SANTA ANA -Jurors pressed into a
second dny of deliberations Thursday,
debating whether Dr. Thomas Gionis
mas1enninded a 1988 attack on his ex-wife
Aissa Wayne and her then·boyfriend,
Newporl Beach financier Roger Luby.
After two weeks of testimony, jurors began
deliberations late Wednesday in the assault
and conspiracy case against Gionis, a
.3.8-year-old orthopedic surgeon and Pomona
resident.
Nearly four years ago, t\\O armed men
followed Wayne -actor John Wayne's
eldest daughter -and Luby into the garage
of Luby's gated 22nd Street home as the
couple returned from a morning \\Orkout.
The men handcuffed the couple, smashed.
their faces into the concrete f'loor,
pistol-whipped Luby and tried to slice his
Achilles' tendon. ·
Gionis and Wayne were embroiled in a
biller custody bat1Je over their daughter at
the time. Prosecutors allege Gionis paid Gal
about $40,000 to hire the two thugs.
Out the defense argues that Gionis wa
winning the custody case so had no reason to
order such an attack. while Luby's debts and
legal \\OCS set him up as a prime t:irget for
an a5 auh by 01he(S.
Gionis' first trial on charges of conspiracy
and assault ended in a hung jury in
Dccember·l 990.
During the trial, the prosecution painted
Gionis as a violently vengeful man and
Wayne ali a "decent human being" who was
victimized yet continued a friendship "i1h
her ex-husband for the liake of their child.
nut colorful defense auorney Druce
Cutler, belit kno\\n for representing New
York mob boss John Cotti, insbted the
circumst:intial evidence failli to prO\e Gionb
was behind the Oct. 3 beatings.
Cutler con1 ended the phone and financial
records don't i.how illegal activity liince Gal
was hired legitimately during the custody
ballle to conduct surveillance on Wayne to
gather proof that she was an unfit mother.
He characteriLcd Gionis as a h.1rdworking,
affectionate man who h:id a deep love, not
an obscs ion, for his daughter and \\Orricd
that his frivolous ex-wife was neglecting the

Most of the suns that will be usod tomorrow are
fairly uansponable -miniature replicas or rail-

fire at South Shore and Bahia Corinthian.
Gil's a member of both dubs. and he'll be bring·
in& his cannon in by truck. Given his druthers, I'm
sure Gil would like to hook the beast to a caisson
pulled by two snonin& horses.
Gil's new tot took him three months of 40-hour
weeks to build at his shop on 17th St. His is a .6 to

adaplcd ror 10 puge shotgun shells.

broke even faster than it did. Gil
Knudson cuts no corners.
The barrel is cast iron, covered
whh ll sheen of 20 coats or jet·

The many-spoked wheels -the
only parts Gil didn't build from scratch · arc anti-
ques found in a shop in Maricopa. Gil took them to
one of the custom auto painters near his Moonlite
Marine workshops and had them carefully sprayed.
"1988 Mercedes ivory," Gil says. "Then I had Smit-
ty -you know Smitty, the guy who paints boat
names? -I had him come up and do the.pin-striping
on each spoke. Doesn't that look great!"
I admitted, ngain, that it certainly ~id. Indeed,
this new one is the crowning achievement of Gil
Knudson's cannon-building C3reer. "I guess I've

Hood originally faced the
death penalty but prosecu-

charged with first-degree

There has been specula-

Hood is somehow connected
to his wife's murder and
prosecutors have been inves-
tigating· whether he col-

During Hood's prelimi·

contend the evidence is

NEWPORT BEACH -
County heahh offici:ils warn
seafood lovers that the an-
nual mussel quarantine is
currently in effect for an in-
definite period, meaning
mussels from local waters
should not be eaten because
of the threat o( poisoning.
The entire California
coastline, including bays and
inJets, is included in the
quarantine, which is aimed
to protect the public from
the deadly poisons that may
be present in mussels,
clams, oysters and scallops.
Between 1927 and 1991, 521
cases of paralytic shellfish
poisoning -including 32
deaths -were recorded in
the state.
The seasonal quarantine
was extended indefinitely in
November as a precaution
after a second toxin, domoic
acid, was detected for the
first time on the Pacific
coast.
Mussels pose the greatest
hazard because they develop
high levels of toxin more
quickly than other mollusks
and are eaten whole, with·

T he 14th annual Newport Cannery

Canoe Club, will be held this Saturday.
The event will start at 8 a.m. in th~
bay at 18th Street on Newport Beach's
B:ilboa Peninsula .
A field of about 30 men's teams and
approximately 25 women's teams is ex-

tion.
The start of the women's novice race
at 8 a.m. kicks off the competition with
the men's novice event slated for 8:30.
The novices' course is a 3-mile sprint
around Lido Isle. -
The beginning or the women's race
is slated for 8:45 a.m. The women's
course is 9 miles, as the competitors
will head for just offshore the Balboa
Pier, then come back. ,
The first women•s fin ishers are ex·
peeled at around 10 a.m.
The start of the men's race is slated
for 10:45 a.m. The men's course, which
heads for just offshore Newport Pier
and back, is about 12 miles, and the
approximate first finish for the men is

Since this is an ocean-going race,
good viewing point s include the jetty as

~ All-inclusive vacations keep you from wonying about money matters
8y Rick Mcintee
H ~ve you grown tired of

while on vac.ationl All-
inclusive vac.ations, which range
from $1 ,300 ~o $1 ,600 per week,

even leave home.
An example· is Club Med which
was the first to develop the ·
concept, and today it has 36
villages worldwide. One price
includes travel arrangements,
meals, most sports and all tips
and gratuities. Club Med has
villages for singles, couples, and
families. A few of the locations
have supervised day and night
activities for children.
Jamaic.a Sa.ndals has six
all-inclusive resorts for "couples
only." Its conceP,t is "leave your
wanet at home. I Prices include
all travel, sports, food, drinks and
tips. The dub has three resorts in

A popular all-inclusive resort for
both couples and singles is

resort has·a variety of water and
beach sports, a place to do it all,
or simply do nothing at all. Two
