I learned that basic truth this week, when I bad the good fortune to Work the dreaded Sunday shift at the Pilot on the day we hosted a panel of readers who watched with us and analyzed the first of this month's thl'ee presidential debates. The truth Is, when it comes to political debates, unless there's a huge screw-up or an especially brilliant perfonnance by one of the candidates, there's never really any winner. dignity. •Bush -You're way behind, and your mix of self-praise and jabs at Clinton prpbably won't be cn?uafl to push you over th~ top; Play d1ny. The other panelist, a • staunch Democrat, thought independent candidate Ross Perot won the debate, but •ddcd that his guy Ointon also did well. I also talked to local touts for the three candidates, and all, naturally, thought their guys looked "presidential" and performed marvelously. That's easy to do when your guy doesn't stumble badly -a la Dan Quayle in 1988 comparing himself to President John F. In their view, Clinton looked "presidential" -there's that word aaain -and strong. while Bush was off his game and was again too insensitive to the country's economic problems. They concluded that Perot, who seemed to me to have Bush-like views on many issues, served as a great setup man for Ointon. So how could people watch the same debate and come up with such different conclusions as to who won and why? The truth is, when it comes to political debates, unless there's a Kuge screw-up or an especially brilliant performance &y one of the candidates, there's never really any winner. People see wha• they want to see in their favorite candidate, and the undecided voters are pushed the way they were already leaning. You're going to need some gadget p lays. Insult the other candidates. Make people laugh. Sell them on rhe idea that their rich uncle Ross is just crazy enol!gh and just powcfful enough to save them from the villains in Washington. Of course, none of these scenarios will become· ~reality, except maybe a conservative approach by Clinton. Playing it safe and following the script is the political debating style of today.
