~Teachers remain optimistic despite district's

NEWPORT BEACH -The new school year begins Thursday
in the shadow or Ollifornra's ongoing recession, in a climate of
withering finnnciol prospects for school di stricts throughout the
state.
But despite rising clnss sizes, fewer teachers, acros!.·thc-board
budget cuts, stalled teacher contract negotiations nnd reduced
supplies and ~e"'ice , teachers have not lost their enthusin~m.
"MO)l of u love what we do," said Ensign Middle School
biology teacher Barbara Wagner. "I'm concerned about tuchcr
like myself who love what they do, as the class sizes act larger and
laracr. I know that burnout i going to become a real iss ue,
because you can only -do so much. But we're going to try and
mokc the best of every situation."
While the average class izc is expected to be about 31 tudCJ'lts,
teachers throuahout the Ncwpon-Mcsa Unified School District
will have as many a 38 students in some classes.
More than 500 new students arc expected this school year, a
number roughly equivalent to the size or a mall elementary
school. School district enrollments during the Inst two school years
g~ by about 1,000 students, the biggest growth spurt in more
than 20 years. Enrollments this ycnr arc expected to reach about

CONCERT REVIEW
By T J Hutchinson
,
..
Though tour buses arc usually nondescript for
performing artists, true Jackson fans could pick his
bus out on the highway. The dcstin:nion sign on
the front reads "Real World" af1er one of ht
earl iest songs, "Here in the Real World."
Jackson told Friday's Paci fic Amphitheater
audience that it was "lively" and more exci1cd than
mos1 crowds. Part of that is Jachon's '"de appc;.il
in country music. But a lot of 1hc credit has to go
to the fast-paced, fu n show b} openers Diamond
Rio.
Diamond Rio has many of 1b o\\n No. I song to .
attest to its success -like ··~tect in the M11Jdle,"
"Norma Jean Riley" and .. Momma Don't Forget 10
Pray fo r Me" -but until Diamond Rio is seen in
pe111on, country fans can't appreciate the band
members for the real talents 1hcy arc.
The band's goal is to ha'e fun, and to do thJt
v.ell enough to avoid any "rear· ""*"···The
five-member band has' fun v. ith each other and the
audience by prancing around the stage, including
sorpe slam-dancing by two gu1tamt during a
bluegrass medley.

always been of the school of
thought that puts the time at •

Time is a much more mystical
concept than most of us realize.
Try this experiment. Look at
your digital watch. Now close
your eyes. Do you cease to

There was a period in my life

find the nest where the ants
are coming from. This will be
fairly easy lo do by following
the line of ants to the mound of
soil they will be coming out of.
Pour boiling water from a tea
l..ettle, into the mound, to give
them a jacuzzi they will never
forget. This will damage their
home and send the critters to
iind or make another.
Washing down on a regular
ba~is is another way to control
them. Ants are a by product of
something that went wrong
with a plant. for instance, if
you have pl":nts infested with ·
the dreaded whlteny, they will
secrete a honeydew substance
out of. the plant they are
f ceding on. This is now a meal
for the ant. So by washing
down plants and sidewalks you
arc controlling two pests at
once.
N.ow, chemically speaking
diazinon has seen use quite
eif ectively to control ants. This
stuff is real nasty though and
should only be used as a last
resort.
Malathion would he next in
line as far as lower toxicity
would be concerned. And,
contrary to popular belief you
do not need a helicopter to
spray this stuff.
Dursban would be my choice
spray for ants. It has a lower
toxicity level and it is broken
down by the action of sunlight.
This means it will do the job,
but it doesn't stick around for a
long period of time. This is
beneficial to the little ones.

In the event of a small fire,
don't panic. Use a fire
extinguisher to put it out. If it
can't be put out quickly, call the
fire department from a neighbor's
house if necessary.
• In the event of a large fire,
decide which method of escape
to us. Before opening any doors,
feel the door with the palm of
your hand. If after a few seconds
you feel no heat, chances are
escape can be made through a
hall or front door. Be sure you
close any windows before
opening the door and close all
doors behind you to slow the
spread of fire. Stay low to the
ground when making your
escape.
If the door feels warm or hot to
the touch, don't open it Use the
window. Once you and your
family are out of the home, go to
the prearrange meeting place an
stay there. let firefighters know if
everyone is present or if someone
is missing.
I don't like using a hose end
sprayer to dispense product.
Using a hand pump sprayer is
bener in controlling the amount
that gets on your target insect
as well as the amount that is
actually used. for your child's
sake, make sure all toys are out
of range when spraying. Kids
have this uncanny act of
sticking everything int9 their
mouth, And a tainted toy with
any kind of chemical, no matter
how safe it is, is not good.
