Denise Huber
A family's
-yearlong
nightmare
~ Parents of Denise
Huber still hope for a
miracle one year after
her disappearance.
By LoriAnn Basheda
SWf Writer
COST A MESA -It was
a year ago tonight that lone A
and Dennis Huber realized
something had lrnppened to
their 23-year-old daughter,
Denise.
Tire UCI graduate was
last seen heading to her
home in Eastbluff after
dropping a friend off at his
house in Huntington Beach
about 2 a.m. June 3
following n concert and l:ue
dinner.
When lone Huber awoke
that morning, she went to
work with little concern.
thinking her only daughter
probably spent the night
with a friend.
Panic set in, however,
when she returned from
work that afternoon to find
th:ll there was no message
from her daughter.
Worried sick, lone Huber
and her husband began
calling friends, police,
hospitnls. Finally, at 10 p.m.,
Denise's friend phoned the
Hubers: She had found
Denise's car on the Corona
del Mar Freeway just south
of the Bear Street eAit. The
tire was blown. Denise was
gone.
The Hubers ru shed to the
freeway to sec for
themselves.
"And that's when we
realized something horrible
had happened," lone Huber
said.
After seeing the car,
Huber and her husband
headed to ,the police
depnqment to file n police
report. Then they went
home to wait.
"The first few days I f cit
like I had been kicked in
the stomach,'' she said. "It
was in knots. I couldn't cat
for two to three days. I still
get sick sometimes.''
And she's still waiting.
"The chances of her
coming back arc less and
less all the time," she said.
"When a year rolls by yo-u
realize it's probably not
going to hnppen. But we're
still hoping for that miracle.
I'm not ready to give up."
Today, nt the corner of
Bear and Bristol streets
near where Denise Huber
disappeared, Costa Mesa
police will hold a press

George Bush cruised, Bill Clinton ducked
and dodged, Tom Campbell and Bruce Her-
schensohn wrestled an~ two women made
history in California's voter-sl3rved primary
Tuesday night.
Democrats Barbara Boxer and Dianne
Feinstein fulfilled the pre-election prediction
that voters hungry for change would turn 10
women and raised the prospect that Califor-
nia could be on the brink of sending two
women to Washington.
"Californians have spoken loudly and
clearly and sent the whole nation a message:
The status quo mus1 go," Feinstein said.
Likewise, incumbent Sen. John Seymour
trampled all over conserv:.itive William Dan-
neymeycr, who ran on a family values ticket.
Seymour, appointed to complete Pete Wil-
son's 1erm two years :.igo, will face Feinstein
in November.

Political observers had predicted the state's
boiling anti-incumbency mood would set the
tempo for the night, but instead the evening
brought little more than general disinterest.
One report indicated that the voter turnout
was t~e w~rst i~Cilliforni~ in half a cenlUry.
While Boxer slipped past Lieutenanl Gov-

Whether they were pro-education, nnti-

Newport Beach/Costa Meaa Oalty Pilot Wednesday, June 3, 1992 A3 ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~o~
News of parting slightly exaggerated
A las, I am not going on to fame and fortune
ot the Los Angeles Times. And, no, I
haven't the faintest idea how what
happened in Saturday's paper happened.
Dut there it was: My dreadful photograph, my
byline, the headline, "A fond
farewell to a warm-hearted city"
and a sentimental column about
leaving the Pilot for a nameless
newspaper on Sunflower.
The Times has its Orange
County editorial offices and
printing plant on Sunflower, ergo
the Fred Column was going to
the Times. What splendid news!
But while I would certainly be
pleased to discuss the idea, I
don't see me going to the Times
as a realistic possibility.
For the past several years, the
Times has been youthenizing its
columnists of, shall we say, more
experience. The chances of them hiring an elderly
party are something less than slim and none.
Out it wa s nice to tickle my fancy. I
On the
Coast
disappoint them.
What happened, ns you probably know by now,
is that Iris Yokoi, one of the Pilot's Newport
Deach reporters, was indeed leaving to join the
Times.
Thursday night there was the obligatory male
dancer surprise (this one masquerading as a
Newport Dench police officer) followed by the
official farewell luncheon on Friday.
h was a happy-sad thing. Everybody at the
paper is pleased that Iris is moving up in the
world, also sod she is leaving. Iris is that nice a
person and thnt good a reporter.
She wanted to say goodbye to Pilot readers, and
to the scores of people she dealt with in the
course of her work.
Managing Editor Steve Marble, fine fe llow that
he is, offered his usual Saturday column space.
It is unclear what happened from then on. Iris
and I are not exactly look-ali kes. Indeed, she is
one of the tiniest persons I know. I expect she
only underweighs me by about 130 pounds, but.I
have maybe a foot and a half on her.
Dut somehow, some way, somebody put my mug
and byline together with
started Saturday by reading LoriAnn
Oasheda's l>plendid piece on the
dreadful conditions at some local
nursing homes. Then J turped to page 3
to rea~ Steve Marble's column.
Hmmm, I hmmmed. That's not Steve
Ma rble there in the little picture, that's
me! I guessed that, for some reason,
the paper was running the column I
'Hey, pop! What's
going on? How come
you didn 'r tell me you're
going to the Times?'
Iris's farewell message.
After I was able to aceepl
the fact that I really

A Cter bat11ing for many months
to wriggle free from the
clutches of the recession, Newport
Dcach and Costa Mesa retailers in
April finally showed a significant
increase in sales over year-ngo
levels.
Retailers surveyed monthly for
The Daily Pilot Economic Index
achil:ved a 12 percent increase, on
average, over April 199 1-salcs lev-
els. Sales of the survey group had
hm ered near even, on average,
"ith year-ago numbers for about
four months. That period of flat
~ales was preceded by months of
sharply reduced revenues.
Reta II }
'·Things are starting to turn a-
round," said one store owner in the
s.urvcy group. "Last year was our
worst year ever. The brakes were
screeching. Dut this year is belier."
This merchant said he believes
his store can sustain and improve
on its successes in recent weeks.
• R~presents last year's performance. A score
above 100 reflect$ an improvement over the s.1me
month the previous ye.lf, while a score below 100
indic,1tes a decline. Scoring is based on s.1les of loc.1/
retailers who are surveyea regularly for this featurc.
"I'm quite optimistic," he said.
·•1 think things arc going to get
nothing but bc\tcr. ,I think things in the next few
months are going to get right bock in the swing of
things."
Not all of the respondents \\ere quite so
oj>timil>tic, but all reported seeing indications of
an improving local economy .
•·1 think it's a lilllc better," said one respondent.
"'l don't think the recession b over. but any time
the numbers ::ire better, there's reason for hope."
One member of the sur,ey group said his store's
recent sales imprpvc\11ents were largely
attributable to hisgun department, which
one
benefited grc;1tly from concern stirred by the Los
Angeles riots. On the other hand, he said he's
seen an jmprovemcnt in c.onsumcr confidence thn1
bolstered his store's sales acr9ss 1he b·oard.
Local merchants are also encouraged by the
ahead-of-schedule completion of the Costa Meso
Freeway extension. The project is now expected to
be completed in early J uly, possibly by the July 4
weekend. The free\\ ay extension ''as originally
scheduled to be completed in December.
The April index score for retail: 112.

C?nfercnce to say they aren't
either.
And Ione and Dennis will
join them to make a public plea
in hopes that someone,
somewhere has the compassion
to at least give police a clue as
to their daughter's
whereabouts.
"We know there's someone
out there who knows
something," she said. "Maybe
their conscience will get to
them."
Iont Huber also wants to tell
them how hard it is to face
each day without her daughter.
"She's constantly in the back
of my mind," Huber said. "Of
course I thin k and talk about
other things, but she's there all
the time. Everything else just
kind of filters through."
Huber describes her
daughter as com pa sionate,
sociable, pretty.
Tall and thin with long dark
hair and deep blue eyes, Huber
disappeared less than a yea r
after she was graduated from
UCI with a degree in social
sciences.
That's \\here she met her
best friend T:rn1m) Drown .
It wa s Oro" n, a Costa Mesa
resident, "ho founu I lube r's

"When I sa\\ 11 I !.t:.irted

snid ... Even then. though, I was
still thinking th.II ma)be Denise
was just sleeping."
Drown said it's too hard to
think about her friend, so she
tries not to d''ell on it.
.. Out I miss her," she said. "l

her about different things going

speaking of her daughter Denise
on. I still think she's the best
friend I ever had."
For lone and Dennis Huber
the reminders are a little more
real. A message on their
answering machine says they
will accept a collect call from
Denise Huber. And Denise's
room looks the same as the day
she disappeared.
"But I'm not ready to
remove her things yet," lone
Huber said. She also said she
feels she must stay in Newport
Dcach until he r daughter's
disa ppearance is resolved.
In the meantime, Ione Huber
has reluctantly returned to ,her
job as a substitute teacher. Her
husband -who started his
o" n business the day Denise

"ork.
They get support fro m God,
lone Huber said, and frie nds
and fam ily.
"I guess we just keep going
on in the same way have been
going on and hope and pray for
some answers."

ISSUES: Key concerns revelled through local eXlt poll
From A1
education and supporting ~fary Hornbuckle
in the 70th Assembly District race.
"l think she's great," Weise said. "I've
followed her career since before she was
mayor, and 1 appreciate her sympnthctic
stance toward the needy and her financial
positions.''
Weise said she favored the higher
education bond because she felt students at
that level need more assistance.
"That is when the wh eat is separated from
the charr so to speak," she said, "and I think
we should concentrate our efforts there."
Non-partisan voters also came out in the
primary to give their input on the proposals
and bond issues at stake.
"People may think they're free, but they're
not," said Sam Wray. "Someone has to pay
for it and unless it's a really good ~ause, I'm
not going to vote for it."
Wray, who walked with his dog to the St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church to cast his
ballot, said he supported the higher
education bond, but was against the
elementary school measure.
"It seems we have a lot of empty
eleme ntary schools an d 1 think we have to
take care of that fir~t before we give more
money out," he said.
At TeWinklc Middle School in Costa
Mesa, Republican Brian Dodson said he was
backing Gil Ferguson in the state Asse mbly
race. •
"I usually voted for the incumbent if 1
didn't hear anything bad about them,"
Dodson said. "l don't like Hornbuckle.
There was just something about her that
turned me off."
Dodson said he also supported President
Bush, resisting the recent wave of support fo r
undeclared candidate Ross Perot.
"It takes more than being a businessman
to run the country," Dodson said.
But at Estancia High School, Mike
O'Brien was one of the many Perot backers
at the polls today. He said he wrote in Perot
as a warning to Bush.
"I wanted to challenge. Bush," O'Brien
said. "I may vo te for Perot in November, but
it all depends on what happens."
Like many voters, Republican John
Vozenilek said his main concern this election
was education issues.
"I have three kids," he said, "and l think
education is the most important issue. I
voted for Hornbuckle because I thought she
was more pro-education."
At the polling booths at Orange Coast
College District orfices, Rick Otis said he
wanted Margaret Anderson to win the
Harbor Court race.
"l never heard anything bad about ~er and
she has a lot of experience," Otis .said.

McQuarrie, who was 70,

A memorial service for longtime Newport Bench rcsid~
ond writer Thomas Blandi will be c:c>9lcd ~at\lllday ~;Ling
at the Seafarers Lodge. ·
Mr. Dlandi, a retired accountant, died late last week. He
was 82.
An avid writer, Mr. Biondi wrote over 250 essays and--
fond of sharing copies or his own cookbook, "Ptomaine Tom's
Gourmet Secret" with friends. Cooking was n fa\lorite pastime.
He is survived by two daughters, Tetla Kulp or Manhattl'ln
Beach and Jackie Evans of Coronado; four grandchildren and
fou r brothers and si.sters.
Services will be held ot the 15th Street lodge at 11 a.m.
officer in the Korean conflict.
McQuarrie had launched an
escrow business, Southland
Investment Corp., in 1948, but
discovered that company had
deteriorated from a successrul
21-office operation to a
struggling, three-office outfit
when he returned from his Air
Force duty in 1952.
McQuarrie resumed his career
in real estate, and he and
McAlister met in 1956. Doth had
tried unsuccessfully to get a thrift
charter, but together, they were
able to establish Downey in
October 1957.
McQuarrie and Maurice L. McAlister
founded Downey Savings in 1957, and they
built its success not only on the traditional
thrift business of making home loans. but
also on development or neighborhood
shopping centers.
"We have lost a great friend and
colleague," McAlister said. "His devotion to
Downey over the past four decades greatly
contributed to the success of the insti tution
and to its position of prominence today."
Born in Minersville, Utah, and raised in
Compton, McQuarrie served two and a half
years as a Mormon missionary in Argemina.
He served four years in the Navy during
World War 11 and two years as an Air Force
McQuarrie is survived by his wife of 46
years, Neida Martin; his daughter, Sandra
Spencer, of Newport Beach; his sons, Brent
and Scott McQuarrie. both of Provo, Utah;
and eight grandchildren.
A f uncral service will be held at 11 a.m.
today at The Church of Jesus Christ of
Lauer-day Saints in Newport Beach,
followed by burial at Pacific View Memorial
Park and Mortuary in Corona del Mar.
In an announcement given to Downey
employees Mond ay, McAlister praised his
partner's contributions to the company.
The solution, Roeder said,
would probably require a mLx of

Getting
serious
in Junel
~That's the mood at CdM
where Sea Kings are primed
to forget 1991 football woes.
By Richard Dunn
°S9olts Wrbf
I n the springtime,
football has been
rather low-keyed at
Corona del Mar High,
but last autumn veteran ~
coach Dave Holland saw ·
some contents on the · ~
field he didn't like.
So things changed.
Going through a 2-6-2 season will do
that. ·
"It's more like Call practice....w~thout
the pads," said Holland, making his
early June appraisal of the program.
"We usually don't do much in the
spring except get ready for (summer)
passing leagues. We haven't done a lot
of fundamentals in the past, we've just
made it low-keyed. But this year, we're
spending a lot more li\Jle on fundamen-
tals.
"We're doing a lot of stuff to kind of
m<\ke it like a fall practice."
Last season, the Sea Kjngs were win-
less (0-4-1) in the tough Sea View
League, which is expected to be even
more unyielding this coming fall with
the additions of Santa Margarita· and Ir-
vine.
CdM, however, with its fundamentals
intact, along with eight returning start-
ers on defense and seven on offense,
feels primed to tum matters around.
"We're spending 40 minutes to an
hour every day just on individual funda-
mentals," said Holland, aruqous for the
school's new field house/wclgnt room t'O
be completed in July, courtesy of the
CdM Touchdown Oub.
Monthly will prc~ent an
all-star ~ift package while
Asics Tiger provides the Most
Outstanding Players of the
Game awards. •
Corona del Mar High's football team is .off and running during ongoing spring practice sessions.

"It wasn't quite enough," said Calvary Coach Dale
Walker of his team's two comeback attempts."They

field, we're alternating days with
the offense and defense."
CdM's final spring practice will
be June 12. It's first passing
league assignment is scheduled for
June 23 at home aga inst El Toro,
the first of nine this summer.
Largely because of the Newport/
Mesa School District's declining
enrollment, CdM reached an all·
time low of 54 pl:iyers out for
spring football. "We're a school
with 948 kids and this is the small·
est group we've hnd," Holland
said.
Of the 54, 24 will be sopho·
mores. ''{The district's enrollmen t)
'is supposed to creep up in a year,"
Holland said.
"ror right now, we just want to
give them a b:ise, so when we put
on the pads we don't have to go
through that again, so that by the
fall we'll be ready to go.
"We're going• to have a lot of
sophomores up on the varsity, and
as it looks now, we're going to
have a lot of sophomores who arc
going to be playing,"
Amon_g the rctuTning plnycrs for
the Sea Kings, junior Tom I less
and sophomore J.R. Walz were
All·Sca View League last fall.
Hess, 6·foOt·l, 190 pounds,
earned first 1eam all·league as a
running back, gaining 342 yards on
120 carries with six 1ouchdowns.
Hess, an all·purpose player, scored
a team·high 63 points, caugh1 26
passes for 255 yards, i.tarted al de·
fensive back occasionally, filled in
at quarterback once and did all of
CdM's kicking.
Walz, 5·9, 165, made second
team nll·league as a linebacker.
Holland has been impress~d
with Pasadena transfer John
Shimagin, a current junior who
plays defensive back and wide re·
ceivcr. "He's not real big, but he's
fast and strong," Holland said.
"He's one of our. strongest guys
~nd he only weighs about 160
pounds."
Holland is ub.o looking forward
to the emergence of Lindsey John·
son, a sophomore quarterback and
the younger brother of Warren
and Weston Johnson, both of
whom pl:iycd on CdM's 1988 and )
'89 CIF Dhision VI championship
teams.
Lind!lcy Joh nson, though, has
junior Malt Evans in front of him.
Evans, 5· 11 , J SO took over at
quarterback in the middle of last
season when senior star Todd Ke·
hrli went down "ith a dislocated
elbow <1~d started five games.
Evans completed 58 of 1 J J passes
( .522) for 5 J 0 yards and two
touchdpwns. Five times, however,
he was picked off.
The Sea Kings' offensive start·
crs returning include Evans, Hess,
t;ickle Gordy Clemons (6-2, ~10),
center Scott Dogdan (6·2, 205),
tight end Chris Quinn, wide re·
ccivcr Jeff Wegener and tackle
Den Sumner (6·0, 190).
Defensively. CdM will return
Walz. Clemons at tackle, Mike De
Re,ere (6·1, 210) at the other
tackle, Quinn at lincbad.er, Hess
at free :>afcl), Scott Hardesty at

Ev.eryone was amazed at how
skillfully Tommy handled the auc·
tion. ln effect, T ommy had opened
with a atrong two·hear1 bid and,
aJter North raised. started a cue·
bi dding sequence. When North
showed first-round diamond con·
trol, T ommy tried the Grand Slam
Force. asking partner to bid seven
hearts with two of tbe three top
trumps. N orth could not oblige.
Declarer won the opening club
lead and got matters off to a good
start by leading a trump to the king.
West's club discard brought out the
best in Tommy. H e ruffed a club,
cashed the three top pades and
crossed to the jack of diamonds t.o
ruff another club. The king and ace
of diamonds were cashed, setting
the scene for the final denouement.
Declarer led a club from dummy
and. down to only three trumps,
East had to ruff. T ommy under·
ruffed! N ow East was forced to lead
away from the queen of trumps into
declarer's combined ace· jack tent1ce.
