sunday afternoon
and went into his office for a cou ple of hours

his Jerry Brown days. Ding. check·bouncing scandal. Of course, she's
hardly alone. Tough as nails. Has lots of
D.C. experience as a five-term
congresswoman. Big on environmental
issues and women's rights. But ...
Flnals ... Seymour vs. Feinstein. Deep South Conference, powering
through rumors of infidelity, political
favoritism and banging..out. with bad
dudes. He has a cenain charm and has
struck a vein in the Republican Party. He
may still be four years away, though.
"Stop Quayle now, vote for Clinton."
Might be a good campaign slogan.
FIHI• ... Bush vs. Ointon. Bush wins.
Feinstein buys the winter clothing.
Seymour calls up Wilson and asks him if
he knows or any job openings.
But it's closer than anyone imagines.
Orange County provides the edge again.
Senate -Full lerm • People always surprised that Leo
McCarlhy is still around. Yes he is. He's
lieutenant governor, didn't you know. He
seems a little bit too yesterday but still is
a force to be ceckoned with. •Jerry Brown. The sleeper of the
tournament out of the Crazy West
Conference. He went slumping off toward
Japan after his political career fell into
ruin in the mid 80s and returned with a
new sense of anger and a whole set of ·
new bun words. Also is trailblazing a
comeback for turtlenecks. Looming
question: Will California be his undoing?
It is the one state where voters know him.
Could hurt.
Senate -Short Term
•This is John Seymour's seat to lose
and the feeling amona some is that that's
just what he'll do. Seymour used to be
mayor of Anaheim thcJ\ a state senator
representing Costa Mesa before he
gambled it all and ran for lieutenant
governor only to lose the noa1ination to
Marian Bergeson .• As a cons0lation prize,
Gov. Wilson sent him to Washington to
complete his Senate term. Seymour and
Wilson share political ideology, as well as
suit size and general blandness.
• Dianne Feinstein is still the fav ao win
the Democratic nomination. The c:l·mayor
of San Francisco nearly became governor
last year and has been looking for a race
to win ever since. She has a rcputatioo for
being lazy and indecisive -seemingly
winning qualities for O.C. -but registers
a notch or two higher on the charisma
scale than Seymour. Problc~~ in reporling
contributions during her run for governor
may come back to haunt her.
• Bruce Herschensohn's name always
seems to be on the ballot. He keeps
running. He keeps losing. ln the
off-season he docs radio and TV
commentary, cheering the Republican
philosophy. His strength: He has all the
answers. His weakness: He bas all the
answers.
•Mel Levine didn't bounce
a single check during his 10 years
on the Hill. But that ain't enough.
• Some observers are of the thought
that Sonny Bono is doing little more than
providing a laugh track to this contest.
Think again. Sonny, in his certain squeaky
way, is proving to be a popular item with
Republicans. Could be the dark horse.
F1nals ... Bruce vs. Barbara. Best match

gets a real job and Boxer heads north -

Under a 1989 state act, Costa
Mesa -like every city and county
in the slate -will have to cut 25
percent of its total annual waste
by 1995 and 50 percent by 2000.
About 169,700 tons of waste arc
generated each year in Costa
Mesa.
To meet those goals, planners
say the city will have to expand re·
cycling programs for au house-

mulching programs for plant

change their buying habits will be
a major part of the sweeping new

BROSTERHOUS:
From 81
times is the team's leadoCf hitter. Taketa has a team-leading 11
RBI this season.
Defensively, Davis and Mortenson form a solid middle of the
infield for CdM, and have turned a few double plays this season.
Behind the plate, DcGrazier and Eric Schiff share the duties.
"Eric is built like a catcher, tall and bi&,'' said Furukawa.
"DeGrazicr pretty much plays just about any position.''
Sharing time at fint base arc Mike Wilhelm and Jason Drews,
both considered good with the glove. A left-hander, Drews also
can be used on the mound in spot relief.
Another surprise for CdM thus far has been the hilting of left
fielder Ryan Cruttcndcn. "When some of our big hitters started
slumping, he came through," said Furukawa.

The Corona del Mar junior varsity softball learn carried a 3·2
non-league record into Monday's Sea View League opener against
Newport Harbor.
Corona owns victories over Laguna Beach's frosh-soph team
(22-0), Laguna's JV (34-8) and Costa Mesa (13-9). The losses
have come against Costa Mesa and Santa Ana Valley.
CdM won just two games last season, with only one victory com-
ing in league play. .
"Our goal isn't as much to sec how many more games we can
win this year, but rather our cmpfiasis is on giving everyone a
chance to play and giving those who want to make varsity that op-
portunity,' said Corona Coach Eric Findling, in his first seaS<>n as
hc:id coach after assisting both the varsity and JV last year.
"Last year's team usually had nine plnycrs with nobody on the
bench. This year, we have 14 girls and they all play a1 least two in-
nings each. game. And we want them to get experience at more
than one position." · ·
The Sea Kings' pitching chores fall mainly on the shoulders of
freshman Anne Marie Clemons, who bas started every &ame. The.
uam did nol nave a pitcher at the st.art of the season before
Clemons stepped in.
"She has been going to pitching school and has shown some
ability," said Findling of Clemons who is also Corona's cleanup
hiller. "She's still working on her windmill and has been cutt1ng
down on her walks the past couple of games."
The backup pitcher is Eva Scrbcr, who normally will be at sec-
ond base when she's not pitching. Scrber has a hlgh on-base aver·
age and has scored six runs this season.
The team's leadoCf hitter is Allison Hollern, who is also the
startin1 third baseman and backup shortstop ... I like her at lcad-
off," said Findling. "She is 1 sood contact hitter and gets on base.
She has one double and bas scored nine tuns for us and defcn·
sivcly, nothing aets by her."
Sarah Prepas is the siartina second baseman and backup at fint
base. P1'epas hits from the No. 3 spot in the lineup and has three
hit and eight walks in 18 plate appcar~nccs, as well as eight runs
scored and four RBI.
A returner to the JV is Dencllc Re id, a sophomore startina
catcher. "She's aot a very good 1tlitude,•• said Findling. "And she
is our best baserunncr by far. She Jeads the team in stolen basei
and has scored eight runs."
Another returnee is sophomore Tiffany Shinn, who plays at ei-
ther horutop or second base. A &ood fielder, Shinn has KOrcd
six tuns and drive in tbreo more i.n 1o4 plate 1ppcaranccs.
The team also features twin sisters Laura and Oinni Williams.
Both bat ri&ht·banded but Olnnl is a ldt.Jtander on the field.
Laun, who played lut year, 11 the st1rtin1 first baseman, whJJe
Oinni, who did DOI pl1y last year, ls tho 1t.,iin1 center fleldcr.

Pele's affection for the sea was
stimulated by his parents, who
took him cruising off the New

when he was a child. After moving
to Ollifornia, they cruised exten·

Facelift ol. ·the .future improvement over old method
T be facelift of the future, known as the oomposite f acclift, is
available today.
Of particular interest, it has become the first procedure to
adequately address the problem of loose skin or nasolabial
folds (the folds running from the nose along the corners or the
mouth).
In this operation, the skin, fot and muscle of the check arc lifted and
repositioned in one piece and not separated as is done with the standard
lJcelif~ technique. This results in a smooth, ''unpulled" appearance
,, h1ch was not previously possible.
First conceived in Sweden, the composite facelift was fully deve loped
1n 1968 by Dr. Sam Hamra, a plastic and reconstructivc surgeon in
[)all as.
... It is difficult to evaluate a facelift," Hamra said. "Any improvement
" freq uently regarded as a good or acceptable result."
I lamra added that the status of the nasolabial folds and the contours
01 the jawline and neckline need to bc.Lvaluated following surgery.
The composi te facelift produces a result similar to what is seen when
the skin of the cheeks is pulled-upward with the hands. In this
procedure, the total release of skin, muscle and fa t together allows the
tl:ip of the face to be lifted back to its original position. The tradi tional
method does very little to smooth out the folds of the face and often
appea rs mask-like.
Developed in the 1920s, simple skin-lift surgery was the standard
proci:dure used by plastic surgeons. Today, most utilize a technique
' which elevates the deep muscles of the (ace as a separate layer from the
lkin.
........ . ......
This procedure. called SMAS (Superficial Muculo
Aponcurotic System), was considered statc·of-the-art
until 1hc introduction of Harnra's composite facelift.
The skin-only procedure is considered a
first-generation facelift, the SMAS lift is referred 10 as
a second-generation technique and the third genera tion
is the composi1c, the most medically advanced
procedure to date.
The composite lift involves incisions running from
above the• car and extending Crom in ide the car canal
ro behind the car and into the hairline of the neck.
Another Incision ls placed underneath the chin ..
Through these incisions, the skin is lifted approximately
one inch. · Image
lnfonnation At this point, the composite nap begins and the
dissection goes through all layers of the face and
extends to the mouth. The composite flap is then held in place in fro nt
of the ears with dissolvable sutures.
Beneath the chin, 1he neck muscles thal have split apart with age are
folded back together with stitches. This eliminates the "turkey-gobbler"
look. I
For the first time, a facelift is capable of correcting the jowls without
the irregularities associated with liposuction. Every patient's face has its
own natural layer of fat, which is easily manipulated by the surgeon
using the composite technique.
In addition, the problems relating tu the bags of the checks and
nasolabial folds have t'inolly been resolved.
Another benefit of the composite technique involves the neck. The fat
of the neck is not separated irom 1he skin, leaving a smoother, unpullcd
effect. This fat is frequently trimmed to give a sculpted neckline.
There is minimal pain following a composite (accllft. Many times,
however, patients experience numbness of the checks (or four to six
\\.eeks. In addition, the face becomes more swollen after this procedure
than with 1hc standard facelift because the surgery is more involved and
elevutcs deeper layers of the face .
The results speak for themselves. Patients actually look younger
because the fat and jowls arc lifted bnck to their original position. They
appear very natural and youthful without the suggestion of surgery.
0 ver the ycurs following surgery, this facelift ages gracdully since
it is based on the natural repositioning of the patient's anatomy.
Dr. Hamra has introduced the composite faceliCt to nearly half
of the country'~ 2,800 board certified plastic and reconstructivc surgeons.
He estimates, however, that only 100 have mastered the technique.
