Like televised golf, such

God, I love those stories.

Hot on the heels of the

led to the firing of 1hc police chief and a

retaliate.

Is B Toro mwer to air tralllc •b'lllT
1 think that El Toro Marine base
iS the only reasonable spot for an·
other airport which we have to
have to relieve John Wayne. 0th·
erwisc, we're going to be in trou-
ble. So I think it's up to the super·
visors 10 get wi th it. Jf they're
going to close it~e Marine base,
then let's make an airport out of it
and not a housing project ot some
commercial buildings.
RICHARD CORNELL

0
I definitely think El Toro should
be closed. I think it would make a
wonderful site for a second air·
port. I .think that it is feasible aJ-.
th ough I thin k the people who live
near it would prefer that there not
be an airport there. But I think in
terms of balancing out the air traf-
fic and there not being too much
imposition on any one area that
this would be a good idea.
CARL HUFBAUER
Santa Ana Heights
0
On the question of the El Toro
Marine Corps Air Station, I think
it would make sense to consider
partial conversion 10 a civilian air-
port with the facility left intact to
a degree so 1ha1 it could be used
in the event of a national emer-
gency as a 011litary air base once
again

I per!>onally think the people in
Ne~port Beach arc being one way
1n 1hinking this airport should be
clo!>ed. My husband is a 30-year
Manne and we will be losing some or has re tirement benefits by the
closu re of El Toro. Not only that,
but the unemp loyment ol Orange
County will be goin' up. I think
they need to reconsider it u It is
an extreme matter to retired peo-
ple in this arel .
JOANNE FARRELL

I think it is definitely a great op·
portunity for us to transfer some
of the overload Crom John Wayne,
Orahge County Airport to El
Toro. We should transfer the en·
. tire operation over there.
-BILL BURKE
Corona def Mar
(J
I can't think of anything less u e·
ful and more redundant than the
air base. Yes. we need a second
airport desperately in Orange
County and I fully support it and I
hope our Congressmen Dana Ro·
hrabacher and Christoph~r Cox
will also. Cox has done a part icu·
larly good job on the airport com·
mittce before this.
ELIZABETH ZERITAS
Newport Beach o ·
As far as a second airport, I think
that would create a lot of danger
with the aircraft already flying out
of John Wayne. So in othe r words,
l don't think they should open an-
other airport.
DA YE GAR RICH
Newport Beach
0
I think this is a tremendous op·
portunity to realize the needed
second airport for Orange County.
I am disturbed by the change of
attitude of the Board of Super·
visors who had said the reason we
couldn't go to El Toro is that the
Marines wou ld not release it. Now
thaa they (may have to) releue it,
the board ii suddenly sayina WO
don't want it, it is goina to be too
expensive to develop.
l cannot imagine having to start
from scratch with new runways at
any other site that would be
cheaper than one that already hu
them installed. As for thc·oosse in
the neighborhood, 1 think the
neighbors would know this would
be far better than the miJitaiy
planes going in and out at all time
o( night, and I think the same
thing probably can be. said of the
economy. Certainfy the area
around LA International is a
booming area and if we want j~
10 get a wonderflll fine second air·
port here wil l not only relieve the
problems at John Wayne, but it
will certainly develop Orange
County. I think it's a tremendous
opportunity.

TOM PENDLE

I happen to be a retired Marine
pilot. I also happened to own a
flight school at John Wayne for a
good number of years, plu.s a com·
mcrcial ai r charter seMce, and it
just basically is that Orange Coun-
ty Airport is not adequate for ·
commcrciaJ aviation of the air car-
rier type.~
H.T. ~NEN JR.
Newport Beach
0
I think with President Ointon's
idea to reduce the deficit, it would
be an excellent idea to close down
El Toro Marine base, thereby al·
lcviating some of the pent-up de-
mand fo r an airport that's cur-
rently at John Wayne

without a contract since July. We,
my fellow officers and 1, have
been told by the city that we arc
lucky to have a job. In these dif·

is true. However. for about 12 of
the last JS years, the city has
shown its "concern" for the mem·

When I was first hired I was in·

arc now third to last in the county.

standout Is making his move
with the Padres' organization.
Et.' Richard Dunn 1'otts Wrbf
t first,
it was a
simple,
o· r f.
season
vocation for Jeff
Gardner to cam a lit·
tie extra income for his family.
Whcp you play ,baseball in the
mmor leagues, you do what you can
to make ends meet with a wife and
rv.o kid at home.
Gardner, former standout in·
rtelder at Estancia High and Orange
Coast College, had ~on awards with
hi glove work. His hatting, though,
needed a little work.
He knew the finer pomu and un·
dcntood the mechania of swinging
the lumber, so Gardner began to
give private lessons in the off·
season.
Has own words of wisdom began
to pay dividends in 1991, when
Gardner, primanly a second base·
man, batted a career-high .292 at
Traple·A Tidewater, and was sub-
sequently called up to the major
league for the first time by the
New York Mets, makmg his debut
with them on Sept. 10 of that year.
Traded
to the San
Diego Pa·
dres last
season,
Gardner
ripped up
the Pacific
Coas t
League
w hi I e
pl aying
for Triple·
A La s
Vegas,
finishing
at .335.
Now, for
the first
time in his
eight-year
pr of e S·
saonaJ ca-
reer,
Gardner ha a legitimate chance to
make the big club coming out of
spring training.
"This was my third winter giving
lessons at Corona del Mar High
School, and I don't think it was an
accident that my last two years have
ken my best years (offensively),"
Gardner aid from Yuma, Ariz.
--While giving lessons, I'm always
inking about hitting. trying to
1tach it, trying to decide what is
cau ing a person to roll over and hit
ground ball or hit fly balls to the
outfield. ·

or Jack Clark, his greatest moment
as a ma1or league baseball player
emerged in.slow motjon. Or at least
it seemed that way.
Most 'Southern Calj.fomia fans re-
member Clark as the slugger who
knocked the. Dodgers out of the
. 1985 National League Championship Series.
Tom Nicdenfuer cenainly remembers. So docs
Tommy Lasorda, who e famou!> decision to pitch
to Clark rather than sntcnt1onally walk him el·
evated the St U>u1<, Cirdsnals in the World Se-
ries.
You remember: .Two out<>, top of the ninth tn·

Oark, who'd gone thro1.1gh many frustrating days
against the Dodger whale a member of the San
Francisco Giants, saw a N1edenfuer fastball on
the first pitch. He launched 11 deep over the
baby-blue left-field wall. about one-thud 1he way
up the bleachers.
Dodger Stadium turned silent.
"When I stepped an10 the batter's box, I
heard absolutely nothing because I was so
locked in mentally," Clark said. "I don't even
remember hearing anybody, even the fans. It
happened real quick, but for me, it loo~ed ILke
it happened in slow motion."
For Lasorda, still the Dodgers' manager, the
queshon -wby did you pitch to Cldrk -will
never go away.
For Oark, 11 was ~ect rC'\'enge.
"(Niedenfuer) had '>truck me out the tune be-
fore on high fastballs, Oark said 'And there
had been other tunes, when I was wub the Ga· ·

or somebody to face me, and rd read in the· pa·
pcrs the next day v.here Lac-.orda ~ould say, 'I

Early bird (Rod Davis)
winds up with honors
LONO BEACH -To under·
line the closeness of the competi·
lion In the Congressional Cup
Match Racing Regatta, the lead
not only changed several times on
the last day, but the previous lead·
er dropped oil the way to fourth
place.
In the end, however, the final
winner was also the early leader
-Rod Davis of New Zealand.
The competition concluded Sun·
day with breezes that were solid
and even blustery, puffing up to 20
knots at times. The conditions
contributed to some real upsets,
starting in the firsl race · when
Davis toppled Bertrand Pace, the
leader alter day three or racing.
In addition, Spain's Pedro Cam-
pos; who went into the day with
just three wins and 12 losses, took
the leading skipper, Roy Heiner of
Holland, down a peg by beating
him by a solid 26 seconds.
Ttte regatta ~ictory came down
to the race between Davis and
Steve Orillon of King Harbor,
Calif: Grillon. one of Davis'
former crew members during
Davis' three1 previous Congres-
sional Cup victories, put up a
fierce baule. •
Davis later commented that,
"Steve just kept coming after me
every inch of tile way."
Davis and Orillon started equal-
ly, and Davis had a 16-second lead
'Gt the first weather mark, ~hich
G rillon whittled down to just 11
seconds at the first le~ard mark.
Davis stretched back up to 16
seconds at the second · wa
mark. but Grillon launched a fero·
cious jibing duel in the gusty 20-
knot winds and was just five sec-
onds behind at the finish.
By winning his race over Grillon
while former leader Heiner lost to
Pace, Davis' victory was 'assured
with one race left to sail. Never-
theless, Heiner put up a game bat-
tle in the last race agaiost Davis
even though he couldn't change
thermal regatta standings.
Davis, the only four-time Con-
gressional Cup winner, was sailing
for the Royal Akarana Yacht Club
of New Zealand, where he is a
resident, although he remains a
U.S. citizen.
Davis will be skippering the
AustraJfan America's Cup cha I·
lenger in 1995, and was a siJver
medalist a.t the recent Olympic
Games in the Star Class

Planning Q garaen .
for the smel I· of it
You can be an artis·t ·through flower· power·
T he glory of a garden lies not only in the beauty of its
flower, but in the variety of its fragrances as well. We
cannot always enjoy our gardens by sight, f:>ut garden
fragrance is with us even when we go indoors and -
often at night it reaches its greatest Jevel of intensity.
In some cases, the fragrance comes from flowers which are •
·barely di~ernible, as is the case with Sweet Olive (Osmantuhus
fragrans) which hides its tiny, intensely fragrant blooms among
the framework of its foliage. In the other extreme, however, is
the gardenia which is,not only one of the most heavily scented
flowers, but also one of the most beautiful. In between are a
wide variety of perfumed performers which are recommended
for planting in every garden.
Having already mentioned Sweet Olive and gardenia, let's
examine them more closely before considering some of the
others. Sweet Olive is a shrub which has long been recognized
by nurserymen as a staple item in the trade, yet very few
gardeners are really familiar with. An upright, dark green shrub
of medium size, it bears in late fragrant to be found anywhere.
One shrub will fill a garden with its fragrance when planted •
upwind. And the branches, when cut, may be taken indoors to
fill a room with perfume . Check with your local California
Certified Nursery Professional about including the Sweet Olive
this spring.
We cannot always
enjoy .our gardens
by sight, but garden
f rag ranee is with us
even when we go in-
doors ...
Gardenias need no special
introduction, but gardeners often
need a reminder that they grow
the tropical beauties outdoors in
California. They are best in warmth
and will take almost all the sun
given, their fragrance being ·
enhanced by heat. Northerly and
along the coast they should be in
warm pockets -against a sunny
wall, perhaps, where they get both
direct and reflected heat, or in a
tub, wl;lich encourages a warmer
soll. Give gardenias plenty of moisture, well-drained and a soil
that has liberal helpings of leaf mold and peat moss added.
Check with your local California Certified Nursery Professional
for the best variety to plant in your area.
The Jasmine as a family offers several possibilities for bloom
and fragran ce and for landscape use. Most can be handled as
either a shrub or as a vine, depending on how you prune. The
blooms are light yellow, creamy white or pinkish. depending on
the variety and almost always intensely fragrant. Ask about the
Angel Wing Jasmine U. magnificum) with large white flowers,
Pinlc Jasmine u. polyanthum) with masses of smaller bloom;
Italian Jasmine o. humile) with its familiar summer crop of light
yellow flowers; and Arabian Jasmine O. Sambac) a small shrub
with masses of creamy white blooms unusually fragrant even for
a Jasmine. Choose your flower.
And then there is Star 1asmine which is not a· true Jasmin~ but
a look alike beauty that has th~ same vine-shrub character. In
late sprin& its deep, green foliage is covered with masses of
wh ite, fragrant pinwheel shaped flowers. These are good to fill a
-raised-bed-aocL.spillmter Jhe top#-or__grown on-a-piUitt-and onto
an eave, or when used a.s a bank planting or grown in a
container.
There are many others to choose frpm : Bouvardia with its
fragrant white trumpets, Victorian Box which fills the night air
with a light, sweet fragrance in both spring and summer; Night
blooming Jasmine witft its tiny insignificant flowers and a very
significant scent and of courSe -roses!

I t doesn't matter if your s .. year-old wields craY.ons
better than you. The fact of
the matter is, you can become an
artist, utilizing your garden as the
canvas.
We're talking color through
flowers. Like an artist, some
gardeners can use annual flowers
to paint the landscape in bold or
subtle strokes, using either bright
hues or muted tones. Simply put,
constant flower color is the
number-one goal for most home
gardeners.
And Goldsmith Seeds, Inc., of
Gilroy, Calif., -one of the
largest wholesale breeders of
hyorid flower seed in the world,
developing and producing flower
seeds for Seed companies and
professional growers -
lntemationalfy -i:arrptovide me--
right annual flowers to help your
garden become a masterpiece.
Did you know that many
principles of color that apply to
art also apply to flower
gardening? For instance, colors
are classified as either warm or
cool depending on the mood they
create. Like the clothes we_wear
to how we decorate our home,
the flower colors we choose for
our ga.rden express the way we
feel abolJt ourselves and ttie
world around us.
At Goldsmith Seeds, our.plant
breeding has resulted in
numerous internati~al flower
awards including 11 medals by
All-America Selections, 1 2
Fleuroselect medals and three All
Britain Trials' awards. We have
the expertise to provide the
flowers and precise colors to
satisfy any home gardener.
Let's say you want to add
warm, dramatic colors like yellow,
orange and red to grab attention
to your garden witfi their vibrant,
compelling looks. Yellows and
oranges usually translate to
marigold) and Goldsmith Seeds
has no fewer than five series of
marigolds. Inca, Perfection, Excel
are taller African marigolds, ideal
for backgrounds. Janie and Aurora
French marigolds are shorter and
can be planted in front of them.
New this year is Janie Deep
Orange, a lively color that will
brighten any ~rden. Two other
orange ~ib1lities include
Golcfsm1th Seeds 1992 .
Fleuroselect gold medal winner,
Mega Orange Star hybrid
impatiens, one of the largest
flowered impatiens available, and
Orange Appeal ~brid geranium,
a 19g1 award winner.
PrimeTime Red Vein, the
newest addition to Goldsniitli
Seeds already-outstanding hybrid
multiflora petunia series, win
serve as the perfect companion
planting to the marisolds. For
another red, new this year is
Accord Rose Blotch pansy. ·
If you want to stick to the same
type of yellow, orange and red,
consider Peter Pan hybrid zinnias
from Goldsmith Seeds. Peter Pan
Flame, Orange and Gold all of
which are award winners from
All -America Selections, will
~rovide all three needed colors.
Or you can try Goldsmith Seeds
Universal hybrid pansies -
Universal Orange, Deep Yellow
and Red.

garden, you'll need the cool,
subdued colors of blue, green and
shades of purple. These colors
also provide a feeling of
spaciousness, helping to make a
small garden appear larger. Blue
and purple flowers usually aren't
•the easi~colors to find, but
Goldsmith Seeds has plenty of
• offerings, particularly with Its
Accent impatiens, PrimeTime or
Ultra petunias and Accord or
Universal pansies. Green is easily
achieved in the garden since most
flower foliage Is that color.
N ot to be forgotten are white,
.gray, silver and cream·
colored flowers. These light colors
are useful almost anywhere, pro·
viding a rest for the eyes between
other colored flowers and adding
a pure effect. ·Whites are also
especially valued by those who
like to enjoy their garden at night.
You can't get mucn purer than
the new color addition to
Goldsmith Seeds Armour verbena
series, Armour While. Other ·
choices include Accent White
impatiens, White Orbit geranium,
Ultra White petunia and
Universal White Pansy.
• Of course, you can create
complementary contrasts by
selecting colors opposite one
another on the color wheel. Two
of the most popular opposite
colors are yellow and blue. Try
Inca Yellow African marigold as a
backdrop to Ultra Blue or
PrimeTime Blue petunias. For
some flower varieties In yellow
and blue, there's everything from
the already-mentioned Accord
and Universal pansy series to
liberty Lavender and Liberty
Yellow hybrid snapdragons or
Saga Yellow and Saga Blue
primulas.
Both the intensity of sunlight
and quality of shadow will aTfea
the reflective quality of colors in
your garden. On an overcast day,
colors will appear more muted.
On a bright, sunny day, colors
will be very vivid. Colors also
change ~rspective. Light, cool
colors enlarge space, while, dark,
warm colors to make areas
appear smaller. Blue and gray
appear (arther away than dark
green and red. The concept of
coordinating colors can be
applied to different seasons of the
year, too.
For example, white and blue
flowers are most appealing if they
bloom in early summer wflen
those colors naturally predom-
inate. Follow these wilh,vibrant
yellow and red flowers timed to
bloom in midsummer. They will
come into their best bloom at this
time, and are most effective at
reflecting the increased starlight.
