NEWPORT HARBOR -Charlotte Dale
is living evidence of the theory that "any
publicity 1 good publicity, as long as they
pell your name right"
Dale had her proverbial JS minutes of
fame last month, \\-hen Villa Nova, her nearly
~ix-decodes-old re taurant, filed for bank·
ruptcy protection from creditors. The bsnk-
ruptcy was widely reported in area neW)pa-
pcrs, including. The Daily Pilot. and though.
such financial crisi made for bad news, 1he
publicity caused many Villa Nova fans to
show their supporl by dining at the bayfront
restaurant
Dale said business has been up signifi-
cantly at Villa Nova in the six weeks since
the bankruptcy action wa filed . She declined
to quantify the sales increase. but said the
1mprovemen1 came as welcome rel ief after
the recession and Pe~ian Gulf War cau ed
Villa No .. a's sales to drop by 12 percent in
1991.
"Our business is going Blong very well,"
Dale ~aid Mondo). "We've been really busy,
and l\e ccn a lot of faces I hadn't een in a
while. The waiters are all happy, so I know
we 're doing nicely."
Prior to the bankruptcy action, Dale said
she fretted that news of the filing would
scare some cu tomers away. Instead, ~he
aid, old friends wrote letters of support or
came in to dine. She added that she hopes
the restaurant can sustain and build on the
improved sales by c;reatina positive cxperi·
cnces for customers and ge nerating repeat
business.
Villa Nova's banquet bu incss has been
particularly strong, Dale aid. The re taurnnt
i~ completely booked for banquets through
the end of May.

COSTA MESA -Using
nothing more than a magnifying
gloss, pieces or old wood and
the bnght sun that floods the
patio of his Costa Mesa home,
Michael Hofer is able .to create
what might be considered
quintessential environmental art.
By, channeling rays of sunlight
through his magnifying glass,
Hofer uses the heat to burn
scenes, sayings and other sym-
bols on pieces of wood he col·
lccts everywhere from beaches
and forests to littered lots.
"It's all about cleaning up the
environment and using
alternative energy," Hofer said.
"This doesn't cost me anything."
While it may sound like an
old Boy Scouts trick, Hofer's
unusual form of solar art has
been catching on since he
started drawing the names of his
friends and family on grape
stakes about a year ago.
"People started ordering from
me," said Hofer, a professional
house painter. "Soon I got real
good with it. I sec some1hing
there that nobody else can see."
Hof er said he especially likes
to work on old, weathered
pieces of wood, many which he

School terms
Under the aulse of
monetary savings, the
Newport-Mesa 'Unified
School District trustees
extended their own terms by
one year. Voter's elected
these officials to serve four
years. Who do they think
they arc to extend their own
term limits?
· Tbis issue is for the voters
to decide. Could you
imagine senators extending
their own terms to avoid an
election campaign with the
excuse that it saves us
money?
Perhaps it in time to take
the "Newport" out of
Newport-Mesa Unified
School District. Newport
Beach taxpayers actually
subsidize Costa Mesa
students and the school
board's mismanagement.
In approximate numbers,
Newport raises $35,000,000
for the district. Costa Mesa
and all other tax sources
misc only about $23,000,000.
Yet, Newport only has
about 6,000 students while
Costa Mesa rcprc ents
about 10,000 students.
Simply put, Newport
Beach raises about SS,800
per year per student. while
Costa Mc a only raises
about $2,300 per year per
student. The fact is.
Newport Beach raises 2.5
times more money per
student than Costa Me~a.
but Newport's money 1s
shared equally amongst all
~tudents.
I hope with the vote the
board took, their improper
handling or Coastline
Colleae and with the clo ing
of the much needed
Eastbluff School as an
elementary school, that
Newport residents consider
a "Newport" school district
o.! ill own..

Perot
prediction
On Nov. J, 1992 President
Bush, deserving or not.
should win 48 to 50 state
with 40 to 60 percent of the
vote. Independent candidate
Ross Perot and the
Democrat nominee. likely
Clinton, will split the
remaining vote.
Since Republic:ins arc
more loyal, Perot will draw
off more Democratic than
Republican voters on
abortion, gun control.
anti-Gulf War,
anti-incumbency, and his
eccentric personality. Thus,
the G.O.P. should aain at
least 40 House and S Senate
seats. So, rather than sweat
or knock Perot, the GOP
should hope he gets on the
ballot or all SO state .
tf so and with the
economy improving, the
nation and the GOP will be
in good shape if George
Bush reliably "stands for
something" like a ''vision
thing" of strong conservative
w lues and real fiscal
reform. Surely, the
Democrats would be better
off by nominntina Perot for
President.

Constructive criticism ,can be healthy , but picking off sides neve r is
I n the past two "'eeks, we
have received dozens of
letters ilnd calls regarding the
Newport Beach Police
Department .
And, not surprisingly. the
majority of tho c who have taken
time to vent their feeling have
had only glowing, positive
comments on the police.
We feel good about that and
the police sl'lould, too.
This has been a rough :ind
trying month for tho c in law
enforcement, a period when
emotions and frustration have
collided head-on with rationnl
thinking and civilized behavior.
Although the nots in Los
Angeles may have i.cemcd like
di~tan1 thunder to some, the
impact was felt by police officers
everywhere, and not only tho)e
who were called up to help a sist
in quelling the violence.
We point thb out because of a

Dealership, neighbors
asked to make a deal
By Anna Cekola
Slatl Wlllef
COSTA MESA -The City
Council gave Nabers Buick and
Cadillac and neighboring
residents another two weeks
Monday to try and resolve
noise and privacy issues
involving a roof ·top parking lot
at the dealership.
In response to complaints
from neighbors, the Planning
Commission on April 30
imposed several new restriction
on the dealership. Dealer
owner Dick Nabers said the
proposed reMrictions would
"seriously restrict our ability to
effectively conduct business" in
his written appeal to the City
Council.
Among the proposed
conditions contesiCd by Nabers:
• Prohibit customers from
looking at cars stored on a
roof-top parlcing area.
Neighbors say customers and
employees arc const:intly
looking into their b.id.yarch.
Nabers said such a restriction
would hurt "sales and W'<
dollars for the Cll) "
• Remo'e a public addn.~.,.,
system for the Bu1d. '>ho'' room
Auto official-. say th9 \e u,eJ
the same PA S\~tcm for :!5
years. although residents say
the system was not used for at
least one year.
This is not the first time the
dealership ha~ run into
problems with 11s residential
neighbors. Since 1970. Nabers
has been fighting with Collcl!c
Park neighbors over expansion
plans, although a compromise
was reached in 1988.
ln other council action:
•Council gadfly Sid Soffer
and his Bernard Street rental
property "ere once again the
subject of debate, "llh the
council turning down his
request to submit building
plans under old $C ncral plan
guidelines.
On March 16, planning
officials turned down blueprints
Soffer had submitted to legalize
four rental units on the
property, saying his application
was incomplete. (1-fe had failed
to provide the mailing labels
and identification of
neighboring property owners
who are entitled to notice
about any changes at the
home.) But Soffer argued the
planners made their decision
based on a policy, not an
offfcial city lAw, and his plans
should be accepted.
City Attorney Thomas Kathe,
however, said bu ilding officials
do have the aulhority under a
state government code to reject
incomplete applica tions.
As it turned out, March 16
was rhc las t date Soffer could
submjt plans under the old
general plan standards. With
the new general pla n, Soffer
can only apply for 1hree.
ins1ead of four, rental unit:. on
the property.
Soffer h.is been sentenced to
M\ months an county jail for
Carling to bring the properry up
to cit; code, including the lack
of proper permits to use the
property's garage, playroom
and two backyard trailers as
rental units. His sentence has
been postponed pending the
result of two appeals.

with varsity
M atching the varsity's record and finish in the Sea
View league, the Corona del Mar High junior
varsity baseball team completed the season last
week with a 7-8 mark and tied for third place.
And like the varsity, the Sea Kings' JV won two of
three games against the team it finished tied with -
Saddleback.
"I told the guys that if we had CIF playoffs, we 'd be
going as a third-place team," said CdM JV Coach Paul
Del Pizzo. "I predicted at the start of the year that we'd
be in the top three.
"We had a lot of close games this year, and there were
about five more games we could have won. I think we
should have finished a strong second in league."
The season ended on a down note fo r Corona after it
lost its finale against University, 3-2, missing a chance to
finish alone in third place.
The Sea View League JV standings ended like
this: Tustin, 12-3; Woodbridge, 9-6; CdM and
Saddleback, 7-8; University, 6-9; and Newport
Harbor, 4-11.
"We beat Woodbridge (the second-place team)
two out of three, but we lost a few games we
should have won," said Del Pizzo. "What hurt us
all season was our defensive play. Too many
errors hurt us. There wasn't a game this season in
which we did not make at least one error."
Offense certainly wasn't a problem for CdM
this season. First baseman Greg German hit .462
anJ outfielder Mike Zoelle finished with a .423
average to head a long list of Sea Kings with
productive batting averages at the end of the
season.

Other key h1t1ers included designated hitter Jim
llu~ton (.3~). ~ccond baseman Jay Joyer (.3~).
outfielder J.J DiCesare (.313), third baseman/outfielder
John McDonald (.304) and third baseman/pitcher Chris
Bo"'man (.302). As a team, the Sea Kings hit a robust
.30~.·
"Our catcher, Chris Taylor, was an ironman this year,"
said Del Pizzo. "Against Uni, in the second-to-last game
of the season, he took a shot in pregame to his nose
(knocking it out of joint). Later that night, it was OK and
we asked him about it. He said he had fixed it himself.
"He's been banged up all season. but he's caught every
game and hit two homers for us."
Leadoff hitter Eric Olsen hit .298. and acted as a
catalyst to the offense, contributing 14 walks, eight stolen
ba~es and 15 runs ~cored.
The Sea Kings relied primarily on three top pitchers.
who did a good JOb, according to their coach, but we(e

allowed this season. JU~t about half were unearned.

chance to start three games. Bowman finished with a 2-3

record a save this season.

The Nev. port Harbor junior varsity basebalJ squad
finished with a 4-11 Sea View League mark. but the
numbers don't tell the whole story, according to head
coach Steve Stewart.
"We improved leaps and bounds as far as our mental
play was concerned," said Stewart. "We cut down on our
mental errors. which an turned cleaned up our play in the
field."
Stewart\ team was comprised of a frosh-soph un11 that
failed to win a game last !.Cason. And about m1d"'ay

he reached base. accounting for 20

"He'll he playing for the varsity
soon, and I thi nk he'll do a good job,"
said Stewart.
The leading hitter on the team by
ave rage was sophomore Dan Pickel,
who boasted about a .315 averaee.
Defensively, Pickel pitched and played
shortstop and second base.
Junior shortstop Tom Urbina was
another player who impressed Stewart
with his improvement. "Tom started

Go for boat rides -sec what
)OU like. 1 know sailor~ who get
easick on powerboats, and
powerboatcrs who are bored to

of choices: harbor cruises. rentab.

If )OU decided to get into
boating, con$idcr joining a club
~hich reflects your interc~ts. This
is an excellent way to amplify )Our
boating pleasure. You'll make new
friends and be encouraged to
participate in their boating
activities anJ social functions.
1f you have children you wish to
enjoy boating also, a yacht club mcmb~rship may be de:;lruble.
Some clubs offer excellent yout)l

Now is a good time to consider

currently very attractive and slips
are not as scare as in the past.
