Issues and answers for today's senior citizens.
Here's ths scoop
on the overload
of information '
·A t the conclusion of a recent physical exam, my
doc1or lookefJ alllrmingly solemn. Bracing
myself for the worst, 1 quavered, "Is it "
any1h1ng fat:il, doctor?"
"h's too new a disease to have any mortality
figures yet," he exclaimed.
"But you're going to have to change you r lifestyle"
he added, with the funeral expression for lopping off
the nectars of life.
The diagnosis: Information Overload, also known
59 and
Holding
as Communication Callouses. The
1ran!.mittors in the brain become
clogg~ wit h too many factoids,
causing rapid eye movements,
ground molars, and burping. Dr.
Jones explained our nervous
sy~1cms are not designed to handle
the tidal wave of stressful
inform.ation drowning us tod
0
ay.
"I'm surprised you'd overload
your circuits," he scolded. I
confessed 1 was only trying to stay
young and mentally alert by
kee ping up with the important
issues of the day -such as
whether Woody Allen is really
guilty or not; or, if Princess Di has a secret lover.
"St::i\ ing informed is exhausting," l sighed. In ,
addition to being up on international affairs,"political
gridlock, gossip and new taxes, I have to cope with
all the !.luff in the morning mail. Like the 15-page
booklet from my gas company on how to turn off the
wa1er heater during an earthquake. Or a complicated
document from our financial adviser on how long we
can expect our money to last with inflation. If J
hadn't studied his report, J wouldn't have realized
my lw!>band and.I are going to be broke soorier than
we 1hought.
Dr. Jone!. gave me an informative lecture on ~II
the dire things that could happen to me if l didn't
change my ways, which only added to my warehouse
of information. He then put me on a starvation diet
-no news for
two weeks -not
even a story on a
Tµpperware party
in our local
throwaway paper.
Also no radiO or ..
TV; a virtual
blackout. My
husband joined me
in this torturous
fast to be
· sup1>9rtive even
worse for him since he has to have se"'ral news
updates during the night on cable TV.
Mornings without a newspaper were agony. Not
knowing what's going on, I imagjned the worst. With
all the leaks coming from the White House about
marital fight , suppose the Clintons broke up?
Would Hillary have to move her desk from the
Executive East Wing to the secretarial pool
downstairs?
In the cour e of my speculations, I groaned, "for
all we know, the doctors might have discovered a
fa1al new disease we,shouJd be worrying about."
"That's trivial" my husband snapped. "What's
really important, can the Dodgers cut it next
Sunday?"

The original pews and pump organ are still in
the small redwood church -the oldest

A new chapel was built next door in the 1960s.
But Sunday school cla!>sC!. and community

Ne~ laser mciy be answer
in bat~le against baldness
Surgeons m.iy soon be
wielding lasers in the
continuing battle against
bJldne!>S if preliminary findings
of current studies on laser hair
transplantation remain
consistent.
The \ 1Jbility o( using lasers
to successfully perform hair
transplants became possible
due to the recent development
of a new, high-powered jaser
that can emit !>hort bur!>tS o(
energy, according to Dr.
Laure.nee David, president of
the lnternationJI Society of
Cosmetic Laser Surgeons, who,
in conjunction \\ ith
world-renowned hair
transplant speciJlist Dr. Walter
Unger, pioneered the laser
studies last September.
Although attempts to use
lasers in hair replacement have
been made in the past, they
were un·succcssf ul due to the
type of la)er used, David sJid. ·
Unger said the most obvious
benefit in using the new' laser
was a marked decrease 1n the
amount of bleeding during and
after the procedure.
"Because blood vessels arc
!>eJled as laser incisions are
made, laser hair
transpl~mtation is an almost
bloodless operation," he said.
"As a rc!>ult, post-operative
crusting can be minimal or
non-e\IStC'nt, thus improving
the immediate appearance.
In addition, Unger and
DJvid iound the new laser
advantageous in performing
minigrafting, the most rapidly
growing technique in cold
steel hair transplantation that
places small grafts containing
two to six hairs into
smaller-than-usual hole) o; slits
made with a scalpel blade.
"The main attraction of this
type of grafting is that the
characteristic transitional 'doll's *
head' appearance of hair
transplanting can be greatly
minimized or entirely
eliminated, 11 Unger said. "Slit
sr<ifting is generally mofe
successful in avoiding· this
Jppearance than round
grafting. However, a number
of problems ca n oocur with slit
grafting that laser use can
ulleviate." ...
These problems include graft
elevation or depression,
ingrown hairs, and hair
compression -where
transplanted hair is
compressed into very dense,
unsightly lires, particularly in
patients with coarse, dark hair.
Unger said such problems·
arc due to the narrow incision
lines produced by scalpel
blades. Because the new laser
produces slits that can be
one-to-two millimeters wide,
all of the above problems can
be alleviated or eliminated, he
said.
To date, 46 patients have
been investigated fusing tbe
state-~f-the-art technique
which is still so new, it is
currently only being offered in
Southern California, Atlanta,
Toronto, Australia, Germany,
Hong Kong and Sweden.
Only members of an ISCLS'
study group have been
specially trained to perform
the procedure so far.
"The group is currently
colleding more data and
gaining further experience,"
David said. "Hopefully. as
more physicians are being
trained, the procedure will be
available everywhere in about
a year." .
For further information on
cosmetic laser procedures, call
the ISCLS' roll-free consumer
hotline: i ·800-LASER45.

Haydee ·n11otson means bu~lnass In bid for supervisor seat
~Candidate says that her strong
business background, not
political experience, is what
makes her qualified for job.
Editor's nott: 1"bls ls tht one in a peri·
odic scrits of artlclts on csndidllfts for
the county supenlsorial stat now held by
Harriett Wieder.
By Jerry Clausen, Stan Wnter
COSTA MESA • Hoydee Velazques
Tillotson'l> n3me doesn't ring bi;lls in
many voters' minds, but community busi·
ness people recognize it immediately.
Business is her business.. Tillotson says,
and that's why she will seek the 0T3nge
County Board of Supervisor seat that
Harrie11 Wieder says she'll abandon.
"There's a need; for greater business
representation at all leveJs of govern-
ment,"' Tillotson contends. "Di:cisions af-
fectina business are made by others w~o
have no idea of what it means to be in
business."
Tillotson recently resigned as Wiedcr's
appointee to the county PlaMing Com-
mission, a job she held for just a few
weeks before quitting to gear up for the
November 1994 supervisoriul election.
She is fervent in denying that she i)
Wicder's hand-picl.;ed replacement to the
four-year Second Di 'trict sea t, which en-
compas es most of Costa Mesa and all of
Huntington Beach.
"Harrie tt ~upports my candidacy," she
explains. "She did not choose me 10 run
for the job. When people approached me,
I made my own decision."
Tillotson, proprietor of Tillotson Enter-
prises, manages commercial and residen-
tial properties and also does "some real·
estate development" from her north Hun-
tington Dench office.
Candidates who seek supervis0rial seal)
seldom arc successful unless th ey have
held other elected offices, such as city
council posts, Tillotson admits. But she i~
confident that her background in business
and civic organizations as v.cll ns her busi·
nc acumen will be enough to win elec-
tion.
"My chances are good," she empha-
si£e) ... I've been in the community for 24
years, :ind I have been involved." '
That imolvement include-, the short
stint on the county Planning Commission;
t\\O >en rs on the county's Commbsion on
the Statu' of Women; and serving a)
chairperson for the .Huntington· Dcuch
Chumber of Commerce, the Huntington
Harbour Republican Women Federut ed
and the Huntington Harbour Philhor-

A big issue in nny political race, she
says, is money. How much will be necuc<l
to \\in·? "It's bee n suggested that it will
· 1ai...c SS00,000," she says. She recently
held a smnll fund-rai ser but doesn't want
10 say how m uch was ruised.
"Remember," she admonished, "J have
not officially declared or announced. But,
yes, 1 will run."
