The owner's commitment to the original art deco theme is wonderful. Localed al the end of Newport Pier, the ocean only enhances the overall experience. The interiors, again, meet \Cry high lltandards. P rego's, 11 .Fornaio and Anfoncllo's all are excellent c.x:imples of the "llaltan look." Certainly each one i:.. d1ffercn1 1n the exterior design. You feel you are heading toward Italy, yet 1hc interiors arc totally different in its expression. Prcgo'll ill truly "old ""orld" on the exterior, but its interior i> much more contemporary. The openness 1s ce rt ainly for ''peoplc·w:uching'' and it's successful. The only negative is 1hc bar area. It's just 100 crowded. . II Fornaio is the. newest of the three und is extremely succcssf ul, both in~ide and out. The patios seem to extend the in:i.ide, which rcaJly makes one feel they arc in the "old \\Orld." The circular platform i') "cry succcl.sf ul in making the spaccll more intimJle, yet s111l generates a sen e of the O\enill e>.periencc. The noor IS !iuperb; the re are these li1tle ''niches" )OU look for, where you can really be alone, which is not th~ e<be in rhe other two restaurants. · Only two marks against the design (neither of which Antonello can undo): The auachment 10 the other stories in the mall and the I ck of outside patio dining. Frankly, that entire "plaza" shou ld be for dining. It certainly lacks a human touch, all well as "energy." Mall "niches" -One of th~ most difficult challenges in restaurant architecture is designing a distinct personality in the context of a shopping TaY mall. Frankly, it's virtually impo s1ble. 1 he intcnor dei.ign becomes the architecture I probably i.hould include neighborhooJ commercial centers ~ part of thi') catcgor). alt they both have the same challenge. ·1 ullo Mare's, f i,e Feet Too and l'iret' are three excellent examples of the o"ncr:. ll')ing 10 derive a theme with a \Cry forceful tntc11or design environment. Though the ruling merely reaffirmed several long-standing legal principles, including the "right in time" doctrine, its impact is having unusual consequences thanks 10 a depressed re:il estate mark~. - At issue is the validity of a lease for a property following foreclo!>ure. One would ordinarilv- assume that the lease continues as before. The tenant just makes rent.al pa) men ts. to a new TMI landlprd, the _ •i• foreclosing --lender. The concept is best understood by following t\\O basic principles. One is that le:.i~es and loans, like other liem and encumbrances, are all interests in rear property. The second is that liming is everything Looking for a Job? If you or someone you know arc out of work, you might benefit from being featured in a l'lew Daily Pilot series entitled "The Job Hunt." All that is required is a volun tary agreemcnT of the parties. The process to accomplish this is ~nown as subordination, "hich is key to understanding the significance of Dover. Most lenders require that their loans be protected by a J'osition of superiority above other interests. They generally insist that any leases, "'hethcr or not commenced prior to the Joan, are 'ubordfoate to the superionty or the loan. Unfo rt\lnately, todar. this form of protection is becoming the Achilles heel of lenders. ln the case of Dover, a lease for a commercial building provided that 11 would automatically become subordi nate to any new loan . ,placed on the property. Following a fairly routine and customary process, the ·lender became the new owner by right. Simultaneously, all subordinate, or lesser, interests in the property were extinguished. -A shrewd ihferpretation of this event then led the tenant to denounce the validity or its prior lease. The tenant advised the new landlord that it intended to vacate the property in 30 days since it now considered its tenancy to be mon th·to·month. Just a year old and sllll growing, the park has a very unusual structure at its heart. The Wyoming Territorial Prison, built in 1872, was used to house such notable prisoners as Butch Cassidy and Kinch M cKinney. The prison operated for 31 years, holding more than 1,063 prisoners with only 12 of those women. In 1902 the prisoners were moved to Rowlins, while Laramie got the university, and Cheyenne became the capira l. The prison was donated to the ·university of Wyoming which used it as a stock farm. The cells housed cattle, and the prison broom factory became a sheep barn. In 1986, the state declared the prison Wyoroing Territorial Park, and a impressive restoration began. Reopened in June 1992, the prison now provides an authentic look at the wa>' justrce was handled in the old West. Through sophlst1car&d d1spla)'S and authentic exhibits, )Ou'll learn about frontier law and 1ust1ce, women's equality and other Western lore. You may tour the facility with a well-versed guide, or on your O'v\ n. ~ The park is also prepared for • --the hungry. Dine on Buffalo Burgers, Rocky Mountain Oysters and Prison Chili at the Roundup in Wyoming Frontier Town, or have a sit-dowQ lunch at the 100-year-old Horscbarn Dinner Theatre. For a lively evening, .. don't miss the nightly musicaJ performances served-up with an enormous western dinner. Along with an historic U.S. Marshal's exhibit housed beneath the theater, there is a range of KIDNEY DISEASE GET THE .FACTS ONE OUT OF EVERY FIVE AMERICANS WITH DIABETES WILL DEVELOP KIDNEY FAILURE It;_ interesting shops in Frontier Town. look for the working blacksmith, the print shop, mercantile store and Wagon Wheel Workshop where local craftspeople demonstrate weaving, soap-making, candlemaking and saddlemaking. Stagecoach rides, pony rides and musical events keep the action rolling. The Wyoming Territorial Park continues to expand with a Plains Indian camp, mountain man rendezvous site and native interpretive center in the works. • Laramie, affectionately known as the "Cem City of the Plains," has revitalized its historic downtown. Jacques Restaurant, housed in an 1870's building, offers some sophisticated cuisine (or very reasonable price. Museums are in historic buildings, and the American Heritage Center is helpful in searching for relatives. The Wyominw'Colorado Excursion Train is just the ticket for train buffs. Pulled by a 1953-vi ntage diesel ~ngine, known as Big Red, the 1938 Streamliner departs from Laramie daily to the high plains of Southern Wyoming. Passengers may sit in reserved seats in a typical rail car ($26). or enjoy the luicury of a first-class parlor coach ($38). C hampagne, sodas and appetizers are served in the handsome parlor cars. All fores include a brown-bag lunch and soft drink. My f ~vorite spot to enjoy the breathtaking scenery is in one of the two open gondolf! cars wiih iron sides and bench seating. The 108-mile rol.lnd trip takes six hours. As we passed Vee Bar Guest Ranch (the rrain stops on Wednesday to pick~up guests). welcoming riders fanned out along the wagon trail. Cheyenne and Laramie are within driving distance from Denver, and trains stop at each city, but the easiest way to visit t.he)(:! two nearby (45 minutes apart) cities Is by air. . The famous Vedauwoo (VEF-dah-voo) rock formations are located between the two cities and are worth a half-a-day visit. If you're a rock climber, this is the place. If not, take a picnic and rela~ under an aspen grove. Nearby Curt Gowdy State Park is loaded with recreational opportunities. On Happy Jack Road sits a B&B ranch house run by Taydie and Kent Drummond that will capture your fancy. The Nantucket-type farmhouse with barns, is set against a backdrop of blue-tinted hills. The cost is $75 a night per couple which includes an enormous breakfast., Other meals are by request, (307) 634-6042. little i'.merlca Resort in ' Cheyenne offers a golf course, pools and handsome full-service hotel.
