COSTA MESA -While nuthorities ha"c
yet to confirm names, they are now calling the
mysterious deaths of a Costa Mesa woman and
her teen-age son a murder-suicide.
Coroner officials said they hoped to obtain
denial records today that would establish the
identities of the mother and son who were
found Wednesday in the master bedroom of a ,
town home in the 2200 block of Canyon Drive.
A source, however, identified the two as Jen·
nifer Holland, 32, and her son Alex, 13.
Police said they arc urijurc when the deaths
took place, but upon entering the master bed· •
room ,they discovered plastic i.cals nround 1he

been turned on and a note. It stated that the
\\Oman intended to commit suicide and took
responsibility for the death o f her son. Police
would not say what, if any, reasons were gi"en
for the suicide in the note.
"The female's cause of death was listed as
asphyxiation; for the juvenile, there is no of-
ficia l classification of the c::iu:,e of death, pend·
ing the results of a toxic screening," said Sgt.
Mike Millington of the Costa Mesa Police De-
partment.
Millington said the mother nnd ~on "ere last

her to miss work "11hout calling," M1ll1ngton
said. Police record:, al<.o show that at 9:41 a.m.
Wednesday a missing persons report was filed
from 2900 Bristol Street -the address of her

Neighbors say they are still stunned by the

part of a different set of personal goals.

NEWPORT BEACH -Like Cather, lile
son. Li1tle Ju~lin Deffenbnugh has no fe:ir in
the water.
Jeff Deffenbaugh, who began surfing profes-
sionally about the same time his on was born
on Jan. 10, 1992, never expected to become o
father so quickly.
Out, like a blessing in di guise, the addition:il
respon:i.ibilities h:l\e given Deffenbaugh a more
emph:uic guideline in and out of the water.
When there's another mouth to feed, you
paddle out a little ~arder -ond seek more dif-'
ficull moncuvers. You're no longer surfing for
your~elf.
"l'm really )Oung to be a dad, but it gives
me more direction as far as what l'nt going to
do," said Deffenbaugh, a Newport Beach resi-
dent '"ho continued his \'OCational assault on
Ju ly 17, by \\-inning the Dillabong West Coast
Pro-Am at the Huntington
Beach Pier.
Dcff enbaugh
Deffenbaugh, 20, stays
along the California coast.
He doesn't surf the As;
sociation of Surfing Profe~

although Deffenbaugh, cur-
rently lop-rated in the 1993
West Coast Pro-Am, has
ste:idily gained momentum
this year, hi~ priorities
need 10 be al home.
Even his l'\\o major ~ponsors -Body Glove
and Rusty -ha'e helped the cause. ·
"We got (Justin) a little wet suit, one that
Dody Glo"e gave me," Deffenbaugh said. ''ll's
a brigh1 )ellow ~ui1, so I can see him. During
1hc Op Pro, I brought him down to the beach
and put him in the \\ater, and he has no fear
at all. He') probably going to be a surfer.
When I go in the water, he'll be following me
in; he just IO\.CS ii, and I can't believe it.
"ll 's funny. He jumps in the pool and stuff

being scared. Suzie (Deffcnbaugh's gi rlfriend and Justin's mother) has
some friend~ with Jillie babies, and they don't do it. But Justin just
get~ in there and noats around.'' ·
Deffenbaugh has certainly been doing his share of "Ooaters" and
off-the-lip maneuvers. Maybe that's where Justin gets it.
Deffenbaugh, -... ho has been rated in the top 10 most of this year on
the Professional Surfing Association of America (PSAA)-sanc1ioned
I3ud Surf Tour, helped Team Rusty to the Katin Team Challenge
championship at the Huntington Beach Pie r in April, also a West
Con'>I Pro-Am event. Deffenbaugh also finished first individually.
"The PSAA is :i lot bigger, and there's a' lot more money in the

with Kronem:inn serving and
Minnesota leading, 3-1, he turned
to the bar above the terrace

Kronemann went on to hold

"You can't let those things get
to you," Kroneman n said
afterward. "1 know we 're in first

(two) matches to go, and maybe
that's what got to me tonight."
For Kronemann and the Dukes,

The difference between winning

They arc used imprtj'Crly.

ApparcntJy Mr. Hedges docs not
sec the efforts of Planned
Parenthood at the beach as a
reasonable response to the high
rare of unin1ended adolescenl
pregnancy in our county.
,Orange County in 1991, there
were 3,300 babies born to mothers
ages 10· l 7. Many of these babies
were born before lheir parents
made"idcquate financial
preparations. And they arc now or
will be on AFDC.
He also may not know that the
number of cases of sexually
transmitted diseases is al an'
all-rime high.
Research shows us 1hat m the
average high school senior class
close lO 75 percent of the student!>
have engaged in sexual
intercourse. Most of it
unprotected. Mostly because they
weren't aware of the consequence~
of sexual activity, what birth
control was, or how to use it or
obtain it.
What Planned Parenlbood is
trying to do tJ face these facts and
offer cducataon as a deterrent to
even having sex or at least having
unprotected sex, and bringing in to
the world unplanned babies, o r
acquiring daseases that could kill.
Young people concrcgate at the
· beach in the summer, so why not
have the voice of reality and
reason there also. The pier
educators arc directed to talk only
to those who are 14 years or older.
Younger children must bring their
parents. And lhe infonnation has
been valuable to parents also and
other adults be ides the youth that
come lo the table.
The peer educators answer
questions when possible and allow
people to take pamphlets. The
coalition for children, adolesunts
and parcnt!'I, of wberc J am on the
staff, whole-t\eartedly supports the
work of peer educaiors of Planned
Parcn1hood. They arc well-trained
and provide a vital service 10 !heir
peers.
Contrary to Mr. Hedges
opinion, research shows thal
better education leads to less

pregnancies. The beach 1s an
appropriate place becau<;e young
people need easy access 10
accura1c information. The
counselors arc trained and
knowledgeable.
'flle main point though is 1ha1
no one is forcing any teen to taJct:
this information. But if they want
the information o r want 10 a \k
questions of a responsible,
knowledgeable pcr'iOn.
The resources arc accessible 10
them at the beach. John I ledges
should take a clo~r look at 1he
literature. Jt teaches our young
people how to protect 1hem .. elves
And in 1h1s day and age, 1hat can
save 1he1r hves.
\ So, I really believe that 11's
appropriate for them to be a1 1hc
