D OCTOR, GET ME AN OPERATOR -
Despite what you may have inferred
here the other day, there's a highly ef-

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.
Who ~ays so? George Hoag II himself, that's

Reac11ng promptly to Fri-
day's item about the "inter-
minable taped message"
greeting calle~ to the ho~p1-

chairman emeritus said it's a
state-of-the-art service. He in-
\1 1cd me to inspect the opera-
tion, and promised that I'd
meet real live people behind
all that automation.
He said the switchboard re-
ceives more than 3,000 calls
in any given 24-hour period
-and that dol!°sn't even In-
clude the direct dialings, of
which there nrc more than a considerable
:imount. .
OK. I'll 'l'>lt the hospital again -as long as
they don't put me on hold. And no more nee-
dle'>. plca~e.
(It ~hould be noted that Hoag's call was di-
aled directly, and wa!t answered promptly and
personally. No lengthy in'>tructions about
pre~1ng buuon!I, but then I ain't no busy hos-
pital. Nearly 15 )e:ir~ ago, a n editor decreed
that a high-tech an~"ering machine be in-

turn the danged thing on. Sure missed a lot of

Among delegate!> from Denmark was beauti-

for the balance of the Balt ic bloc was a beauti·

The cclebf"jt1on wasn't all creamed herring
and akvavi1. There w:i a solemn moment
when I was a'>ked to 'itand for the Norwegfan
national anthem. The tune sounded familiar,
and I soon realized that ~omeonc was slipping
me the hornet.I helmet . The song was a Nordic
ver\ion of "Home on the Range," with "fjord"
\ubstituted for "home." These Norwegians are
fun·loving people.
Even though I'm of Latvia n descent, initia lly
I felt as out-of-place a!t a ham in a Jewi!th deli.
Uut fun -loving hoste!ts Rita Sprinkel soon rem-
edied that by crooning another ethnic melody.
It was a wng she said was learned at the knee
of l:.dd1e Fbher. Turned ou t to be "Hava

said, "a Norse of a different color."

Food and Wane Center, but some of the 480
guests m1ght've been unclear on the concept.
What was the nature of their offense?
Well, in full view of the Cancer Society
folil.s, thc\e n1cot1ne-Ma1ned wretches (who,
me?) committed a Oagrant no-no. They tried
to sneak a smoke.
Mercifully, they were apprehended before
they could befoul the atmo!lphere . A roving

Riss, quickly snuffed out the attempt, and the
sinners were sentenced to spend the rest of the
evening nt several dozen refreshment stands .

THOMPSON: Looking back on a football great from '48
From 81
h w3S ditto from his '47 teammate, All·Sun\Cl
League guard Bill Cl:irk, who said, "He was a
natural tHhlcte. He could have done grent tbing!I
in college."
A native Co!tta Mesan, Thompson firl>t brot..e
into the !>tarting 'ari.ity lineup in 1946 with Bee
exponent s. He only weighed 155 pounds, bu1
even1ually moved uhead of a 6-foot-3, 200·pound
end named Bob Killefcr.
And he could play mol>t any position . In fact,
he played at tailback and end in '47. He al-.o
vaulted on the track team and played v:mity
bns'keball.
Thompson, who played his first two gnd )earl>
under Wendell Pickens and the third under
Irwin, said, ''They were good coaches and I
maintain a lot of respect for both of them."
Under Picken , 1t was the old hort·punl fo r·
mation. Out Irwin brought the modernized T·
formution in '48 and Thompson loved the
change.
He said, "I favored th e new T-form:11ion over
the short·punt. J found it easier to adjust and it
allowed quickness. Then Al Irwin would some·
times switch me from one end to another to con·
fuse the opponents."
Mos! players of his time dreaded the old leath·
er helmets that lact..ed f3ce gear, but not Thomp·
son. "I liked the old helmets," he said. "And I
never got hurt," he added, but that wa • perhaps,
due to hb uncanny elusiveness.
Of all past rivals, Thompson always hact the
adrenalin going for Santa Ana and Huntington
Dcach, "because it always seemed they were our '
rivals."
