Th e anique activities and places that fill our wa rniest season \ 'I'll never say dude. and I won't wear my hat backwards I -Ron Roinanolld <rteM. at The Wedge) It's where the · mind and body m.eet Mo!.! bodysurfers have to work their way up to the Wedge. It's a perilous place that has broken the necks of even some of the most experienced surfers. Dut for veteran Wedge rider Ron Romanoski, it was the first place he'd ever surfed. The son of a Manne Corps master gunnery sergeant, Romanoski moved to the Newport Beach area in the early 1960s ·after three years in Japan. He'd never surfed in his life .. "A friend of mine said one day, 'Let's go • ro the Wedge.' And I said, 'What's the Wedge?' So from SJnta Ana Height~ he took me all the way down to the Peninsula and I thought, 'God, this i'> a long " ay to go 1us1 to get \\Ct,'" Romanos~i Sa)S. was. My initiation to surfing was lhe Wedge." Though, initially he was mostly thrown into the sand at an extremely high rate of speed. Romanoski eventually learned how to body surf. He moved on to be lly board and eventually to the esoteric sport of knee boarding. "All of a sudden l found a niche. I could go faster; l could go longer -the belly boar-O·was suited to the Wedge." Belly boards were shorter and wider than surfboards, with one or two fin'>. • They are no longer manufaclured and Romanoski says the new foam body borirds require little skill. "I'd spent three years in J apan going to high 'chool. Surfing was just something I'd heard about -I didn't really know what it Although Wedge regulars have little respect for un~killed body boarders, they con'>ider Romanoski 011c of top !-urfcrs in the world. Romanosl<; doesn't give his age. "Age i irrelevant if 1uu can do ''hat you want 10 do," he sa1s. Ron Romanoski pre pares for an afternoon in the surf. < Created irf the 1930s, it was called 'The Hook' The,.Wedge was created in the 1930s when the federal Wori...s Progress Admin· btr:irion built the Je lly out from the tip of the Balboa Peninsula to calm the waters in the entrance 10 Ne,,port Harbor. Firsl known as 'The Hook,' the first bod}surfers at the Wedge were former Navy frogmen who, at the close of Wo rld War II , used surplus swim fins to brave the crushing "U\CS. The biggest surf at the Wedge is gencr· ated by storms in the South~rn Hemi· i.phere. The swells double in site once they hit the Wedge, which gets i1s name from the way the jetty !.ends surf back into oncoming waves. creating a triangle· haped wall of water. 1 he face of the steep wave~ has been known to reach more than 30 feet, according to local bodysurfcr Mel Thoman. And the power Rom anoski marks the end of another enjoyable day at a legendary surfing spot. Wedge regular say a storm brewing in the Southern Hemisphere could gcnernte big surf by Frid.iy." · " of the surf makes the speed of the ride incredibly fast.
