August 1990.

Though Kapus graduated from Edison High School in Hunting-
ton Beach, it was a teenage desire to attend Costa M~sa High
School and be a part of the 4-H/rogram. Her parents, however,
thought the drive was too far an that Kapus would outgrow her
love of animals.

minded her of her own childhood horse. I have Debbie's son, Lil'

he is very._ very ge_!ltle."
WORKETIIC•~~~~~~~~~~~----
Wbcn Kapus was 16, her father fell victim to the massive aero-
space layoff. The expensive .upkeep of Debbie fell on the teen-
ager's shoulders. Kapus said she believes that is the same respon-
sibility the young people gain from tending the Cann animals and
working in the nursery. .
"I remember my dad saying, 'if you want to have toys you have
to work for them,' " she said. "If I wanted to keep my horse, I
had to get a job. So I ended up working 30 hours a week at
Carl's Jr. I .think that was the best thing that happened to me . I
learned responsibility at a young age.
"I sec that same thing happen to the kids here,'' she added. "It
is neat when that hit that stage or discovery and you see the
changes."

1<.apus lives on the 18-acre working farm in a large mobile
home. Along with maintaining the operations of the farm , which
includes about 60 animals, she teaches agriculture classes to
about 100 high school and junior high students.

Grant, Optima merger announced;
union prov~s lrultlul, omclals say
By Tony Cox
Business Edllloi
NEWPORT BEACH -Two
property management firms
based here have merged to form
one of the largest independent
management companies in the
area.
Grant Real Estate Manage·
ment and Optima Asset Man-
agement have combined opera-
tions under the name Optima
Asset Management Services.
The merger, announced Tues-
day, was effective in late Janu-
ary.
The com panies had a com-
bined 16 employees, all of whom
were kept, and more than 2 mil-
lion square feet or retail, office,
industrial and residential prop·
erties under management ' in
Southern California and Ari-
zona.
Optima Asset Management
Services is using Grant's former
corporate offices at 3300 Irvine
Ave . in Newport Beach as its
headquarters. The old Optima
headquarters at 1600 Dove St. in
Newport Beach will be retained
as a marketing and leasing office
of the merged firm.
Although the property man-
age ment business has suffered
during the recession -manage-
ment firms arc normally paid a
percentage of total lease values,
which have declined as a result
or reduced rental rates and in-
creased vacancies -the presi-
dents of Optima and Grant said
their merger was not a product
of distress.
"This was not a merger or a
marriage based on weakness,"
said Douglas C. Morehead, pres-
ident or the former Optima and
now president of the merged
firm . "It was kind of one where

combining the two firm's

Abbey Healthcare posts healthy proof
By Tony Cox
Busms Editor
COSTA MESA -Abbey Healthcare Group Inc.
posted a slight increa'Sc in revenues and a huge im·
provemcnt in profitability in the first quarter of its
current fiscal year, which ended March 28.
The Costa Mesa-based company, a nationwide pro-
vider of home health care services and products,
posted net income of $2 million on revenues of $57.5 m!ll!on in the quarter, which compared with a $1.4
m11l1on net loss on revenues of $55.9 million in 199l's
first quarter.
The turnaround in profits was largely attributable
to a reduction in interest expenses. Abbey spent $1.4
million on inte rest payments in this year's first-quar·
ter, down from $4.9 million in the first quarter or
J 991.
~~ _compa~y, whi~h went public in February with
an in1t1al public offering of common stock that raised
S38.3 million, benefited from a new $85 million line
of credit with GE Capital. The new arrangement gave
Abbey more flexibility to grow and improved the
company's cash flow by reducing its structured princi-
pal payments, company officials said.
Timothy M. Aitken, tht> company's president and
chief executive officer1 ·also cited higher profit mar-
gins and a better rate of customer payments as fac-
tors contributing to Abbey's improved financial condi·
tion.
In addition, the company announced the hirings of
two new key executives. Michael Miller. formerly a
senior vice president with Carelink Home Healthcare,
was named chief operating officer. Abbey hired
Steven Plochocki, who previously held executive posi-
tions with Upjohn Health Care Services and OJ ten;
Health Care, as vice president of marketing and
sales.
Abbey Healthcare has 156 branches in 36 stat es.
The company provides a wide range of respiratory
therapy and infusion therapy services, as well as
home medical and rehabilitation equipment. Abbey's
majority-owned subsidiary, Abbey Pharmaceutical
Services, provides pharmaceutical and infusion ther-
apy services and products to long-term care facilities
in 23 states.

But Bruce Cutler, Gionis' de-
fCJ>iSe attorney, attacked each of
Robinson's contention , saying the
prosecution's case was flimsy and
arguing boisterously that prosccu·

Id the jury, his booming voice
filling the courtroom. "Mr. Robin-

On Oct. 3, 1988, two anned
men followed Wayne and financier
oger Luby into the garage of
Luby'~ gated 22nd Street home as
the couple tetumcd from a mom-

smas hed Wayne's face into th'e
pavement and handcuffed Luby,
pistol-whipped him and tried to
slice his Achilles' tendon.
At the time, Gtonis and Wayne
were embroiled in a bitter divorce
and custody baule ove' their
daughter. Prosecutors allege Gio-
nis paid a private investigator,
Oded Daniel Gal, about S40,000
to hire the two thugs to attack
Wayne; and Luby.
But Gionis' first trial on charges
of conspiracy and assault ended in
a hung jury in December 1990.
Four men, including Gionis and
Gal, were originally named in the
conspiracy. Gal and one of the hit-
mcn, Jeffrey Soucy, turned state's
witnesses. The second attacker,
Jerrel Lee Hintergardt, confessed
to his crime in the final moments
of his trial and was entenced to
eight years in prison.
Gioni has maintain ed his in-

tend the free-"'heeling Gal or-
dered the beatings himself, with·
out Gionis' knowledge. Cutler con-
tends Luby was the target of the
att acks because of his gambling
debts and that Wayne was just an
incidental victim.
, Robinson told the jury Tuesday

Stephan DeSales, Dixon's at-
torney, indicated he hoped reports
on Dixon's psychological problems
and his client's cooperation with
authorities, including signing over
all his assets to the city, would re-
sult in a reduced sentence.
"From the very beginning. Mr.

what he did," DeSalcs said.
"He reels like he's let every sin-

Dixon, who had been a leading
candidate to become city manager
before his dramatic arrest outside
City Hall in January, has given the
city his Huntington Beach condo-
minium, property in Jamaica and
Montego bay, a pricey set of jCw-
clry and a museum-quality collec-
tion of ~58 art photographs. The
city plans to liquidate the belong-
ings, but whether that will add up
to $1.8 million is unclear.
DcSales said that psychiatric ob-
servations collected over two
months of therapy demonstrate
that Dixon was motivated by com-
pulsion, which ''doesn't excuse his
behavior, but very clearly explains
his behavior."

Tuesday's game finally got under way at 4:20, but
sadly for Costa Mesa, the Mustangs didn't get a
chance to hit until around 4:40.
Ian McDonald set the tone or the game by drill·

After a forccout at second, winning pitcher Jason
Abraham hit a ground-rule double over the right·

the Mustangs and Laguna Beach each believed
Tuesday's Pacific Coast League game was to be at
their respective home sites. So when 3: 15 rolled
around, each was limbering up on their own fields
awaiting the arrival or the other team.
At that point, Laguna had batted around against
Mustangs' starter Matt Harber, collecting five runs
(two unearned) on six hits and a throwing error. It
proved to be a deficit from which the Mustangs
could never recover as the Artists (4·11, 3-5) beat
Costa Mesa for the second time this season, 12-3.
"They hit a couple of grounders that get through,
then Matt hangs one and gets it drilled," said a dis·
appointed Green. "Then we ge t a couple or runs to
get back in it, and what happens? They get them
right back and put us right where we were."
Costa Mesa (5-13, 1·7) notched a pair or runs in
the third to try to get back into it. Jeff Nicbling
reached second on the th ird baseman's throwing
error.
Two outs later, Mike Meyer continued his recent
hitting surge with a ground single to right to score
Nicbling, taking second on the throw to the plate.
Matt Jaglowski bunted for a single on an 0·2 pitch
But back-to·back doubles by Abraham and Gar·
ner put the Mul>tangs back in a fhc·run hole, and

"We talked about 1t, and "e decided we 're com·

at Laguna)," said Green. "He's got si."< innings left

PARKING:
The Numbers
are the Problem
By GREG WILLIAMS
As many things as
there are on Newport
Harbor campus that are
imponant there lies a very
important issue and that is
parking. Parking effects
around 65 percent of the
student body.
Unfortunately the
parking availability is not
up to par with the number
of driving students. In t~e ·
school parking lot, there is
only space for just und~r
200 cars to park. Of thi~
200, around 7 5 of the spaces
arc permit parking areas
only.
The other places
that parking is available arc
on the south side of Saint
Andrews Church and along
the school side of .Irvine
Ave. Along the school side
of 15th Street parking is
usually occupied by faculty
members. These numbers
together add up to allow
around 27 5 cars to park on
or near our school campus .
The number of cars
driven by students to school
is roughly 375 a day. This
number allows for a gap of
an estimated 100 parking
spaces.
Although this
doesn't sound like a lot with
275 spaces available. it adds
up when the meter maid
comes by to give tickets to
those cars parked in two
hour zones or in permit
parking zones.
Tickets range from
22 dollars in the two hour
zones to 60 dollars in the
permit zones. These areas
arc checked twice daily by
the Newport Beach Police
Parking Division.
There needs to be
some sort of parking
solution because the parking
is just not adequate for the
number of driving students.
There is however an open
parking area in the varsity
parking lot. There is one
problem though, the wallc
is about a four minute walk
to campus which can cause
somewhat of a tardy
problem for a busy student.
There is another
parking lot that is about 20
seconds away from campus
that is virtually unused
during the week . This lot is
the Saint Andrews Church
parking Jot. The church uses
the school lot on Sundays
for free. There seems to be '
no reason why the school
couldn't use the Saint
A.Nnws lot on school days.
If this was possible the
Newpon Harbor parkina
pro~lem would be
eliminated.

One of the ways that wachcrs
disci pline students at Newport Harbor
High is by giving them a ref c.rral.
A referral is a written
statement of what happened in Lhc
classroom that the teacher felt was
inappropriate. Usually &he student is
sent immediately to the office to see

Referrals are given at the

punishmenL Usually the most referrals
that are sent to the office in one day are
six.
Some days &here arc moro
and olher days lhcre are none. Many
students at Harbor; make it through all
four years without ever getting a
referral. Some students arc in the
office once a week.
Some teachers give referrals

and being disrespcctf ul to oLhcrs.
Prorobly the most common referral is
disrupting the classroom. M~t often,
the punishment is to serve a detention.
De&.cntion ranges from one hour to
seven hours. If Lhc student fails Lo
serve their dec.enlion for any reason he
or she can be suspended.
This problem used to be
handrea by sending tile student to
Saturday School, but since lherc no
longer is Saturday School, the student
is now suspended from school. Some
teachers choose to use referrals more
of&.cn than Others. Some choose to do
their own punishments in the classroom
or before or aner school.
lf a student g~ too many
referrals he or she can be suspended.
Referrals can be prevented by
following the rules and showing
