·Lifeguards' ·hands· lull ·with crowd, Navy debris
By lortAnn Basheda, Stall Writer
NEWPORT BEACH -A· sur·
'prised group of lifeguards had
their hands full Monday when
even more people flocked to ·the
coast than did the Fourth of July
- and some unusual debris wash·
ing ashore.
Crowds were estimated at about
125,000 people -compared to
about 110,000 Sunday.
The sheer number of beachgo-
ers, combined with a fairly rough
2· to 4-foot surf mo re than dou-
· bled the number of rescues.
-By. 4 p.m. Monday, lifeguard
Robert Will iams recprded rnore
than 100 rescues, compared to less
th1ln SO Sunday. •
Lifeguards were also forced to
call in the Newport Beach Fire
Department's hazardous materials
team when several empty U.S.
Navy mortars and a dtum full o(
hydrolic fluid washing ashore.
"We've never seen that happen
before," Williams said . .,..
By early evening, U.S. Coast
Guard officials had received more
than 20 calls about objects washing
ashore along the coast, but could
not figure out where they were
coming from.

0 ne of the more vivid memories of my
childhood is or watching team of horses
pulling nets full of fish on to the beach
in front of the 14th Street grammar school.
l think I was 10 years old ... it was 1922 ... I
was in the fourth grade. I'm
really not sure or either my
age. the year or the grade.
Following my railway-worker
father from one grubby little
railroad town to.another during:
my early childhood, I went to a
lot of grammar schools. Most
or that time is just a blur, but I
remember that year. I think it
wa the horses.
It was great fun.
The
Verdict
, lnvaJiably, school let out and
we all dashed down to the
beach. Some of u Balboa kids
tried to catch those slippery
-----li ttle fish with our bare hands. When we did, the Newport kids invariably threw
jelly fish at us Balboa kids. Thus, the most acute
memory is of being plastered with jelly fi h -
somethin$ one doesn't forget no matter how
long ago 1t happened.
And now, after all these year , I have finally
found out what that experience was really all .
about. What 1 thought was something put on
JU t for the enjoyment of a bunch of kids turns
out to have been part of a well-organized
commercial-fishing enterprise.
The source of this somewhat belated
re..-elation? Marco Anich. Who else?
Marco i my oldest friend. Born in Newport
many moons ago -
the son of Pete
T he fishermen in
the dory dragged
the net through
the breakers and
surrounded the
school of fish ,
then a team of
horses pulled the ·
net with all the
fish to the shore.
Amch, a commercial
fi hennan -Marco
grew up in Newport
at about the same
tune I was growing
up in Balboa. Our
lives meshed in
Balboa during our
teens and we have
remained close
friends ince that
time. All of our
mutual friends from
th e days eem to
have dropped by the
wayside.
l,t eems that the fish I saw being hauled onto
the beach were jack smelt. During the jack smelt
season (and, as far a l am concerned, the jelly
fish eason) the local fisherman kept a man
tationed at the end of the Newport pier. His
job was to spot sc hools of the pesky little
critters. These fi h travel in lartte schools which
appear a dark underwater clouds just out ide
the breaker line.

Revelers celebrate independence; police celebrate p·eaceful holiday

NEWPORT BEACH -A 'final tally

Roughly 80 or the arrest were made on the

paper the proposed costs of the open space on
the t,.,.o back bay land parcels and the proposal
tor an assessment for Newport Beach residents of
S 120 a year over a 30-year period.
In iny opinion, it's not only Newport Beach
that 1s going to benefit from this open space but
all of us here in this community: Costa Mesa,
Huntington Be.ach, particularly Costa Mesa. I was
y,ondering if there would be any proposal 10
po)sibly spread the assessment out to lower it on
a per annual basis over a wider area.
Even if it's a voluntary solicitation 1 think you
would be surprised how many people would be
willing to have an annual assessment to keep this
magnificent back bay property undeveloped.

The topic rs the Pilot's future. Retain your fine
personal and the great features. But please
change, or just get rid of, editors Bill Lobdell and
Steve Marble, however bright and decent they
are. They write much about Costa Mesa's politics,
but !>land for little except the status quo.
Lacking reliable, relevant, conservative
convictions, the "L & M Machine" will not and
cannot get to the root cause of our growing social
and density conditions.
"It's the liberal council policies stupid," thus
the Pilot should be highlighting wasteful programs
and advocating reforms such as majority rule,
councilmatic districts and a tough campaign code.
Residents deserve a healthy, honest dialogue
rnther than a suppression df the real issues.
So. will the Pilot editors have the integrity to
print this message and to lead their five endorsed
council members in a sensible direction? If so,
the Pilot will then truly "reflect the commpnity."

The idea of purchasing and preserving the parceh
