attend a VIP party for the fair this Thursday in Costa Mesa. HOW IT HAPPENE ,___ _______ _
Calvin Coolidge was president that year, when Lutz and five
other Orange County teen-agers were chosen to represent the fair.
One of her most vivid memories, she said, is having to sit on a
horse for the fair picture. "I had never been on a horse before,"
Lutz said. "It was quite funny."
Lutz said she had few duties as a fair queen, other than to pose
for pictures.
''Nobody even called us queens," said Lutz, then a 16-year old
enrolled in Santa Ana High School. ''I don't even know who chose
·us. One day someone came into my class, talked to my teacher
and I got to miss class to have my picture taken."
These days, Lutz enjoys visiting with friends and family and
playing bridge twice a week.

Glonts atto.rneys try

COSTA MESA -Attorney's for Dr.
Thomas Gionis have filed a petition to lower
the $2 million bail that a Superior Court
judge set Monday after sentencing the
orthopedic surgeon to five years in state
prison.
Gionis was convicted of masterminding the
1988 attack on his ex-wire Aissa Wayne -
the daughter of John Wayne -· and her
then-boyfriend, financie r Roger Luby.
Attorney's for Gionis filed an appeal •
immediately after the sentencing, but Judge
Ted Millard said he thought the defendant
was a night risk and set bail at an unusually
high $2 million.
"No one, not even a fairly wealthy person
could post that high a bail," said William
Kopenny, one of three attorney's who
represented Gionis in rhe trial. "l've seen
bail less on murder cases.''
Gionis was taken into custody after the
sentencing hearing at Superior Court
Monday and will be held in the Orange
County jail until the bail appeal hearing.
lf bail is not lowered, Kopenny said,
Gionis will work on raising the money to free
himself for the duration of the appeal, which
can take more than a year. Gionis would
need $200,000 cash in order to post $2
million bail.
Kopenny said Gionis is handling his first
few days in jail "very maturely and
respon ibly. His entire fami ly is behind him."
Gionis was convicted on fou r counts of
assault and conspiracy for hiring tw'o thug! 10

Council votes against
building tavern wall
.J:
COSTA MESA -The latest round in the
continuing baule between the city and th e
Goat Hill Tavern never left the barrel
Monday night, as the City Council voted 3-1
again st building a wall behind the bar 10
keep noise from bothering neighbors.
Mayor Mary Hornbuckle was the only
council member to vote for the 8-foot wall,
which would have run from 18th Street to
Bcoadway. The wall ~ould have ended
Magnolia at 126 E. 18th St. The entire
project would have cost an estimated
$115,950.
Councilman Peter Buffa was absent.
Nine residents, two merchants and a
property owner in the immediate area spOke
to the council. All agreed that the GGat Hill
Tavern was a nuisance, but all but two
objected to the wall.
Most said it would cause more problem~
than ii would solve by creating a dead-end at
Magnolia, rerouting traffic down an alley
between Broadway and Magnolia. And the
wall ~ould do nothing to solve the root of
problem, which is the noise and traffic from
patron , residents said.
The busy tavern, which boasts 98 beer~ on
tap and has become one of the most popular
watering holes in tow·n, has been th e target
of neighbor complaints for several years.
Neighbors say noise, trash and rowdiness are
constant problems, as is traffic.
The city voted in July 1990, to not renew
the tave rn's operating permit. The en uing
legal Q;lule has cost both sides more 1han •
SIOO,O{)().
In May, a state appellate court ruled that
the tavern could stay open. The city is now
asking the state Supreme Co urt to overturn
the deci ion.
Hornbuckle said Monday that "the
situation has gone on too long," and that she
did not want to see the council abandon all
the work that went into planning the wall.
The city owns a par.king lot behind the row
of businesses that front Newport Boulevard.

Respondents to The Daily Pilot's monthly survey of
Newport Beach and Costa Mesa retailers are ~eeing
more and more causes for optimism, but after two
years of battling a stubborn recession, they're hesitant
to attribute their recent sales increases to an
improving economy.
Instead, members of 1he survey group primarily
cited extraordinary fa ctors -such as a successful
sale, a surge in demand for certain products or
maturation of a fledgling ~tore -and made
cautiously optimistic cC'mments abou1 the economy.
But regardless of the causes, ales of local retailers
arc cJiearly improving. Me.n1bers of the sur\'cy group
in May posted a 17 percent increase, on average, O\Cr
their May 1991 sale le,els. The ~fa>· improvement,
which followed an a\crage sales g:.iin of l'.! percent in
April, was by fa r the best sho,,mg the ur\'ey
respondents have had in the last >ear.

We're looJ<ing for things to I.ind of snowball in the

The same respondent said he is so encouraged by
his store's recent sales imprnvcments that he has
increased staffing for the first time in two years. and
he's thinking about lifting a wage fr:eeze. He said he
is "a little more confident" about the local economy,
and he believes good weath er and the completion of
the Costa Mesa Free~ay extension v.ill have positi'c
impacts on sales.
One store o" ner a1J he believes the local

Road & Track magazine keeping pace in the lront pack
By Tony Cox
luSfllSS EddOr
I t's not the car magazine for
everyone.
1 Its road te'its may be too
tcchnicnl for th e casual reader
looking for n quick
recommendation on a cur. It
devotes too much spnce to cur
history and motor spons for
consumers interested only in
the current menu of
automobiles on the market.
But among passionate car
enthusiasts, Road & Track
inspires uncommon reader

celebrated its 45th anruversary
in its June issue, has relied o n

than any other maJor auto

"To be a maS'>·popularity

majority of the decision-making
process takes pince before they

becoming more aware of it."
altogether, he said.'
"There's been a tendency in the·
last three years to not run in as
many magazines," Hufford said.
"Some auto makers used to be in
over 100 magazines. They
elimina ted fringe magazines as
times got tough and concentrated
their dollars in the magazine!> that
worked best for them." ,

A fiery tale of two cities
~ qosta Mesa reports a dozen firewo rks-related fires . In Newpo1 t Beach, just two holiday fires are reported.
By Joel Beers --._
Staff Writer
T he Fourth of July weekend was truly a
tale of two cities in regards to fireworks.
Newport Beach, where all fireworks
arc illegal, reported two fireworks-related fires.
Costa Mesa, one of four Orange County
cities that allows "safe-and-sane" fireworks,
reported 12 such incidents.
None of the fires were serious in Costa
Mesa, most involving children playing with
fi reworks and starting small grass-fires or
igniting palm trees. City Manager Allan
Roeder said, overall, it was a quiet F.ourth of
July.
But it wasn't quiet for Leona Malcolm, who
received a call around 3 p.m. on the Fourth of
July from a frantic neighbor who told her roof
was on fire.
Malcolm's Cabrillo Street home suffered
about $4,000 in damage. It could have been
much worse. An alert neighbor jumped on her
roof. grabbed a hose and pul the fire out.
The neighbor, 17·) ear-old Tim O'Nan, is the
son of a Los Angeles Count) firefighter, said
the ne ighbor who first saw the fire, Margaret
Hodges.
··11 \\JS by the grace of God that he he;ird
me calling and saw the fire," Hodges said. "We
arc so thankful and so proud. He reacted so
fat, it was like magic. I don't know how he got
on the roof so fast without a ladder, it was just
marvelous."
Malcolm and Hodges spoke at the city
council Monday during the public comment
period, asking for a ban on fi reworks. Though
Malcolm's fi re was caused by_ an illegal
fireworks, she said -a complete ban is the only
solution.
The cpuncil did not adtlress Malcolm after
she spoke. Last year, the council decided to
tighten the existing fi reworks ordinance rather
than completely ban them.
M alcolm's housefire was the biggest
incident in Costa Mesa, said Susan
Moore, a department public information
officer. She said there were "about a dozen"
fireworks-related incidents. The reports taken
for each incident do not say if they were
caused by illegal or legal fireworks.
Every year, the fi re marshal compiles all fire
incidents for the week before and after the
Fourth and gives a report to the council. This
year's report will not be releasctl until August.
Roeder said fireworks is an annual is ue in
the city. But he said there has been no
discussion lately among the council in banning
fireworks and that he was surprised no citizens
addressed the council before the holiday.
B ut, he did sny the decision to allow
fi reworks is ~ policy decision among the
council, and that "given its druthers, the city
stafr • would most likely ban all fireworks.
"The probability of fi res is lower if you don't
allow (any) fireworks," Roeder said. "We have
been very fortunate at having very few fires ~
over the last several years."
In Newport Bench, a fi re at the historic
Upper Castaways property on July 2 was the
biggest fireworks-related incident. Police
arrested two Costa Mesa juveniles in
connection with the fire.
Ray Pendleton. a Newport Beach Fire
Captain, said that increased enforcement has
reduced fi reworks incidents in that city.
"My gut-feeling is that yes, I thi nk we've
seen 11 decrease in my 28 years on the force in
fireworks-related fires as well as injuries ... As
a rookie fireman, we didn't always enforce the
existing laws, but for the past 10 r.ears we have.
And quite honestly, I think there s a di rect
relationship between rigidly enforcing the laws
and fewer problems."

"I'm st ill very dboppointed
that the City Council chose to
waste our tax dollars by spend-
ing a Sl.03 per name to vali-
date what was obviously a plu-
rality of Newpon Deach vot·
crs," Zanck said.
Mayor Phil Sansone, how-
ever, wasn't so sure.
"It took nearly 8,000 signa-
tures to get the required nu m-
ber," SanSOJl! said. "Tbat's
over 1,000 invalid signal ures. It
wasn't a slam dunk as those •
who wanted the initiative im-
plied. The count was justified."
Sansone, who said he did nol
sec a comparison bet"een paid
politicians and volunteer politi-
cians such as council members,
said he plans 10 campaign
against the initiative.
And citing a recent Newport
Harbor Area Chamber of Com-
merce survey that showed 75
percent of the businesses in the
city believe Newport Oeach has
a favorable climate for busi·
ncss, chamber president Rich-
ard Luehrs hinted that the
chamber may also oppose the
term limit initiative.
"If people are satisfied with
the wa~ local government is
doing things, why are we so
concerned with throwing the
rascals out?" Luehrs asked.
But John Hedges said he's
not worried about the chamber
opposition.
"If they do, they will prob-
ably give the people of Ne~
port Deach all the more reason
to support the measure," Hedg-
es said.

COSTA MESA -~veryone
was being assured Cos1a Mesa
High would have a football
team this fall, as well as a
coach in Myron Miller.
The rub was what kind of a
football team? And \\hat kind
of a coach?
A lot of lhc apprehension has been soothed
today following Tuesday's acti.on in the New-
port-Mesa School Dis1rict, which has declared
Miller a full-lime employee "ilh respansibili-
ties as athletic director, acth ities director and
football coach.
"I've just signed it and I ha\le the contr:.tC! in
my hands," said Miller Tuesday afternoon.
''It's signed, scaled and delivered."
Thus comes to a conclusion a period of inde·
cision wh ich had Costa Mesa faithful wonder-
ing. in light of the ongoing financial crunch
within trtc Newport-Mesa School District, a
squeeze which has taken its toll wi th the loss of
56 teaching positions and 187 classified em-
ployee positions, affecting 243 persons in all.
Miller sajd the "limbo status" he has carried
wi1h him these past few months, since being
named Costa Mesa's coach, was "much harder
on others than myself.''
Continued Miller: "I had some assurances by
people l trusted. The hard part was on my as·
sistants, the kids and the parents. They weren't
sure where 1hey s1ood. But everything has gone
the way we had hoped."
The three-fold role of a1hle11c director, ac-
tivilies director and foo1ball coach is a load
which has not been carried by an individual
within the Newport-Mesa District since prob-
ably in the early '40s, or earlier, when two·man
football staffs and no activities director (or ath·
lctic director)_were common.
"Dean Cooper has agreed to stay on as ~th·
letic director through the football season to
help make the transition smoother," said Mill-
e r. "It'll be in1eresting, there nre a lot of hats

"It's definitely tougher than I thought it'd be," said the future
Golden West College performer. "It's very demanding on 1hc
body. I'm so re every day. [ defini1ely had to get psyched up right
away. because these are the best high school players around.
When guys arc stronger and faster, the game is played on a dif-
ferent level. In that respect, this will help me prep:ue for Gold-
en West. 1 just hit the Tylenol and head out to practice."
Among Finney's frequent targets as a blocking fullback is
former Newport teammate Darin Man!Wall, who will start at
outside linebacker againsl the North.
''ll seems like Darin and l are going a1 it more often than
anvone else," Finney said. "It is a liule harder to hil someone yo~·ve gro\vn up whh, but there's also a pride factor involved."·
Mangnall said taking on Finney on a kick-out block, is one of
his lea)t favorite things about practice..
"He's the hardest hitter I've gone ag\linst," Mangnall said. "l
I.now it's Finney coming at me, because he's usually running
harder than the other blocking backs. 1 know it's going to be a
blo". so 1 try to give him something to think about, too. Some-
times he beats me, and sometimes, I get him. We ride to and
trom practice together, so we usually do a li1tle good-natured
ki~ding about our duels."
South Coach Bruce Rollinson of Mater Dei, who typically em-
plo)::. a one-back set, said Finney will be among those rotated in
that scheme. But, recognizing Finney's blocking skills, he will be
the fca1urcd fullback in any two-back situations, particularly
nc.1r the goal line.
"He 'll carry the ball. but he~ll also be counted on for his

Sj)olts EcMor
CORONA DEL MAR -Chris Dillon, a 35-year-
old Laguna Hills resident and a former University
of Kentucky standout, has been named as Corona
del Mar High's new girls soccer coach, replacing
Peter Farrell. ~IP.i~~
Dillon, Kentucky's leading scorer and MVP as a •
junior and the team's captain as a senior, comes to
Corona del Mar with six years of coaching e~perience on the
youth level, having coached the Corona del Mar Riptide's 11, 13
and 14-year-olds.
He's no stranger to the Corona del Mar program, having
worked with virtually the entire squad in previous years.
The Riptide's prog'ram began six years ago and Dillon's squad
finished dead last with just one victory in its initial campaign. A
year later it swept to the division championship.
Dillon expressed confidence in the upcoming seast>n, citing the
fact Corona del Mar will enter with a very young team despite its
experience. •
1'l'm just very optimistic and excited about it," said Dillon. "I
think we should have a ve ry decent season."
