Perot reve aled that volunteer:. ha'e collected

As both a son and a dad, Father's Day worth remembering :.
A ftcr our grandson was born three
weeks, 18 hours and 27 minutes ago
as this is written -I did tell you
On the
Coast
about him, didn't 1? -1
asked the new aunt in
our family when she
w:rnted to go to Denver
and take her turn
kilchy-kooing the Trav.
This is a young woman
who has been waiting
patiently for years for
her sister to have a kid
so she could begin
procticing Auntie
Mamism. She said the
weekend or the 20th or
27th would be fine.
"Since Sunday the 21st
is Father's Day," daughter said, "I'll so
on the 27th."
How about that? The kid remembered
her poor ol' dad! 1 had completely
forgotten about Father's Day. 1 have
always maintained that Mother's and
Father's days were inventions or Mr.
Hallmark, Mr. FTD and the National
Association of Cravat Crafters.
When I mentioned in a column last
month that I gave my wife a new lawn
mower ror Mother's Day, some readers
were rather aghast. l thought it was a
pretty nice girt. The old mower wa s all
grungy and would hardly move. The new
one sparkles like polished silver and has
ball bearings on the wheels ond the
blades.
Pretty slick, I 'll say, and much nicer and
more costly than the weed picker I gave
her for Mother's Day 1981.
The last Father's Day l spent with my
dad was in J 983. He was at Hoag
Hospital, trying 10 recover from a s1rokc
he had suffered two weeks before.
That Sunday was one or the best days
he had in the four months that he lived
after the stroke hit him . Speech was
difficult, but he grinned and wished me a
happy Father's Day. Then he i.aid to be
sure not to forget about Mother's Day
and I said I would not. Then I leaned
down to give him a hug and a kiss.
Dad and I never made much of
Father's Day, but l never forgot to
observe it somehow. I always sent him a
card or something, even when I was away
in the Army or traveling and becoming
worldly.
I wa) ve ry glad or these little cffons
that June nine years ago.
My father was an orphan by the time he
was 4 years old and he was raised in the
Knights of Pythias home in Columbus,
Ohio. Father's Day - or even being a
father -was not something he knew
much about.
But he gave it his very best, and that is
aJI any of us can do.
We fathers are a strange 101. We may
pooh·pooh such hyped-up rituals as
Father's Day, but I suspect mO)t of us will
get plenty sul ky if we ure totally 1gnorcJ.
When asked what we want for Futhcr''i
Day we may mutter, ''Aw, nu111n' It's just
a big commercial trap, any\\ti)', M.,) dun \
worry about me."
Just don't take that too literally. We
may in fact mean we don't wi.Jnt anv g1f1'.

Good news to so~e can be devastating to others
T he most recent financial headlines
mean different things to different
people.
You could imagine smiles, for
example, on 1he faces of those wai1ing
for the refinance rates on their home
mongages, which could result in
significant savings.
On the other hand, you could just as
easily conjure up an image of an elderly
couple standing outside their financial
im.titution quizzically looking at each
other, having realized th e CD interest
rate they use for retirement income has
been slashed by 50 percent in the last
couple of years.
Meaning wha t? Meaning that
Market
Watch
Beckell's "Waiting for
Godot" may have more
in common with John
Q. Public's Waiting for
Perot than 50 percent
rate cuts have to do
with economic salvation
fo r all.
Truth is, or so it
seems from this corner
or the sky, that rate
relief can stimulate
dollar reallocation,
which in turn c.an begin
to move some
heretofore hideously stubborn
mountains. The bottom line is rates may
remain low, or plunge even lower, for
some time to come. Long enough, in
fact, so that professional and
institutional investment managers, and
buyers of corporate and government
bonds have begun to sh ift their emphasis
into intermediate and longer term
maturities. This should tell you
something. Now go register to vote.
Now for the week in review. The Dow
Jones Industrial Average lost points to
·the end of last week at 3354.36. The
market reacted to various mixed signals
on the economy, inOation and interest.
The economy continues to be sluggish
and inflation has bee n no problem.
Recent increases in oil prices remind
everyone of the possibility of greater
than expected inflation and what it can
do to stock and bond prices.
On the New York Stock Exchange this
past week, advancing issues trailed
declines with 842 issues up, 1,258 down
and 343 unchanged. New highs were
reached by 136 stocks while 97 reached
new lows.
In the bond market, Treasury
securities ended the week mostly lower.
Stocks in the news included
International Paper, which declined 1/8
point along wi1h othe~ paper sloe~ ~n
concerns about a decline an advertising
lincngc. Wetterau lnc., n food
whole alcr, gained seven point after a
merger offer from Super Valu Stores.
And I lutchinson Technology fell by 4 l/4
points after the di k drive components
maker warned that its third-quarter
earnings '"'ould be hurt by manufacturing
inefficiencies.

From A1
It was a somewhat frumpy,
middle-America crowd that
packed the park to sec Perot, a
crowd clearly pnhappy with the
assembled phalanx of media that
partially blocked their view.

nated press area.
As Pero\' walked onto the speaker's plat-
form, supporters chanted "down in front" at
a volume almost equal to the cheers for the
independent candidate.
Delivering a revival-meeting-style sermon
lisaing America's assorted problems, speaking
in a dialect that sounded like part Will Rog-
ers and part l larry Truman, Perot com-
mented on his support in Orange County.
Volunteers in 1he county have gathered
156,000 signatures to put his independent
candidacy on the ballot.
"When Orange County specificaJJy popped
up on the screen everybody said, 'Oh that's
Reagan country.' Now you have sent Lhe two
parlies a message. you in California have
chan&Fd politics in this country. 1 hope, per-
manently."
While a sky-writing airplane spelled out,
"Perot '92" in white puffs or smoke high
overhead, Perot responded to 8CCU$8tions
that he was buying the election.
"Now both parties are accusing me of buy-
ing the election," Perot said. "Let me just
tell you what I've told them. I said, "That's
right. I'm buying it for the people because
they can't af£ord it, you've made it so expen-
sive,' " be said to wild cheers from the
crowd.
The presidential campaigns or Democrat
Bill Ointon and President George Bush
spent about $1 7 million each by the end of
April, according to Perot, who said his cam-
paign spent $1.4 million. "So if they want to
say we bought it, I'll say, 'Well, we sure
bought it wholesale fellows.' "

mindful or Perot's presence and reminding
the crowd that Perot opposed the Persian
Gulf War.
True to style, Perot recited a litany or
American problems he promises to solve,
with no detailed explanation of how he'd
solve them. But the crowd didn't care. They
were in deep awe or their new .. found folk
hero, and most supporters interviewed said
they believe Ross Perot is the only presiden-
tial candidate who could get lhinp done.
Quoting Winston Churchill, Perot sang the
theme song or his candidacy: "Never forget
O.urchill's words during World War JI, he
would say, •Action this day.'
"Lech Walesa (president of Poland) told
our Congress. •words are plentiful. but deeds
arc precious.' OlurchilJ said it more suc-
cinctly, •Action this day,' and that's what
we're all about."

that it's graffiti," Councilman Joe
Erickson explained. "And people arc
afraid of graffiti."
Roy Alvarado, counselor with the
Newport-Mesa school district, believes
the problem is more complex~ "T~ city
fathers arc sort of in denial that there is
a barrios in this community,'' he said.
"And by giving these kids a wall, they'd
be admitting to it."
But Alvarado said denying the fact
that there is gang activity in Costa Mesa
isn't going to make it go away. Setting
aside a wall for these kids' art, he
believes, would actually reduce the
amount of graffiti.
Rubio vouches for that, saying he is
willing to talk to the Lil ' Town gang
members in an effort to gel them to stop
vandalizing with spray paint -if he gets
a wall.
Rubio said he used to do graffiti, but
quit shortly after gelling involved with
Project STOP, a weekly rap session that
Alvarado directs for high-risk kids at
area high schools.
"Project STOP helped me to
understand that we have to take care of
pur city,'' Rubio said.
Equally important, Alvarado said,
Project STOP gives students "a chance
to identify as a La tino. A chance to talk
the talk and walk the walk.
"It seems like unless your white with
blue eyes and blond hair, you're not
legitimate," Alvarado ~aid. "Who's to
say that I need to dress like Joe
Erickson to be succes!.ful."
Likewise, Alvarado said, just because
a style of art is different, doesn't make it
any less valid.
Regardless of whether city officials
eventually agree, Rubio has already
sketched what he envisions on a wall at
the Rea community center.
It is a mural of a student on his way
home from school with books in hand.
On the one side of the boy, Rubio
would paint symbols of graduation and a
job. The other side, he said, would
depict ''gangs, death, jail bars and (the
boy's) mother and girlfriend crying."
Underneath the mural would read:
"It 's your choice."
"It's a me!>sage," Rubio says. "Just
about a boy who stops a minute to
think."
SMOKE
From A1
"It 's been my opinion that
each restaurant would reach
their own level in ac-
cordance to their own clien-
tele," he said. "It has to be
left up to the marketplace."
The new proposal may
take into consideration a
plan being formulated in
Laguna Beach, which would
phase in a complete smok-
ing ban over a few years, ac-
cording 10 Phillip Falceui, a
prevention specialist for the
Orange County Health Care
Agency.
Falcetti, who works on the
coalition, said the group will
undertake its no-smoking ef-
forts in Newport Beach one
step at a time.
"Our ultimate goal is to
prohibit smoking in all plac-
es, including re!>taurants,"
Falcetti said, "but because
of the timing and economic
issues, we won't he able to
do that over night."
Christianson, a long-time
advocate of smoking bans,
drafted the present law that
requires offices and other
places of employment to
designate non-smoking
areas. It also requires res-
taurants to set aside at least
25 percent of their space as
no-smoking zones. But crit-
ics say the 1985 ordinance
needs to meet the dema nds
of the increased number of
non-smokers today.
The coalition will be
armed with a report re-
leased la'>t week from the
American Heart Association
tha1 calls second-hand
smoke "a major preventable
cause of cardiovascular dis-
ease and death." Scientists
said a smoke-free environ-
ment should be a goal of so-
ciety.
According to Falcetti, the
report adds more evidence
and reaffirms previous Sur-
geon General warnings on
the effects of second-hand
smoke.
Kimberly I lcrold-Ditzlcr,
a Newport Beach resident
who brought the iss ue to the
City Council in. Febru~ry.
said such new information
will boost the efforts in
Newport Beach.
"1 believe that the mayor
wos the only one at the time
who didn't fully understand
the effects," Hcrold-D1t2ler
:aid. "(He) didn't w1n1 this
to turn into some kind or as·
be$tO scare. I think people
aren't 1ware of what the ac·
tuoJ health huards of sec-
ond-hand moke arc. It's

For Jason Clark, who will follow his

didn't seem to matter who was throwing,

Kehrli, the much-heralded three-year

The Sea J(jngs, who finished the au-

Clark, however, continued to electrify

COSTA MESA -Don 1 lunt, a longtime
baseball-coach aspirant, ha finally got his chance.
On Thursday, Costa Mc a High Athletic Director
Dean Cooper announced that Hunt, 38, '"ill replace
Tim Green as the school's head coach.
For Hunt, Green's assistant the past two sca!.Ons,
"I've been interested in coaching for quite a
while, but this is my first head coaching job. I me t
Tim playing softball the year before he took over
the (Co!ita Me)a coaching) position, and he said he
needed some help. Tim did a great job of gelling
the field and the racility over there in shape; what
we have to do now is play good ball on it.
"At Costa Mesa, it's been a rough go; there have
been a number or coaching changes in the last sLx
years and it's been hard to keep the program going
over there. I hope to stabilize it a little bit."
Green resigned on Sunday, stating personal rea-
sons.
Green was elevated to president of his fothe-r'
company, Harry S. Green, Inc., shortly after his fa.
ther suffered a stroke this year.
Hunt. a 1971 Costa Mesa graduate, pointed to
the consistent coaching that cross-town rival Es·

and Paul Troxel.
"That helps in building a winner," Hunt said.
