Should the Hard Rock Cafe be allowed to erect its distinctive 50·foot flashing guitar atop its planned location in Newport Center? The city's planning commission tbou~bt it was OK. But not all of our readers. Here's a sampling of responses to the decision left on our Readers' Hotline. You can get involved by calling 642·6086 with your comments. -tbe editor 0 I think that side of town needs a little color and if they are going to put in the Hard Rocle Cafe, put up the guitar to go with it. If you want to see gaudy, come over to West Newport. One guitar won 't hurt that side of town. SONJA THAYER West Newport ·o I think the sign will lend a lot of ambiance to the whole area and show that Newport Beach is not only a vacation land but a shopping land. JEFFREY STERN Newport Beach 0 I th.ink it's pretty poor. I don't think it is in good taste for the city. What are they going to think of next, putting a SO-foot Nike shoe in front of a Nike store, or a Foot Locker in Newport Beach. KELLY HANES Balboa Island 0 I think that Fashion Island could use some extra business and I'd hate to see it die out and I think that is a great idea. So go for the Hard Rock Cafe giant guitar sign. WANDA FLYNN Newport Beach 0 I definitely say no to the Hard Rock Cafe sign. CLINT MOSES Newport Beach 0 The sign I think is really a great thing, it shows the imagination, creativity of the restaurateur. I thmk it adds character and design to shopping centers that allow that type of signage. I think some individuals would like to see everything bland in the shopping center and I think that really equates to a kind of boring setting in general, not an exciting and kind of interesting place to shop. I would say let the retailers retail and those who don't like that type of setting should sit in sand dunes in the desert or something. DAN PARKER Newport Beach 0 I can't believe my eyes. I think the all mighty dollar is wi nning out again over any concept of beauty or design. Fashion Island is probably the most well-planned busin~pmter ahd shoppinf center that we have, perhaps, in California ... To put a SO-foot five-story neon guit.r Is just incredible. Smaller surf on Tuesday helped cut the number of rescues in half to about 50 on Tuesday compared to more than 100 rescues made on ~tonday by Newport lifeguards. The hot weather 1s a welcome ch.inge from last summer's dreary ove rcast skies for beachside mer· cha nts. PLAYHOUSE From A1 ries me not only as a board member but nlso as an arti!.t. It's heartbreaking, con- sidering that neighborhood, wh ich really needs something arti stic. Dut the council doesn't see it that way." The Playhouse's season be- gin s Sept. 10 with 11 perform- ance or "The Foreigner." The Playhouse began as a full)'·funded recreation de- partment program in the early 60s. Its first home was the Orange County Fair· grounds, where it gave a young Kevin Costner a venue. In 1983 it moved to Its cur- rent home at the Rea Com- munity Center. In an agreement hammered out last June, the Pl ayhouse "ill be a self-sufficient entity by 1997. • The gu iding force behind the Pl ay house, TambelJini has been intimately involved since her days as a recreation su- per"\ isor for the city. She said the Playhouse's economic worries are shared by other the alers. "Every theater in the coun- try 1s hurting. Just go to Los Angeles where they're closing do" n. We 're not alone in th is." ARTS: From A1 forced them to nuke cuts th:11 few people are happy with. "Art is a wonderful thing to do but when there's limited resources we have to make difficult decisions and art just is not one of the city's highest priorities like police, fire , roads and parks," said Councilmnn Joe Erickson. The city has historically awarded grants 10 arts organizations that operate within the city. With th e city mired in the state's budget morass, council members cut art grnnts from $175,000 to $87,500 in June. That money wns to be divided among 17 arts orgnnizations. But, the city has since frozen that money, pending the state's final budget. And JlOW, even that money may not be coming . "We have been put on notice that we may not receive a dime," Hajek said. "We realize the severity of (the budget crisis) but we think our cu ts are disproport ionate. The council could be kinder." The 17 affected arts agencies do not need the grant money to survive, officials say. Many use it to fund community outreach programs or scholarship services. "We U!le that money to fund programs that get our art into the community, which is what we all need so desperately," said Lori Durrill, managing director of Opera Pacific. Gross said, with money from private donors nnd ticket sale1 barely enough to cover operatin COSb, The Ballet Moolmnrtre relied on its $3,000 city grant last year for scholnrships for underprivileged children who m huve the desire and tnlent to dance but not the financial resources to afford the $120 monthly tuition, according to Mlrti Stroman, office manager. She said the fact the council earmarked arts funds is symptomatic o( a society-wide b ugainst the arts. "Even in schools, art progra get cul first. And this affects th people who excel in those areas Some kids like math or history, some excel in the arts. If you're only centering on kids gifted in academics, what are the other ones goi ng to do but lose interes or get in trouble?" Like every arts advocate interviewed, Stroman said she -doesn't believe the City Council places a high priority on arts. Councilwoman Sandra Genis i!I the first person mentioned by arts-funding supporters. In June, Genis dismissed arts programs as "non-essen tial city service" and questioned if they should be funded by cities. She has heard criticism of he' and the council, but believes critics arc missing the big picture.
