SHE IS
Donna Kahle, an Orange County
nutive and Irvine resident who is owner
of Coro.na del Mar Barber Shop on
East Coast Highway. Kahle bought the
shop, then known as Crown Barber
Shop and owned by Cbuck .Eaille, JO
years ago. She celebrated her 10-year
business anniversary on May 1. Eadie
ran Crown Barber Shop for about 25
years, and his predecessor at the
location ran a barber shop for at least
five years. "At least 40 years, there's
been hair foiling on the floor here,"
Kahle said.
All ·FEMALE CREW
Kahle has headed up the shop's same
three-woman hair-cutttng crew -herself and
long-time employees Peggy Honeywell and
Deborah Samuels -for seven years. It took
cu tomers some time to get used to the idea of a
woman barber, but the shop has become
increasingly popular over the years. "We have a
lot of fun," Kahle said. "It's like a sit-com
sometimes. We've never had any complaints.
Rather than have a grouchy old man cut their
hair, it's nice to have a pleasant lady taking care
of tb em."
A SECOND CAREER
Prior to getting into the barber business, Kahle
had a more scereotypically female career -
nursing. But she wanted to change professions,
and a friend encouraged' her to capitalize on her
hair-cutting talents. "l had :ilways
fooled around wilh hair," she said. "I
used to braid niy dad's hair and put it
in pin curls while h~ sat and rood the
paper." K?hlc got th_c necessary
training and credentials, then bought a
barber shop in San Diego in 1978. Two
years later, she sold that shop in order
to take time out 10 stan her family. She
h3s a husband, Omar Kahle Jr., ond 11
12-ycor-old daughter. By 1983, she wos
ready to get back in the barber
business.
A COMMUNITY INSTITUTION ···································································· Kahle said she enjoys the role a
barber shop plays in a community.
"'You see children grow up and go away
to college," 5hc aid. "You ee
customers die, or move away and come back. It 's
been really nice to be a part of people's lives
over the years. J'm going 10 shoot for another 10
years. Time fl ies when you're having fun."

Buonorigo would have preferred heading
into the CIF Division Ill playoffs next
Friday, but despite a 3·0 loss to Trabuco
Hills in Pacific Coast League play, there
was plenty to build upon heading into
the eliminations.
"With the exception of a couple of
base-running mistakes we played pretty
well," said Buonango. "Out, we learned
from them ai:id I'm pleased with this
team."
Costa Mesa, 6-4 and third in the PCL,
finished the regular season at 12·8 after
Trabuco recehed a one-ru'n gift in the
first inning and )Cored two more in the
sixth (one earned) to improved to 8·2 in
league play.
Trabuco pitcher Brianna Burkman
struck out 11 and wa lked just one in
going the di!.tance, allowing just one run-
ner as far as third base.
Thilt came in the fifth inning with
Costa Mesa down, J-0.
Jennifer Long, who had th e.. game's
only extra b3Se hit, led off with a double
to the fence, but after the next biltter
struck out, the Mustangs tried to drag
bunt.. Long to third.
It worked ... only it worked too well,
and Long wa) caught off the bag as ~he
rounded third.
That play hurt, but it wasn't kept in
focu) because Trabuco retaliated \\ith
t\\O insurance mar"-erli in the sixth to put
it away.
