could attest to 1hat fact.
Considering it was a weekd:iy. it
wasn't officially summer, and children
arc still in school, there was a pretty
good crowd at the shore.
ln the first really w:irm weather of the
early summer season, lifeguards at
several beaches reported a fairly .active
day. Huntinaton Beach lifcgu:irds said
they evcri brought a few extra guard on
duty to help ensure public safecy.
Ncwpon Beach lifeguards estimated a
crowd of 20,000 to 30,000 people at city
beaches, with Huntiniton Beach
estimating S,000 people and Bolsa Chica
checking in wtth about 1,000.

gathering for
Newport Beach .
There are few
traditions in the
community that
pre-date an aged
bottle of 1COtch,
let alone nearty
five decodes. The
early days of the
ball, held at the
Balboa Bay Oub
then and now, at·
tracted the mav-
ericks, rogues,
and ~tars of the Orange Coast. Ac-
tually, that i~ pretty much the
~ame today. But the names, the
faces and look has changed.
John Wayne always said that the
Opening of the Season Party was
hts ra .. orile. Perhaps it was bc-
cau>e It signaled the official start
of the ummer, the time he cber·
i~hed on the old Wild Goose. Pcr·
hap 11 was just because his cro-
nies gathered around, had a few
drinks, told a few lies and all re-
joiced at their good fortune to be
celebrating the start of summer in
a wonderful place the hordes of
humanity had not discovercd ... and
ruined
Rumor has it that Boprt court-
ed Bacall at one of these affain.
They •ay that the wonderful char-
acter actor Andy Devine never
m1!lsed one. Dorothy Lamour and
_Victor MacugJen always came
with Dorothy Yardley, and Joey
Bnhop would bring friends acrou
the channel from his Lido Isle res·
