COSTA MESA -After spending
her childhood in 20 different foster
homes and struggling to achieve a
stable life, Debbie Murray finally felt
settled. She was successful and had
two wonderful daughters.
daughters started running with gangs.
"I h;id to fight so hard to be a good
citizen. To have a daughter who
wanted to throw her life away was just
horrible," Mu rray said.
Murray waged a five-year battle for
her daughter, finally breaking through
her resistance when she was a junior
in bigh school. But along the way,
Murray learned how difficult it is for a
common citizen to get help when it
comes to gangs.
individuals have already promised
support and Murray hope~ to start a
newsletter, produce c:ible television
shows and serve as a window to the
public, showing what resources arc
available.
Murray is most proud that thi~ 1s a
citizens' effort.
"We can't rely on civic leaders; 11
has to be the citizens," she said. ·The
problem is too big and there is too
much to do to rely on go,ernment to
do it alone."

UPPER CASTAWAYS - About 600 local Boy Scout:., Cub Scouts and
Wcbelos attended a three-day CampoTce during the wce"-end, an event here
modeled after a national Boy Scout Jamboree' thJt brought some 50,000
scouts and a sea of tents to Newport Beach 40 years ago.
The scouts at this \\Cckend's Camporee plJyed some of the same gJmcs
and had some of the same training as tho)e at the 1953 Jamboree. Song
books from the 1953 event were reprinted fo r the Camporee, and religiou!I
books from that era were used at church services on Sunday morning. A
campfire ring fro m the original Jamboree wa) also used at the Camporcc.
Some aspects of the 1953 Jamboree could not be duplicated. Then-Vice
President Richard Nixon gave a speech to the scouts that year, and events
like shotgun shooting were scrapped. And much of the land the scouts
tamped on, including the land under Fashion blanc, has since been de\el·
oped. The Irvine Co. allowed the scouts to:_use the 56-acre Upper Castaways
·site, which hJs been earmarked for preservatio n, for the Camporee.

NEWPORT BEACH -Sunny,

Lifeguard Craig Farmer said there
were about 30 rescues on both

Elliot is not a bad guy. Actually,
by most barometers, he's kind of a
good guy who's made a mistake.
And continues to make others.
Elliot met Marcy one year ago

twists involved.
Usually, it's the Super Bowl champi·

And mually, ·it's No. 336 in

this year's Mr. Irrelevant to I
lose a great deal of his ir·
relevancy.
Nevertheless, Irrelevant
Week fe>under Paul Salata of
Newport Beach says this edition
will be plenty irrelevant.
And, aftet further review by
the Irrelevant Weck staff, it has been
discovered ttlat the Tampa Bay Bue·
cancers, not the Super Bowl champion
Dallas Cowboys, hold the rights to the
224th selection in the April dr:ift via a
past transaction involving the Cowboys.
According to Rick Odioso, Director of
Public Relations for Tampa Bay, the
Cowboys traded defensive back Garry
Lewis to th~ Buccaneers for a
lale·rounasc1ection in August,
presumably round nine.
Since this year's draft is only
eight rounds, the Cowboys will
get the Buccancer1' selection
in the eigfltl\ round, which is
the seventh pick. Tampa B.ay
will move down 21 picks to No.
224, which \\-ill be the lowest·
numbered selection in the history of Ir·
relevant Week.
"He's No. 224 in the draft, but No.
XVlll in our hcans," s:iid Salata, slight·
ly miffed that the NFL dropped from 12
rounds to eight this sea.son without con·
su it ing him.
"\Ve had great success with last year's
honoree, Mau Elliott of the Washington
Redskins, at No. 3361" said Sala~ who
will make the lur draft announcemeai'
in New York.
"The pressure will be on 224 to fall his
shoes and acave his mark on Irrelevant
Weck."
Upon his arrival at the Balboa Bay

The awarding of the LOwsman Trophy

There was certainly no tide deviation along

OCC's JV 8 shell painted the 2.000-meter

A.-Even though partner almost

What is your opening bid?
A.-Jt is hands like this that give
five-card majorites nightmares. It's
easy to open one heart, but what do
you do should partner respond one

Partner opens the bidding with one

A.-This hand is. by our Stan·
duds. a smidgeon weak for a two·

two suits unstopped. including a
weak doubleton in one. our choice
would be to ra111e partner t.o two
