Fire is another blow to troubled school district
CORONA DEL MAR -
In light of the various blows

School District has been
socked with over the past
year, math teacheT Steve
Messpngcr said the blaze
that jutted the Corona del
Mar High School faculty
lounge Sunday_ wasn't too
s~rising.
• lt's just one mare 1hing,"
Messenger said, somewhat
resigned. "The district has
been faced with so many
problems. This seems rel-
atively small on the crisis
scale."
Messenger said he was
slightly unsettled, however,
by student reactions to the
blaze, which is being investi-
gated as a possible arson.
"They don't seem at all
bothered," he said. "It's a
little disturbing."
Principal Tom Jacobson··
informed students and fac·
ulty about the blaze and i1s
$125,000 price tag Monday
at an 8 a.m. assembly.
When asked how the stu-
dents reacted, Jacobson said
they were disappointed -
but primarily because they
weren't going 10 get out of
school.
Damage from 1he fire put
nearly two dozen cl:l¥rooms
ard the c3fcteria temporarily
out of commis!lion, bul
teachers hustled to sci up
shop in vacan t areas, includ-
ing the gymnasium, and
trucked food in for lunch, so
that instruction could con-
tinue.
Despite the di ruptions,
Jacobson said, ''The day
went smooiher than ex-
pected."
Police and fire officials are
still investigaiing whether the
blaze was set intentionally.

through March

was held to
introduce the

the community.
The youngest
artist in ·
attendance was
Matt McGraw, a fourth-grader at
St. Margaret's. His "box
sculpture" made of toilet paper
cardboard rollers and heads~
received raves from John W.
lottes, president of the Otange
County Art Institute, Laguna
Beach. "Terrific, absolutely
sensational," commented I:.ottes.
''The attention to detail, the form
and use of material ... all very
original."
Fred Chaung, Tiffany's artistic
window display design coordinator,
served as one of the judges. "The
jury looked for several common
qualit ies in all the work
sut>mitted," he said. "A certain
amount of spontaneity, color and
form were all looked for. Some of
the work is very good. Some is just
there. The seven pieces we· have
selected are exceptional. Tiffany's
is proud 10 display them."
Joanna Arneson, Alfonso Avila,
liuie Atwood, Robert Friedman,
Francisco Mendez and Liana
Spangler are included ih the
chosen few. ·
This year's event was chaired by
two extremely dynamic and
graceful women, Nancy Lawrence
of Monarch Beach and JoAnn
l<illinsworth of Newport. Both
ladies are charter members of the
"Designing Women," serving the
Art Institute and the community
for 19 years.
Nancy's artistic talent passed to
daughter Elizabeth, a
Princeton-educated architect who
has recently returned to Newport
Beach following an employment
term with the world-renowned
l.M. PEI in New York. "This is
not a fund-raising event, this is a

Steel Foundation," Ms. Lawrence
advised.
"A collaboration between
professional artists and emerging
artists. Tiffany has offered a
val uable forum to dignify youth
art," added the eloquent Ms.
Killingsworth.
Seen admiring the work of the
young talent were Susan and
Michael McFadden, Nancy and
Kent Snyder, Sandy and Larry
Wessel, Elaine and Richard
Fruee, and Barbara and Paul
Penrose.
Jo Ellen Quall s, vice president
of Tiff any and Co., summed up
Lhe spirit of the evening. "Tiff any
hopes to gjve an opportunity to
artists to be seen by a different
seament of 10Ciety. Much of our
jewelry is designed by artisu, and
we are committed by legacy and by
design to continue to support the
ortist."
