Moore The- atre's .inaugural production. I lopes are that the Rodgers and Hammerstein mu ical "South Pacific" -to be presented in mid- July in the 38-year-old theater currently un~r going a Sl.6 million facelift -will brca.the life back.inlo OCC's 36-year-old summer-musical tradition, which was broken last season due to fi. nancial constrainls. "This summer's production of 'South Pacific' will herald an ex- citing new era in the theater's hbtory," OCC president David Grant said in a statement. 0 range County Philharmonic Society . announced Thursday it ls embarking on a 40th :inniversary campaign called "The Preservation of Excellence'' that effectively closes the curtain on a merger with Pacific Symphony Orchestra. "l think they are gone," symphony board pres- ident Janice Johnson said of chances of a merger. "It was disa~pointing to quite a few of us who were on the merger c~mmittce because we thou· ght we were moving very much toward a merge r. Compromises were being reached. ll was a surprise." The Philharmonic Society's $500,000 campaign is intended to bolster its financial health, seek new leadership to guide it into the 21st century and reassert its mission as the leading presenter of internationally renowned orch~stra~ ~nd musicians on Orange County soil. Faced with cash-now p_roblems and a dwindling subscription base, the Philharmonic Society approached Pacific Symphony four months ago· and restarted mc'rgcr tal ks, which previously stalled a couple years ogo. Dackers of a merger between the importer or clas ical music nnd the up-and-coming orchestra sny it would assist both organizations in administration, scheduling and possibly even fund-raising. Steven Lupinacci, Phil harmonic Society board prcsi3cnt, concedeJ th<ll the new campaign signals that merger tglks arc again dormant. "Fo r the time being, we're going to coneentratc on this," he said. "Dut even though it's on the back burner, that's not to say there aren't ways for us to work together." For instance, they are discussing ways to "avoid ·harmful competi1ion" and pool resources for arts cduc:ition programs, he said. The Philharmonic Society's goal is to build a cash reserve in which half of the fun ds would be set aside for concert prcscntarions and the other . half would go to outreach programs. Retiring the organization's deficit would not bcJnrt of the campaign, although thllt is expec1c to h3ppen by the end of the next fiscal year. The $500,000 goal pales when compared to 01her arls organization's multi·million dollar campaigns currently under way. Lupinacci said 1he Philharmonic Society purposely chose a "modest goal" to increase chances that 11 would be met and to take care of immediate needs. Meeting the goal '_Yould allow the Philhnrrrionic Society to avoid having to borrpw funds from the arts center as it has over the Inst two seasons. The campaign goal that most bothers the symphony's Johnson is the part about identifying and attracting new leadership to replace Erich Vollmer, who departed to become executive director of the Los Angele'S·Chamber Orchcs~ra earlier Ibis year. "Once they find a new director, il's over and done,'' Johnson said of a possible merger. .. .. ..-J· -By Matf Cokrr r Editor's Notebook Theater Department chair Alex Golson will direct the pro- duction. "All you need is a little sense of adventure and an agreement to follow the spirit of the old west," he said.
