Seniors prepare for
bittersweet farewell .,, ... ,,
T o one student the day will serve as the
missin& link in • are•• chain o(
accomplishment. assembl~ toecthcr OYCr
a painstakin1 period ot time.
To another, the day will be a gymnast's vault,
catapultina him hcadlon& into an excitin& new
world.
Yet another may view his araduation as the
first day of the rest or his Uf e, the end or an
era, the besjnninl of 1 lifetime, where love and
loss settle on the boundary of each and every
day.
But common to all, the day of June 22, 1993,
has been eagerly anticipiued.
I, personally, have awaited gTaduation with •
baited breath for years. 1 bad eyed the
motionless clock, hoping with all of my heart
that the hands would rapidly rotate and that
the day would culminate and another would be
ushered in with the rising sun.
But as the very day of my desire approaches,
an air of reluctance has filtered into my person.
A plethora of nervous qu~.tions has enveloped
me. Will this be an end or a beginning? Will my
high school days ring -.ell in the years thnt
follow? Will my hard earned friendships last
the tests and hardships yet to come?
1 have seen similar change of thought in
many seniors throughout this school year. As I
stepped onto campus in September, an _
caecmess was apparent. Most senfor:s_wcrc lost
in blind anticipation of the summer day, in
which dressed in cap and gown, they would .
commence high school and enter the so-called
"real world".
But as time has progressed, many have
realized the frightening f1nality of lhc·situation.
This is indeed our last year as high school
students, as simple dependents, as a tight
fellowship, for come tomorrow we will be
venturing our separate ways. whether our
destination be abroad, a college campus, or the
work force.
S o, we find ourselves caught S9mcwbcrc
between eagerness and reluctance, clinging
to rclatfonshipg by malting misguided promises
in hopes to solidify a foun~ation of love and
friendship built throughout the years. We tell
on another that we will always be together, no
mall.er how far apart we arc or how long we arc
gone, but we know deep inside that there arc
no iuarantces. But, nonetheless, we try to
s.alvaac our remaining days in hopes that it
mipt make some profound diff ercnce in &he
transition years. •
At tbe same time, we look rorwa,J.i; attempt
to plant a fertile seed for the future. We look
ahead to the borizon, envisioning greener
pastures,~• is time to move on, to leave behind
the trivial nuances of teenage life and accept an
active role in the shaping of the world. Let it be
known that it i.s our 1~neralion's turn to carry
the weight or the world.
What is left of our early years is merely a
single day, the day of our graduation, the In.st
day we will all be as one.
And when WC return I multitude Of
entrepreneurs, lawyers, businessmen, actors,
journalists, athletes, doctors, writers, and
teachers, we will have much to recollect about.
for our years together have been fruitful. We
will recall certain classroom experiences, certain
reckless teenage nigjlts, cenain games won nnd
lost, and certain dances. Each student will have
his certain memories, the ones that mean the
most to him.
But most or all we will have our last day
together to remember. We will recall the
smiles, the tears, the laughs, the shouts or
excitement, the gamut of emotions we ran on
that fateful day. We will remember the joy and
sorrow as we peruse thousands of photographs,
taken by proud parents.
Lastly, we will clearly remember our last
cvcnin& t<>cether, our spectacular grad ni&ht,
the culmination or a vibrant, face-paced period
or our lives, when we celebrated as the Oass or
1993 ror the very last time.
