SPACE TAKEN? -Don't get me
wrong? I jus'l love livina in The
Greater Ncwpon Beach Resort Area, but
there's something I should've brought along
from dre streets of San Oemente.
I should've brought a parking space.
Local
Scene
Unlike my digs in San
Calamity, the structure I'm
renting in Coronary del Mar
d6csn't include a private
garage. There's an alcove
off 1he alley, but it won't
accommodate my
non-compact c?lr. And so I
must take to the streets,
being careful 001 10 parlc
there on days designated for ·
street-sweeping purposes.
After paying four tickets, at
$22 per; I'm finally getting
the poljce department's
m~ssage. ~ ,
And bere's another message:
On weekends, especially when there's a
holiday in progress, never, never leave the
sp3ce you were lucky enough to get in the
first place.
I learned this the
hard '\.\3Y on Sunday,
during the height or
Memorial Day
weekend festivities.
Seems that Crystal
the Cat was screaming
for brunch -but.
alas the cupboard was
bare. And so I
Ah, th~ joys .of

whipped down to the
nearest market, less than five minutes away,
and guess '"hat I found upon return?
Nothing, that's what. Nothing but
bumper-to-bumper vehicles, with others
circling buzzard-wise, ready to pounce.
Ah. the joys o f dweliing within a Frisbee's
throw of the beach.
' Jn my fc,ered mind, I could almost hear
Crystal's yowltngs reaching crescendo pitch.
Around and around the block I went fo .
pursuit of the elusive space, then widening
the circle to include most of the village this
side of Goldenrod Bridge. There's a Yiddish
expression for this exercise in futility. It's a
"nechtigcr tog .. (literal translation: A nightly
day; hence an impossibility, an absurdity.)
Finally on Heliotrope, within five blocks
of home, it happened. A ni~ lady was
getting ready to pull out~ I stopped and
waited, backing up traffic like I was getting
a $200 haircut. Hallelujah, the cat was
saved!
Hours later, I went to retrieve the vehicle.
And there on the windshield was a notice
scrawled on orange paper. it read: 0 This
space is reserved, you (expletive deleted!).
.Try it again, and you'll be towed away."
And how was youJ' holiday weekend?

Businessman · pleads not llUlllY to ·$3 million real estate scamn
By LoriAnn Basheda
SW! Wroet
NEWPORT BEACH -A local businessman
pleaded nol guilty 10Jay to charges that he
:;windled millions of dollars from more than
f\\-O dozen victims. )Ome of \\horn were high
school pals.
Facing 28 counts of grand theft, David Cook
is being held on $250,000 bail. Also facing
charges is his bu incss partner Anthony Veltre,
41, who is out on $25.000 bail
Cook was apparently about to be arrested by
Riverside County police for purportedly
cheating his children out of $35,000 in ~upport
payments before Newaon Beach detectives and
the California Deputment of Real Estate
caught up with his alleged investment, \Cam
l>Cveral months aao at his American Federal .
Mortgage Corp. on MacArthur Bouleva rd.
It was the second time the 48-year-old man
was taken into custody on cha rge of fraud in
the last decade. Cook \\BS reportedly arrestt:d
scveraJ years ago after con~ng some high
school pals to invest in a banking scam, but
escaped jail time after agreeing 10 pay
restitution.
This time, police said, Cook allegedly lured
investors by advertising in local newspapcts
and hustling old and new acqun1otanccs -
Lncluding his own attorney.
Police believe Cook and Veltre bilked at
least 28 investors out of npproxim:uely SJ'
million over the p3st )Uc yellrs. ·
Unfortunately, Fischer said. Cook's bank
accounts appear empty, leading pohce to '
believe he squandered nil the mOl\e) he
allegedly-scammed to keep up his opulent
lire t)le.
Both Cook and Veltre face up to 12 )Cars in
priso'n i( eonvictcd. A pretrial has been
scheduled for june 11 :ii Harbor Munic1p11I
Court.
