Laguna Canyon Road, Newport Coast Drive;
and Back Bay Drive remained closed Monday
because of flooding, and streets in Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa were marred with pot·
holes. In Costa Mesa, a hole about 12-to 15·
feet deep opened up in the parkway on 16th
Street at Superior. At the Costa Mesa Golf
and Counuy Club, water pooled in large lakes
throughout the course.
"In the old days, Costa Mesa didn't believe
in storm drains," said Costa Mesa City Man-
ager Allan Roeder. "We've had to play a lot of
catch-up.''
Some Costa Mesa houses were Ooodcd,
causing the evacuation of al least one family.
During periods of heavy rain, several intersec-
tions in the city were knee deep in water.
"There's been a premium on sandbags,"
Roeder said. "I can't count lhe number of
loads of sand that we have brought in."
City officials in Newport Beach say they have
used thousands of sandbags since the storms
began. Local beaches and harbor areas are now

"We hope that the community will 'bear with
us,'' said Newport Bench City Manager Kevin
Murphy. "It's been many days of rain and now
we .hope to have a few days to begin 1he clean-

Flooding in Newport was heaviest on Pacific
Coast Highway and on Balboa and Lido i~·
laods. Minor mud slides occurred on Coast
Highway, Bnyside Drive and Baek Bay Drive .
A small hillside gave way on Dover Drive near
Cliff Drive.
Potholes on Co~t Highway and Newport
Boulevard cannot be permanently fo~ed until
the streets dry out. Caltrans bears the responsi-
bility for repairing the two routes.
"We've really been lucky.'· said Mil..c Pi nni,
deputy director of general services for Newport

The luxury hotel, which was

topped by shapes of elephant tusks

night1 and suites rent for as much
as "several thousand dollars" a
night.
Because of higher development
costs in this area, such a resort
would cost $600 million to build in
Orange County, Allison said.
Clearly, designing the Palace of
the Lost City is not the type of
architectural project that comes ·
along every year, or even every
career. 1 "It was the most imaginative,
most complex, most fast-moving
project I've worked on,'' said the
60-year-old Allison. "It was one of
the highlights of my career."
The job required !5 trips to the
project site in Bophuthatswana,
Journeys thar required two
overnight nights each way. The
project also consumed about 75
percent of Allisoh's time and
energie over the last three years, ·
What they' found was over-
worked teachers and crowded
classes.
Pegasus. for instance, hired a
teacher and instructional aid Jor
ttre-r7 students In his son AJex's
first-grade class. The average class
size at Newport Elementary is 34
~tudcnts per teacher.
Furra said he also is unhappy
wit h the programs that have been
slashed from the public school sys-
tem in recent years, such as art
and mu sic classes.
"The cultural things these young
kids should be exposed to just
aren't there anymore. And ·we
know lots of friends and teachers
who feel the same way."
Still, Furra said, the choice to
go private was a tough one: ''Our
son would rather be playing with
his friends on the sand at Newport
Elementary."

N~WPORT BEACH -Al @ Jt~1r1s Nra1te, Crc,shman midfielder • •
1 c sen o Newport Harbor
High will become a marked
player before· she obtnins a
driver's license.
Although Nelsen isn'l the only scorina
~hreat for the Sailors, her reputation is grow-
ing quickly, as evidence or her recent All·
Irvine Tournament selection.
· "Jill i~ surprising a lot of people for a
freshman," said Newpor& Harbor girls soccer
co:ich Scou Dameron, whose team finished
5-4 in 1hc,prescason. •
"Her skill level is high and she has a lot or
ability with a lot of speed. She understands
the game well for only being a freshman. I
think at times she surprises pcor.te. They
kind· of underesti mate her, but she s doing a
lot."
It seems the Sailbrs have a ruture.
But that's not to discount this season.
though a J ·2 record in their first three Sea
View League games didn't exactly stop the
presses.
Newport Harbor has eight .,returning play-
ers, mo5t o( whom either stancd or played a
lot in 1991-92, including junior goalkeeper
Kim DcMayo, who already has five shutout'
this senson'.
Capt:iin Meggen Fleener Uunior haJfba I.)
:ind Stacy Gerry (senior f~rward) control the
team, while junior forward Diane KelMy
1lve1 Newport Harbor an additional scorlna
threat.
"We don't really have one player who's
been 1corina all our aoals," Dameron aald.
"Nelsen, Oerry and Kelsey have been doina
most ot the scoring, but l actually think our
strength is being pretty balanced. We don't
have to rely on 1-0 victories to win. We've
been able to score a lot or goals, but we
don't give them up easily, either. Our de-
fense is strong, but when we need to score,
we have the ability to do it."
Seniors Amy Anden.on (defender) and
Molly Hilterbrand (midfielder) and juniors
Lindsey Cunis {sweeper) and Jenny St. Sure
(midfielder) also return from '92.
But "ith the already-tough Sea View
League having instantly improved with the
udditions or Irvine and Santa Margarita,
Newport will have its work cul out in 1993.
"Obviously, Santa Margari&a and Irvine are
going to have an impact joining the league,"
Dameron said. "We re better than last year
and l think Corona del Mar is better. I've
heard that Tustin and Saddleback 1re better.
too, so the league has gotten way better,
more competitive than I've seen.
"Players arc smarter, there's more intcl·
