For Ferris wheel rider, Ille moves In circles
• ~For the second time, Jeff Block
breaks world record for longest ride.
By Mamie Mcleod. swr Writer
COSTA MESA -h gets better the second
time around, so the saying goes.
But after 100,000 revolutions over a period
of 4,560 minutes, it's no wonder Jeff Block was
anxious to give up his scat on lhe Ferris wheel.
For the second time in his life, the 36·yeur-old
man from Tustin broke the world record for
the longest Ferris wheel ride Sunday on the
final day of the Orange County Fair.
The first time Dlock shared the title with
Rena (Clark) Oovies In 1978 -he was 21, she
was 17. Appropriately, Davies wDS there to ride
with Block durina his final five minutes of the
ride.
"I thought no one in the world would try to
do this ;:igain." said Davies, 32, who flew from
her home in San Francisco for the event. "But
if anyone was going to do it, it would be Jeff''
The hot and tired feeling may be the same,
but the money did get better. Block was
awnrded $3,800 for his Guinness world
breaki1;1g record; in 1978, he won SSOO. He was
also offered endorsement opp0rtunitics by
many unnamed businesses, but Dlock refused
them all.
"The first time I was unemployed and l
answered a want·od," said Block, a custodian
for Fullerton College who will return to work
next Monday. "The second time, J was asked
co do it. I'm not in it for the money; l'm in it
ror fun and a good time."
With a golden suntan on his smiling race,
Dlock wos anxious to leave the fair grounds
and return home wilh hi) girlfriend, Doreen
Vun Lith, whom he mun:igcd to sec about once
every day that the fair was going on -she sold
tickets at the other end of the fair.
"I said 'No, don't do it,'" said Van Lith, 39.
"He's not 21 anymore and he has a bad back.
Dut 1 guess he put me in my place."

place for the longest he can
remember. He also was \!Otcd the
fair-goers' favorite couch potato.
"There were ti mes when J
couldn't find a comfortable
position 10 sit in," said Harris, 41,
who won $1 ,500 and a two-year
membership at Family Fitness
Center in Cos ta Mesa.
. Fellow couch potato Michael T.
Schowengerdt, 29, of Costa Mesa
"I'm inore restless than he is;"
Schowengerdt said.
Some of the largest crowds,
however, hove red around a new
mother pig, Chelsea, who bore 11
piglets Sunday morning at 8:45
a.m.
The sow offered the fair's
second birth of piglets -nine pigs
were born by another pig July 8, a
day before the fair opened.

T his is a story about grnss

lt's about 20 women who
have formed an auxiliary group to
support Share Our Selves food
services for the needy in Costa
Mesa. A group of dedicated
women, led by Kathy Thompson,
who e goal is to bring funds and •
food to SOS without spending a
cent on fancy catering and e~otic
centerpieces.
Actually, it's about a group thnt
m:ide and served dinner to its
members nnd guests. Even the
dCS)Crt \\as donated, by the
Balboa Dessert Company.
, The auxilliary is called the
''A·Jeam." And, they certainly do
deserve an ''A" for their effort
and for the.ir purpose.
"This is a series or modest
fund·raisers "e'll be doing," said
group pre~ident Thomp~on. "Oy
doing all the ~ork ourselves, and
charging SJO per person, \\C are
able to give approximately S 1,200
to SOS."
The money goes a long w:iy to
feed the hungry.
Attending the dinner, held in
the grand Village Crean dining
hall, El oise and Bill Cor\'\'in,

used or killin& his supervisor and
ounding several co-workers in a
991 shooting rampaae arc cx-
ctcd to begin tod:ay.
On the morning or the rampage,
ichacl Rahming allegedly walked
nto the break room at the Harbor
ulcvard facility and asked his
oss, supervisor James Pichon, if
nd she stops dragging one foot .
he could ao home sick.
Pichon said yes. but moments
later, accordina 10 reports, Rah-
min& returned, raised a revolver
and started firing. t
Pichon was shot in the ilcad, but
managed to stagger away from the
range of fire and survive. Rahming
then chased Supervisor Allen
Motis, reportedly shooting the 53-
year-old to death in the hallway.
Next Rahming burst through an
administrative office and allegedly
started farina shots at Failview's
Executive Director Hugh Kohler,
who survived a wound.
Rahming surrendered peacefully
at his Long Beach home about an
hour after the rampage.
Rahming's auorney, Michael
Naughton, contends his client suf-
fers from a-paranoid perM>nality
disorder.
According to published psychiat-
ric reports, a p~ychiatrist who eval-
uated Rahming for Fairview of-
traveling in heavy traffic -particularly when a
man pulls up to stop beside her, nashing an
otherwise harmless glance her way.
She has work enough tryin~ to open a jnr.
Hold a fork. Brush her teeth. '1 feel hclple)s,"
she said. "It's total frustrntion."
"They're not even t3lking about my hand
·et," she said, her voice quivering. "I still can't
SC it."
"I call them 'daymnres,"' she said, joking
that the Oashbacks happen mO)t often during
her waking hours. "J still have a h~ird time
sleeping at night."
Salot ventured onto the road alone for the
first time Thursday.
The energy expended leads to exhau)tion.
Salot said she doesn't feel up 10 attending
any of the Hil bun court henrings .at this point,
unless called as a witness.
Court-appointed ps~chologbts are currently
evaluating Hilbun to determine "'hether he is
competent to stand trial.
But she is recovering surprisingly well, the
actors tell her.
"And I'm getting in touch with the anger,"
he said. "I'm finally realizing this guy violated
e. That it happened to me."
The triggers thnt make the ro3d to recovery
umpy arc such seemingly innocuous tasks as
ailing out insurance forms for her injuries or
"I was having a hard time," she said. "It was
really bizarre."
And Salot, who O\ ns a Costa Mesa aviation
accessory business -Plane Talk -with her
husband, Monte, still has not been back to
work. "I go to my office and just look at it,"
she said, laughing.
The 39-year-old manic depressive 1s charged
with stabbing his Corona dcl Mar mother and

Psychological scars can linger for victims of breast cancer
Women treated for breast cancer
who are deeply troubled by the disease
in the month following their diagnosis
are more likely to experience persistent
and often severe difficulties with
sexuality and with their psychological
and physical adjustment to cancer in
the year following treatment, new
studies frorp UCLA's Jonsson •
Comprehensive Cancer Center show.
In one o( the most extensive
investigations done to date OI\ the
quality of life of breast cancer survivors,
UCLA resear<;hers found that (or many
breast cancer patients, the psychosocial
problems they of ten experience
diminish over time. But for some, those
problems linger. In a study of 22 7
women with breast cancer, the
researchers were able to predict which
patients would most likely be troubled
1n the year following diagnosis, using a
questionnaire, devi5cd by UCLA
researchers, called the Cancer

"We'd like to think that once the

They're not," said C. Anne Coscarellt

"Even in women with cur<Jble
cancers, the impact lingers," Schag said.
''In fact. there are difficulties, and they
