school and college sys tem.
"Those of us Who arc involved in the arts feel
terrible about the tutbacks," he said. ''Young
people are getting a onc·dimensional education."
After earning bachelor's and master's degrees
from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J.,
Raub was involved with church music and then
began a sheet music busine~. After a temporary
teaching assignment at Whittier College, he began
his teaching career in 1968 at Saddleback
Co~unity College.
Raub, who has twice directed the prestigious Los
Angeles Bach Festival, is unsuce of his retirement
plans, but plans-to continue making music. "His-
talent and his thoughtful and sensitive personality
have made him an enormous favorite with
performers and audiences," Grant sajd. "He will be
a tough act to follow." •
But cqllege President Dave Grant said the cuts
arc__onjy temporary. ''He's a marvelous person and
he's built a wonderful program and it won't faJI
away," .Grant sa id. "At the moment, we 're looking
for every dollar there is to k.eep the lights on."
Raub, an educator for 25 years, began his musical
training at age 4 studying violin and piano at the
urging of his father, a violinist and educator. In high
school, Raub joined tbe school choir and was
entHralled with the possibilities of the human voice.
Apan from the sheer exhilaration that comes
lr m a musical performance, Raub said the artistic
exchange between himseJf and his student~ has
made his teaching career worthwhile. "Hearing from
the students what th<>-Se experiences meant to them
has been the most rewarding part of it," he said. •
"Students have told me that it has truly changed
"That's when l made up my mind to go into

RUNWAY • From A1
·member when the landmark 1985
airport noise agreement was
signed, is skeptkal about the air·
. port's reasons for studying runway
ext«1sioo.
"I think it's just a smoke·
screen,". Heather said. "We've
done really well in doing away
with the monster ai rplanes. This
would just· nullify everything that
we've been fighting fo r."
The airport's main runway -
the only runway long enough fo r
comrnerciarflights -is 5,700 fee t
long, a relatively short runway.
Runways at Ontario and Long
Beach airports are between 8,000
and 10,000 feet long.
Wicrcioch points out that air-
port noise limits will remain in cf·
feet even if the runway is length·
ened. "Regardless of the runway
length, the airline carriers must
meet our noise limits," she said.

Road and one that would basically mirror the present Newport
Coast Drive.
"The one I wanted would closely parallel (the iollway)," he
said. "But 1 won't get that because it will tde tolls away." ../ Cox acknowledged that was true. Officials used projections of
money collected from tolls on Newport Coast Drive to sell more
than $1 billion in municipal bonds last March.' The bonds arc
needed to construct the road.
"F,ifty cents _is significaql, believe it or not,'' Cox said. "The
money collected from those tolls is what the investors expect to
receive."
Sansone as well as residents and business owners in Corona
dcl Mar say the opening of Newport Coast Drive has signifi-
cant!~ lessened the traffic <Jn Coast Highway. They believe a 50
cent toll will send the traffic back.
Cox disagrees, saying much of the traffic that is currently
traveling Coast Highway from the South County will ultimately
use the Sal_'! Joaquin Hills tollway.
