J"'ifcwport in a 41-32 victory.
"I think (Uni) sot a hule tired
in the fourth quarter, and our de-
fense picked it up a little in the
aecond half," said Jakosky, whose
~eam r~mai~ed unbeaten in six
Sea View League games, 11-5
overall. II was the Sailors eighth
straight win.
University (8· 7, 4-2) could have
forced a three-way tie for the
tague least with a victory, but the
rojans shot just 25 percent (14 of
6), and netted just three field
goals after taking· a 26-24 lead
)Vith 3:32, left in the third quarter,
Newport used a 7-0 run,
sparked by Genevieve Evarts'
three-pointer, to reclaim 31'-26
advantage. Evarts hit another
bucke,t to spark seven more unan-
Jwered points, after the Trojans
~losed to within 32-30 with 6:42
left in the game.
·Though crediting University, Ja-
kosky was not ahogcther pleased
with her squad's rebounding, de-
fense or inten ity.
"1 don't think we played very
good defense until the third quar-
ter," Jakosky said. ''We gave up 11
offensive rebounds in the first
half. which is more than we JlOr·
mnlfy allow an entire game. I don't
know why, but we just weren't
ready to play. Dut you have 10 also
crcd1~ Uni. Defense won that
game1 for us.''
Helping key the defense was
Michaela Ross, who witched as·
signments to i.~adow Trojan point
• guard Nicole G:illardo midway
through the tlmd quarter, allowing
1us.t t"-O of Gallardo's It total
points.
Inside zone defenders Evarts,
Melissa Schull. Diane Pulido and
Tina llowman also helpcd-lim11
Uni center Jennifer Stanley to just
four of her 15 points after inter·
'mission. Stanley missed her final
seven shots, to finish 6 of 24 from
the field . ,
Ross and £,arts led the 'offense
' with 12 and 11 points, rc specrively,
"'hile Schutz. Clayton, Gina He:id
and Pulido had four apiece.
Ross also h:id 10 rebounds and
three steals, while Evarts (seven
