COSTA MESA -The world watched in·
tcntly as President Dill Clinton and Russian
counterpart Boris Yeltsin held a crucial summit
meeting Inst weekend in Vancouver, C3,0ada,
but Costa Mesa coffee house owner Susan
Strangway might have wondered' if the world
leaders would leave the milk · out or lock up
when they left.

Trudea u," Strangway said of her previous
brush wit h cclebrity.;'Now this is prepy il'npo~,

Current Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on
Saturday met both Clinton and Yeltsin at the
Vancouve r airport, then hosted lunch with the
two presidents al the Strangway residence,
known as the Norman MacKenzie House.
Clinton and '(cltsin later returned for two-and-

"That's pretty mu ch what I thought, that it
was a joke," she said.
Strangway said her parents had to s.o to a
hotel for the weekend to make room for the '
summit, but they were thrilled about giving -up
their mansion fo r the historic meeting. During and shortly after her college years,
Straogway lived in the house -the president's

Abbey Healthcare steps up its bid
to take control of Lifetime Corp. ...
By Tony Cox
Business Edrull
COSTA MESA ~ Escalating an
eight-month bid ~o make an acqui-
sition that w~ICi create the na-
tion's largest home health care
company, Abbey Healthcare
Group lnc. has boosted its offer
for Boston-based Lifetime Corp.
from $220 million to S261 million.
But Lifetime's management
chafed al the sweetened cash-and·
stock offer, accusing Abbey of
continuing to base ils ouyout pro-
posal on a flawed market analysis
and distorted representations of
Boston Company's pe rformance.
Tim Aitken, chief executive with
Costa Mesa-based Abbey, said he
believes the latest offer is strong
enough thot the board members
who are not al so Lifetime execu-
tives would not be able to take the
deal lightly.
"Your shareholders are nol
fools," Aitken said in a letter 10
Lifetime's board. "We believe th at
Lifetime shareholders will find this
price ... extremely auractive."
On Tuesday, Lifetime officials
announced ·that the company's·
board of directors considered the
most recent offer and determined
it to be inadequate price-wise, and
concluded that it was not a firm,
financed bid. However, the board
did nol rule out the prospect of
selling the company.
Lifetime CEO Anthony Reeves
considered the latest offer merito·
rious en ough to call his board to-
ge ther to consi~r the proposal,
but he reiterated his view that
Abbey needs Lifetime more than
Lifetime needs Abbey.
"Clearly, Abbey's pJan is to
come in and position itself, as op·
posed to our shareholders, to re·
ccive the fruit of our long-term in-
vestments and strategic planning,"
Reeves said in a letter sent Friday
to Aitken. "The truly irresponsible
action, to use ' your term, would be
to. take actions that deny our
shareholders the benefits of their
patient investment in the com·
pany.",
