SOS benefit
up in smoke
at Lions Park
F or art's sake.
UP IN SMOKE -"Hemp festivals come_
before homeless benefits in Costa Mesa."
Chris Fahcy's lament comes on the beets of ~he
ci~'s rejection of a permit for a March 20 music
fe stival at Lions Park benefiting Share Our Selves.
Fahey, who runs Costa M~a-based Stab You in
the Back Records. said city of(iciaJs at first en-
couraged him to hold the event featuring local al·
tcrnative bands. He bas organ·
izcd three previous concerts that
have raised more than 5,000 ca11s
Stage
Lites
of food for SOS. .
However, after he paid the city
a non1refu ndable permit fee,
Fahey said he was told the fes·
tival would be too Joud and that
there is not enough parking.
But Fahey pointed out there
recently was a ttemp Festival in
the same parf by groups that
suppQrt legalization of marijuana.
"They had a band with no per·
mit," sa1d Fahey, who will 'go be·
fore the City Council on !vfonday
to complnin about the rejection.
''There were officers of the law everywhere. But it
\\as not shut down or anything."
The P.ark also hosts the annual Lions Club Fish
Fry, wtiich features carnival rides, game booths
and overflow parking.
Sandra Ben))()n of the city's Code Enforcement
Dcpartmen1 said the Hemp Festival did not have
to get. a permit because it was protected by lhe
Constitution's freedom of speech provisions.
She said she did not know there was live music
at the Hemp Fei.tival until Fahey told bcr, but she
was unsU'fe whe ther the city could have stopped it
due to the legal questions such action would have
raised.
As for the Fish Fry, Benson said the Lions Club
permit will come before the city again this year
and it will be ubjcct to the same criteria as any
other event. But unlike Fahey's daytime concert,
which can only utilize parking lots on both sides of •
Lions Park, the evening Fish fry can also use park·
ing at the.nearby library and community cente!.:_
Also, the fish Fry does nof require amplified
music like the eoncert docs. The SS-decibel limit
impo cd during daytime hours would not possibly
be enough for Fahey's bands, Benson said.
Despite the permit rejection, Fahey vowed the
show will go on. It's ~lated for noon to 5 p.m. Sat·
urday, March 20, on private property: a warehouse
adjacent to the Stab You in the Back Records of-
fice at 1926 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa.
Bands performing include Ncigl;Jbpr, The
Goods, The Women, The Muffs and Flu!. Pizza
Bakery will dish out slices of its fare to anyone
who donates canned food. Additional parking will
be provided by,.cJub Mesa at 19th St[._ce~d Pia·
centia.

Omaima to be sentenced
. for murder # or husband
COSTA MESA -The 24-year-old Egyptian
woman who killed and dismembered her
56-ycar-old husband duting the 1991
Thanksgiving holiday is scheduled to be
sentenced today at Superior Court in Sapia Ana.
Omaima Nelson was convicted Jan. 13 of
second-degree murder. After six days of
deliberations, jurors rejected a first-degree
murder verdict on grounds they cpuld find ho
evidence or premeditation the night she stabbed,
dismembered and cooked parts of her newlywed
husband it their Elden Avenue apartment. •
Nelson faces a minimu~ of 18 )'Cars in prisofl.
At least another five years could-be tacked on
since jurors also found Nelson .8lJilfy of
assaulting an ex-boyfriend with a gun a year
before she killed Bill Nelson. .
Although jurors said they could not agree on
a motive, they rejected the defendant's •
contention that she began auacking her husband
with an iron in self-defense after be started
beating and raping her. .. f
During the trial, Deputy District Attorney
Randolph Pawloski pointed out that doctors
found no evidence that Nelson nad been raped.
Furthermore, several of Nelsbn's ex-boyfriends
testified that she is a manipulative woman who
-has uud scx_to her advantage. The defendant
married Bill Nelson - a reputed Oig spen er -
l~ss than three weeks before she killed him. ·
Nelson admits she hit her husband numerous
times over the head with an iron and then stab-
bed, castrated and dismembered him. The pe-
tite, 5-foot woman then tried to dispose of the
more than 200 pounds of body parts by offering
an acquaintance thousands of dollars to help.
Nelson's attorney, Public Defender Tom
Mooney, tried to convince jurors that Nelson
went into a killing frenzy partly because she was
suffering from a psychosis brought on by years
of physical, emotional and sexual battery at the
hands or men.

to represent him in bankruptcy
court, said the gems may not be
worth. more than fees claimed by
the gem deale!·
But Albert is not yet convinced
that Wagner lost his ill-aouen

"l haven't decided whether Mr.
Wagner is himself a victim or
whether this is another chapter in
an elaborate ruse," Albert said.
"ti's too early to say."
Wagner's defense attorney, Paul
Meyer, could not be reached for
•comment.
Alben said Wqner's attorney
has made "some efforts" to coop-

say they believe Wagner is holding
back information.
"There's no cffon to cooperate
on his pan except that he pleaded
guilty and he signed certain stipu·

that, ..... he didn't really tell us any-

Jn Japan, where the keeping of koi takes on a
sacred air and individual fish can be worth hundreds
of thousands of dollars, there lives the granddaddy of
all koi: a 225-year-old, living specimen. "It's been

The kecpina and breeding or koi~ a hobby which
originated in Japan in the mid-l800s, has been
growing at a rate of about 20 p,crcent a year,
according to the magazine Koi USA. There are now
about 100,000 private koi ponds in the United States
- a $75 million hobby in 1992.
"1 believe it's ironic . . . that
someone in-fW1lgner's) position
who has admitted embezzlement,
allowed himself to be swindled big
time," Pittman said.
Meyer delayed Wagner's sen-
tencing date until April 2 to give
his client time to demonslrate his
willingness to cooperate with the
investigation and make restitution
Newport B~ch computer programmer Henry Su,
36, has such a passion for koi that he is constructing
a swimming-pool-size pond for his collection.
Humans are not the only koi enthusiasts. At the
Phillips' Corona del Mar home, the tranquil sound or
a w·aterfall pouring into the two-level koi pond is
sometimes--brokcn-by the-noisy inYasion of

COSTA MESA -The easiest way to
explain the character' of this year's Es-
lancia High baseball team is to look at
one simple fact. ~
Despite having scored JUSt six runs in
three games o far this season, the Ea-
gles have managed to ~in two of them.
The latest succc s was Thursday's 2-1
victory over vi iting El Modena tn the
consolation semifinals of the Newport
Elks Tournament. Estancia will face
Foothill on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the
oonsolation championship at Tus1in.

How the Eagles scored their runs typi-
fies the personality of 1his year's ve rsion or Estancia baseball.
With the game scoreless in the bottom
of the fourth inning, Juan Mendoza led
off for the Eagles with · a single to left.
He was moved to second on Pedro
A rceyut's successfu l sacrifice b unt.
Scott Usher reached on EJ Modena
pitcher Steve Krishfield' wide throw to
fi rst with Mendoza holding at second.
The count went to 3·2 on ihc next hitter
and the runners were se nt. .
The next pitch was a swinging strike
