Costa Mesa's first cop on ·the beat.
By Russ Loar. Staff Wnter
C osta Mesa's first police
officer, 66-year-olJ Roger
Neth, says it wa~ an accident
that led to the beginning of his
37-year law enforcement career.
An automobile accident.
At age 23, newfy married ·and
fresh out of college, Neth was
looking for a job. It was 1950. Out
hitchhiking one day, a Newport
Beach police sergeant he knew gave
him a ride, but within minutes the
officer was called to the scene of a
major traffic accident. It was one of
the worst accidents on record for
the city, killing five children.
Because the police photographer
was off duty, Neth -nn amateur
photographer -was pressed into
service.
HThe next day I was down at the
station to see the results of my
work," Neth says. "The chief, who
knew I was looking for a job, asked
me, 'Why don't you join the police
force?' I'd never even thought of
such a thing -I wanted to be a
coach."
Newpon Beach Po lice Chief
Roland Hodgkinson had
remembered Neth from the young
man's days as a star tackle at
Newport Harbor High, a member
of the school's legendary football
ream of 1942. Neth decided to take
the job.
"Six days later I was out on
patrol, riding with a sergeant for
the first few days. Then they turned
me loose," Neth says. "They don't
