Mucha Milnchies Inc. files flir b_.nkruptcy
~ Local Mexican restaurant chain was owner Alex Lovera's bid

NEWPORT BEACH Mucho
Munchies Inc. -a small chain of Mexi-
can restaurants founded by a Corona del
Mar man who was trying to rebuild his
restaurant career after a 1985 cocaine
conviction -has filed for Chapter 7
bankruptcy protection from creditors.
Chapter 7 bankruptcies typically entail
liquidation of a company's assets, ratller
than a reorganization that would allow
the petitioner to get debts under control
and attempt to stay in business.
Mucho Munchies, owned by Alejandro
"Alex" Lovera, Joann Lovera and Lee
Parker, has built a small chain of fast·
food eateries over the last several years,
including locations in Costa Mesa, New-
port Center and Corona del Mar. The
chajn's Laguna Beach location was sold
last year, and its former restaurant on
Newport Boulevard is no longer open.
There was also a variation of Mucho
Munchies, the Mucho Munchies Rock'n
Cantina, located in an unincorporated
section of Irvine Ave nue. Alex Lovera
said the Mucho Munchies Rock'n Can-
tina, a sit-down restaurant that ~enc)
beer, is owned by his wife Joann and
Parker. Alex Lovera said he is not an
o" ner of that re:.taurant because he is
unable to get a liquor licen'e due to his
pa:.t felony conviction on f edcral coc:une
charges.

member of the House so he couldn't
have bounced any checks on its bank.
And politicians can't understand why
they don't get no respect.
Speaking of which, how 'bout that Dan
Quayle? Whatta guy! Acx:ordi~g to one poll, 62 percent
agree with his vilification of Murphy
Brown for being an unwed mother (and
it's probably higher than that among
Pilot readen).
But did Quayle or anybody else think
this thing through? The kid's father is
Murphy's ex-husband. They were going ·
to remarry, but the guy finked out.
That left th.is relatively celibate,
intelligent, professional woman with only
two choices: Have the baby, or have an
abortion.
0 bviously, if Quayle says Murphy
shouldn't have had her baby, then
she should have ... But he won't permit
that either, so she ... Just what should
he have done, Dan?
Yeah. I know, Dan. But for a healthy
4()..something woman, don't you think
that's kind of ridiculous?
0 nJE GOOD GUYS: Somewhere
around here there is a secret school
where some people who own or work in
local shops and restaurants go for
graduate work in rudeness and
indifference.
They are a minority group, thank
goodness, but a highly visible one. Than
why it's so delightful to find people who
really go out of their way to be helpful.
Consider this: It was dinner time, and
we were out of dog food! One of our
mutts has been ailing, so it wouldn't be
real good to change chow on him. So I
went to the nearest place I could get a
sack of that delicious Science Diet
Canine Maintenance.
But Pct Care Company only had
40-pound bags of the stuff. I would have
to park my car on tbc street to tore that
much dog food. Then a chap I took to
be the manager instructed the clerk to
open the 40-pounder and 1M: me
enough food for several days, when they
would have a shipment of smaller bags.
T he guy turned 'out to be Lee Heim,
marketing director of the Pet Ca.re
Company chatn amJ. he, and his
company, have a new fan.
From Pct Care, I drove to the post
office to drop off some mail. lt was
collection time at the drive-through
boxes and I hadn't yet pre-sorted tbe big
stack of bills I had sweated over all day.
·~n't worry," Jasper-Brown smiled,
''I'll check them for you and make sure
they get to the right place You JUSt go
on and have yourself a great evening:•
Thanks to Lee and Jasper, J surely
did.

rates have declined sharply over the last
two years. O ne or the most recent exam-
ples: The 4100 Newport Place office
building, which might have sold fo r $40
million a few years ago and was in escrow
to sell for $19.5 million last year, sold
earlier this year for $13.7 million.
The market is gelling better for
brokers, as sales and leasing activity in
Newport Beach and Costa Mesa has been
on the up~wing over the last several
months. In April, local brokerages sur-
veyed monthly for The Daily Pilot Eco-

the sixth straight month in which mem-
bers of the survey group posted impro,ed
sales, on average, over year-ago levels.
Property owners, meanwh ile, continue
to suffer effects of the recession, over-
building and reduced credit availability.
• Repres~nts last year's performance. A score above
100 reflects an improvement over the same month the
previous year, while a score below 100 indicates a de-
cline. Scoring is based on sales of local real estate bro-
kerages that arc surveyed regularly for this feature.
"I think it's something in the stock
market they call a market adjustment."
said a brokerage owner in the survey group. "In real
estate, they call it a disaster."
While most local real estate expert:. predict that it
will take two years or more for property val ues and
rental rates to rebound, there are some posit ive
indications for real estate owners. For example, one
respondent said that unlike real estate slumps exper-
ienced previously in some markets, such a Dallas
and Denver, the local downturn at least has bu)•ers
who will purchase properties, albeit at bargain prices.
He said, too, that local property owners have finally
come to terms with how far values have slipped,
opening the door for more deals to take place.
"The good thing is, everyone seems lo have
one
adapted to the m::irl.ctplace we're in," he said. "Last
year, there was a lot of denial, which created a huge
disparity between "hat the sellers were a~king and
what the market was willing to bear."
Another survey re-.pondcnt said he had seen a
reduction in what he called "buyer lethargy" -an
indccis1,cness among pro!.pective bu)cr~ ;and tcnJnts
that slowed the pace of real estate transactions. .

----COSTA MESA l'vour Locally City nn111zes Hoag expansion plan STATIONERS, INc l Owned Stationers
~ However, the hospital's
master plan still needs to
get approval from state
Coastal Commission.
By Iris Yokot

NEWPORT BEACH -Hoag
Hospital's controversial plans to
nearly triple in size over 20 years
were adopted into city law Mon-
day night by the City Council.
As it did in its preliminary ap-
proval two weeks ago, the council
essentially approved the hospital
expansion as proposed, adding
only a few restrictions on building
setbacks and heights that disap·
pointed neighbors said weren't
enough to prevent overdevelop-
ment.
the Santa Ana River or in other
West Ne~port sites to make up
for building over the marsh. The
council upportcd this wetlands
plan.
The council approval also in-
cluded the following conditions:
• Buildings on the lower cam-
pus, near the existing cancer cen-
ter, can be built to three stories
high as propo ed, but the height
of the front of the buildings must
be dropped three feel;
• The critical-care surgery area
can be expanded on the west side
of the upper campus but mu t be
at least 54 feet away from the
nearest Villa Balbo:i condo-
minium;
noi)e and hazardous g~s on the
property.
The dissatisfied neighbor), how·
ever, countered by hiring their
own architect to draft an alterna-
tive plan that would move 50 per-
cent of the phinned lower-campus
construction to the upper campus.
Proponents contended this
wou ld protect the wetlands and
views from the blufftop bicycle
path, prevent noise and traffic pol-
lution along busy Coast Highway
and save the hospital at least $6.5
million.
But Hoag officials argued tha t
this density-shift plan would cram
too much onto the upper campus,
causing construction and traffic
problems that would add at least
$55 million to costs, which would
ultimately be passed on to pa-
tients.

go-ahead from the state Coastal
Commission, which is expected to
review the plan in late summer at
the earliest.

the highway right-of-way along
Newport Boulevard. Any money
left over will go toward extending
a reclaimed water line from Hun-
tington Beach to West Newport;
proponents of the alternative plan, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ said Monday that he and fellow ~
Hoag officials spent three years
on the expansion plans, which hos-
pital executives and their many
supporters insist arc necessary to
handle the community's growing
health care need~.
Council members and Hoag of.
ficials alike contend hospital plan-
-ners made plenty of changes over
the past three years in response to
community concerns.
Neighboring homeowners and
environmentalists, however, fear
the plans arc too grandiose and
repeatedly asl..ed for lower build·
ing heights and preservation of a
three-acre wetlands area on the
lower campus.

The ticket itself has even changed from a

held in the banquet room al the bowling

Prom is a major part of high school and

• From Jacobs:
l) Judge Anderson is an ex-public defender
who "spent eight years defending robbers, mur·
derers and rapists." Anderson's response: it's
true. That was her job before winning election
(against an incumbent) to the bench, where she
claims to be the "h:irdcst working judge in Or·
ange County."
2) Debra Allen has only 7 years of legal
practice with "ONLY 2 civil trials." AJlen's re-
sponse: False. She's tried many more than two
civil cases. In fact, she i;ays she's had at lcnst
10 civil judgments as a lawyer, and tried dozens
of civil cases and traffic cases as judge pro tern.
2) As for Allen's qualifications: "Jn about 10
years, Debra will have the experience to try for
judge hip again. She needs more criminal expc·
ricncc and a better undc~tanding of the court
system." AJlcn's response: Her forte, civil liti-
gation, is a vital component of the Harbor
Coun. And her legal work, including her cur·
rent position as judge pro tern, has given her
an adequate criminal law background.
•From Allen: "1 have more criminal expe·
rience than my opponents have civil expe-
rience."
And both Allen and Jacobs have continually
anacked Anderson for misleading voters into
thinking she's the incumbent judge - a charge
she continwilly denies.

Harbor's
Gan era
winds up
this week
~The core of Sailors' game ,
whatever success they have,
revolves around th is 'setter.
T his week marks the / end of an era for
Newport Harbor High School and the
Gan family.
Newport tfarbor's Sailors play Santa Barbara
tonight at Corona dcl Mar, starting at 7:30. If
they pull it off, their high school season will end
on Saturday at Cerritos College in the CIF 4-A
finals.
When Russ Gan sets for the Sailors tonight
(and hopefully Saturday), he will finish an era
in Orange County volleyball that has spanned
eight years.
Russell Can guides Newport Harbor into tonight's CIF 4-A semifinals against Santa Barbara. It starts at 7:30 at Corona del Mar High School.
four Gan family members, at least three CIF
championship game • and most importantly. a
relationship with a family that epitomizes what
· a "team" is all about.
Dr. Gan is always there to help
wherever he can. His sense of
humor is a trademark that is per-
petuated throughout his children.
He attend all the games, but usually
becomes very nervous and has 10

Anna Gan is a very special
woman. She keeps it all in the right
pe~pective and understands how
compclitivc the family and the sport
is. "Chana" is the Hawaiian word
for family and a key to the Gan cha·
rismo.
Darryl was 1he first Gan to play at
Newport. He was pan or lhe 1986

the club team while at USC. Darryl, while
working on hi real estate license, aJways finds
the time to coach ony youth volleyball team

Darryl in clinics, junior high team , or while
competing for either the Ornnge County Vol-

IR VINE -Baseball, men's

At a press conference held at

wi th the fina l decision to cut the

"Duke to the magnitude of the

Ford 'tated.
A projected $319,000 deficit in
this )Car's athletics budget and an
anticipated minimum 10 percent
reduction for all non-degree grant·

early," said Ickes. "David Knuff
got us going (with the first two-run
shot). That was a good curve the
ball the kid threw and he hit it out
of the park. Our offense is real
contagious."
Mike McDonald went six shut-
out innings to get the victory, his
eighth without defeat. He struck
out •ix. walked t-wo and allowed
low billo inch&diaa a . pair of dou·
blea by Riverside Poly catchct
Howard Newman.
Wieldina heavy bats for Mater:
Dci on Tuesday were Caner (3 for
3 with 4 runs scored), Blanton (l
for 3 with 3 runs scpred), Mut·
theWM>n (3 for 3 with 2 runs and 2
RBI) and Knuff (2 for 3 with 2
runs, 3 RDJ).
So the Monarchs (23-4) have
ripped two orponents by a com-
bined score o 24·0 in the playoffs
(Marina fell Inst week, 10-), but
lcke said complacency wiJI not be
a pitfall on Friday.
"We've won six or seven close
games in the last or next to last at-
bat," said Ickes'. "That won't be a
problem. And, not with El Do-
rado. It won't take anything to get
up for them. Knowing how good
they arc and about their program
keeps our kids focused."
Rich Silva, a right-hander with a
9-1 record, wi~I get the nod on Fri-
day.
