T oday we'd like to discuss organ recitals.
Not the kind played on the Mighty
Wurlitzer, but the discordant rumblings
from our innards that plague us during t~e
night. While they haven't the talent to perform
a Bach Fugue, organic functiom play a signifi-
cant role in our lives, and those of our mates.
Especially the first thing in the morning when
husbands and wives exchange reports on what
kind of a night they endured.
These marital organ recitals grow longer and r: more varied with the years. • I al Aside from the off-key rrn·
derings of a dyspeptic tummy,
or the drum roll of a pound·
1ng heart, there are scores of
weird nocturnal woes. A das·
sic example is Dry Mouth, a
mid night seizure that makes
your mouth feel parched as
an abandoned watering hole.

. Beginning Wednesday, June 2, you 'll notice
a few chang~ in our channel line-up. ew
federal law requires cable operators to carry~
all local broadcast stations setving their mar-
kets. These adjustments are nece&5al)' for us
to comply with the nav federal requirements.
Local newspaper guides won't reflect these
changes Jor the next week. ~lease ref er to the
· channel line-up here for current channel
positions and titile schedules. To rilake sure
you receive the line-up, we'll also be sending
you a copy in t)te mail. ,
· At Dimension, we'.re responding to these
new federal requirem~nts in a Way that is
least disruptive to our customers, while
continuing to offer the same hig!t~W-
. · mix_ of p~g services. .
Thank .you for your ~ence and

1978.
"There hasn't been a new
knecboarder since then," Sharp
said. "Nowadays if kids want to do
something different, they iet into

Sharp ancnded San Diego

school's surf team. And his talent
eventually landed him a spot on
the star-studded National
Scholastic Surfing Association
team in 1982.
That team consiftctt of such
stars as Tom Curran, Chris

Holland, Scott Farnsworth, Gary

themselves later as professional
surfers.
S~rp was able to travel to
Hawaii and Australia as a member
o( that team and he won the U.S.
kneeboarding championship and
came in second place for the
world title in 1982.
After college, Sharp planned to
go into real estate. But he got a
call Crom Surfing Magazine, where
he had contributed free-lance
articles as part of the national surf
team. .
They offered him a job.
"I thought it was to sell ads," he
said. "But they had this editor
position and 1 said, 'Hey, I'll do

He took a position as editorial

California Redwood Association
has compiled these useful tips
from rhe pros to help
homeowners plan or build a
quality deck project.
r. Place the deck in the best ·
location. Consider the slope of
the yard, sun exposure during the
changing Jeasol').S and the location
oi fixed underground utilities for

building guidelines and
re)trictions are and research the
procedures for obtai ning permits.
4. Select quality materials.

determine this, position the board

. 1 l . Use 16-penny bOic nails for
2·inch redwood deCk boards. Nall
at a slight angle for extra holding
power. .
14. When applying redwood .
decking. provide a 'A·inch ·
minimum space,between boards
to allow for drainage and the
natural expansion and contraction
of ~ood as it wets and dries. A
16·penny nail is·a good spacer.
~ s. Predrill nail holes at the
ends of redwoe><l boards to avoid
splittin~. Center large knots and

Supports must be securely

work with natural redwood .
because it is li~tweight and easy
to saw and driTI.
5. Choose lumber that won't
warp and split. Redwood Shrinks -
and swells less than other woods.
so decking boards go down flat '
and they stay flat.
6. Specify the right grade of
lumber for the job. Economical
knot-textured garden grades of
redwood are fl~ choice.for
decks and most other outdoor
projects. Use kiln-dried
architecturar redwood for areas
requiring tight joints, such as
outdoor shelves, cabinets and
detail work.
7. Before building, toat all
redwood lumber with a quality
water repellent finish containing a
m1ldewcide and ultraviolet light
inhibitor. 'Before finishing, wOod
surfaces should be' dean and dry.
Brushing is the best method for
applying finishes.
8. Use stainless steel, aluminum
or top-quality hot-dipped
galvanized nails, fasteners and
hardware. Inferior fasteners will
react with redwood 's natural,
decay-resisting extractives and will
cause stains.
9. Use concrete footings for the
best support for redwood deck
framing. In many areas building
codes require footingt to extena
below the frost line.lops of
footings should extend six inches
abcM ground and should be
pitched outward to prevent water
coUecting and to inhibit decay
and Insects.
1 O. Use additio~I joiSIS and .•
larger beams to handle
concentrated loads ol planters,
spas and oth~r ~avy objects.
Local building codes should be
eonsulted regarding structural
regulations.
11 . In areas where posts meet
footings or where fedsers are
attached to the house, use
all-heartwood redwood. Prefinilh -
