the April edition or the Newport Beach city ·

"Measures arc being taken to decrease the
amount or personal -copies made on the City

electronic eye will be watching you ... tr the
paper you arc dupllc:ating docs not contain the
words "City or Newport Beach" on it, the

making personal copies will be asked to pay a

Not so, says Penny
Baskin-Fleming and
her husband John. The couple apparently met
back in 1990 thanks to an ad Penny placed in
the Pilot personals. The couple is celebrating
their fint anniversary on April 27.
Baskin-Flcmin& sajd she still carries the ad
-since laminated -in her wallet. It reads:
"True California girl, S'9", wonderful cook,
loves skiing, scuba, fishing, camping. black tic
and dancing, wants happy secure non·smoking
women's man, 35/.CS to enjoy Iona-term
happiness."
That, apparently, was enough to snaa John
Fleming. 1 teacher at Universiry High School in
Irvine. The couple dated for seven months
before manyina at Saint Andrew's Presbyterian
Church In Newport Beach.
"It WIS the first and only time I have ever
responded to 1 personal ad," said Fleming. "I
was selling my car and just checking out my ad
when I glanced over there and it just popped
out. It wasn't any one word, just the"wholc

Success of wood-craned gitt business music -to their ears
Who: Harry Kohaut Ill and Harry Kohaul Jr., founders of
Kohaut & Co. The younger Kohaut is a 35-year-old
Co~ta Mesa resident, while his father, 62, lives in North Tustin.
What: Kohaut & Co. manufactures wood gift items, such as
music boxes and jewelry boxes. The company's products
:.ire made of solid, exotic woods. Kohaut & Co.'s music boxes, the big-
gest ~egmcnt of the company's product line, range in retail price from
S60 to up" ards of $2,000.' The company also dabbles in other wood
products, such as gave ls and police night sticks.
Whefi : Kohaut & Co. was founded in 1988, after the expirn-
tion of a non-compete agreement the Kohauts had
signed in selling their 92-year-old family business, John C. Kohaut
Inc .. in 19 2. Based in We st Orange, NJ. and founded by Harry Ko-
haut Jr.'s grandfather, John C. Kohaut Inc. also made wobd products.
John C. Kohaut lnc.'s product line was less specialized lhan that of
Kohaut & Co. · Wher e : After selling John C. Kohaut Inc. in 1982, the Ko-
hauts wanted to return to Southern California,
\\here they had lived for many years prior to going back to New Jersey
in 1978 to turn around the family business. Kohaut & Co ... s is based in
Harry Kohaut lll's home in Costa Mesa. The company's· administra-
11\e, finishing and shipping operations are handled in \:os'la ·Mesa,
\\h1le manufacturing and design are based at Harry Kohaut Jr.'s North
Tustin home. The company's products are sold to retailers in all 50
states by a network of sales reprcsenta1hes. Kohaut & Co. is also be·
ginning to export to Japan and Europe. The products are· sold by gift
shops, specially stores, jewelry stores. department stores and some
mail-order services. , Why: The Kohauts researched po!i,ible product oppor14nities
during the period covered by the non-compete agreement,
and they decided to focus on music boxc~. Harry Kohaut Ill said he \ saw great potential •n the mu!iic-box niche because Kehaut & Co. ! • could offer higher-quality wood than mo t competing manufoctureri..
He said he wanted ro eventually go back into business foJ himself be·
cause of his desire to be his own boss.
HOW : Kohaut & Co. po~ted 1991 revenues of ndrly S250,000.
its best year ever. The company has gro'' n steadily since
generating revenues of $29,000 in its fir!.t year. Kohaut & Co. is cur-
rently about 30 percent ahead of its 1991 sales pace. and Harry Ko-
ha ut Ill expects the company to finish the year with revenues of about .
$325,000. He said the two-man compa!'y has been able to keep up
"ith its grow th p11ce so f;lr by "working smart," but it \.\Ill prob:ibly
have to hire and train employees and lease or buy a building by the
time it reaches SS00,000 in annual revenues. Kohaut & Co. is consid-
ering other potential products, such as carousel horses. and it may un·
dertnke joint ventures in order to combine expertises with other man-
ufacturers.. he said.

'Boundary Water' cast, audience
top opening night off with dinner
I t could have been the cooking
scene on stage nnd the smell
of boomboe sesate drifting
over the audience at South Coast
Repertory Theatre.
An'fWty, the appetites of
theatcrgocn at the world premiere
of "Boundary
Waters" seem to
be in good shape
at they partied at
Scott's Seafood
Grill and Bar,
jusl a short stroll
from SCR.
11111 -Of course, the
appctile high
could have easily
been the outlay
of food at the
Socl.ety eatery -pasta
and sauce ·
sending out a
~onderful aroma
f o the cooking station. Cheese,
'fruit, all sorts of little goodies, a
seafood spread and desserts galore
including creme brulce were
offered at buffet tables.
Playwright Barbara Field and
the cast who sear~hcd for the
· snowy owl and did soul·searching
in the woods joined locals for
supper. Actor Nicholas Hormann
as the on-stage chef and during
'· the party said, u1 really do like to
cook and there really is a
boomboc scsate. The playwright
gave me some of it during
rehearsals. I'm hungry now, but
the line is so long."
Frank and Marilyn l ynch made
·t through the line and shared a
table on the patio with E. G.
Chamberlain and John Elliott.
Others seen were Maggie\
Murdy enjoying the creme brulce,
Steve and Hedda Marosi with son
Steve, Elaine and Martin
Weinberg, Anne Conover with
Mark Scott, Elaine Rebecca
Skellern, Carl Mclarand, Nanette
Thompson, Pierce Gannon and
Barbara Aune, who laughed and
snid,''Thc play made me think of
the 50s when eve ryone was
thinking."
Prior to the pl:iy a group of
about 30 who arc members-of the
SCR support group Platinum
Circle (big donors} were doing
dinner over at the Center Club.
Dy the way, there's a new
support group at SCR and the
name is Supporting Cast. Janet
Peters heads the SC whose players
arc mostly )Oung professionals.
Another event being t3lked ,
about at SCR is the mother of all
p3rties -the gala -set Sept. 19
at the South Coast Westin with
Janice Johnson as chair. Her
committee includes Kathleen

Suzanne Peltason, Barbara

Major accounting firms tend to have a more

Accountants and enrolled agents advise clients
who don't have the money to pay their truces to et
least file a return on time and pay as much as they
can. According to Kaylor and other accountants,
the IRS has become more willing to work with
taxpayers on payment plans. Filing a return on
time minimizes penalties.
Jack Oldham, a true partner in the Newporc"

many of his client's companies suffered losses in
1991 and were able to get refunds on tues they
paid in prior years, when they were profitable. He
added that his clients are conservative this year in
the ways they use their refunds.
"They might use it to pay down debt, whe reas
they might have otherwise used it to build an ad-
dition to their house," Oldham said.
Tim Whetsell, another tax partner with Kenneth
Leventhal, said that for some of his firm's clients
who were not-profitable in 1991, true filing is
viewed as an opportunity, rather than as an obli·
